Gender Representation in Academic Publications of Tourette Syndrome Research: An Analysis of Authorship Trends.

Tourette syndrome, characterized by phonic and motor tics, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly affects the quality of life of people with the condition. With over 1500 articles published in the last decade alone, this study aims to analyze the gender trends in publications related to Tourette syndrome from 2013 to 2022, examining the number of female authors as first authors and predicting future changes in female participation. The aim of this study is to analyze the gender trends of the first author in publications related to "Tourette Syndrome" from PubMed-indexed publicatio

Quality ratings of reviews in overviews: a comparison of reviews with and without dual (co-)authorship.

BackgroundPrevious research shows that many authors of Cochrane overviews were also involved in some of the included systematic reviews (SRs). This type of dual (co-)authorship (DCA) may be a conflict of interest and a potential source of bias. Our objectives were to (1) additionally investigate DCA in non-Cochrane overviews; (2) investigate whether there is an association between DCA and quality assessments of SRs in Cochrane and non-Cochrane overviews.MethodsWe selected a sample of Cochrane (n = 20) and non-Cochrane (n = 78) overviews for analysis. We extracted data on the number of reviews …

Writing by proxy: Authentic authorship in the era of AI-powered communication of scientific knowledge.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping biomedical research as both a key analytical tool and an efficient copyeditor. Large language models and related algorithms can help investigators sift through the ever-expanding bodies of scientific literature, connect fragmented biological and clinical datasets, and uncover/recognize meaningful patterns buried within complex multidimensional data. Beyond the bench, these tools can improve and refine manuscript architecture and streamline the flow of information by honing the articulation of simple or complex scientific ideas and sharpening the clarit

Authorship and citation trends in dementia research: A path to equitable career development for scientists.

INTRODUCTION: Women are increasingly entering the dementia research workforce, but they frequently fail to attain senior leadership positions in academia. Discrepancies in academic research outputs were investigated to guide equity-focused policy recommendations. METHODS: Bibliometrics was conducted on 400,482 original research articles (2003-2022) followed by surveying the AD/ADRD research community, to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate discrepancies in publication and authorship trends. In addition, an unsupervised learning algorithm was developed to analyze underlying relationships…

The 100 Most-Cited Articles on Optic Neuritis: Trends of Subtypes, Authorship, and Time.

BACKGROUND: Optic neuritis (ON) is an optic nerve inflammation that may lead to different degrees of vision loss. In recent decades, ON research facilitated a better understanding of the disease and its subtypes. This bibliometric analysis aimed to detect the 100 most-cited medical articles related to ON in the last 50 years (1972-2021) and describe publication trends arising from the list. METHODS: The Scopus database was used to locate and screen the 100 most influential ON papers based on the number of citations per article. Each entry was reviewed for the first author (name, gender, insti

The Thought From the Machine: Neural Basis of Thoughts With a Coherent and Diminished Sense of Authorship.

Patients with schizophrenia who experience inserted thoughts report a diminished sense of thought authorship. Based on its elusive neural basis, this functional neuroimaging study used a novel setup to convince healthy participants that a technical device triggers thoughts in their stream of consciousness. Self-reports indicate that participants experienced their thoughts as self-generated when they believed the (fake) device was deactivated, and attributed their thoughts externally when they believed the device was activated-an experience usually only reported by patients diagnosed with schiz…

Three decades of collaboration in rheumatology: a comprehensive co-authorship network analysis (1994-2023).

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the evolution of collaborative research in rheumatology over 3 decades (1994-2023), utilizing co-authorship network analysis to uncover key contributors, structural trends, and global collaboration patterns. The analysis aimed to provide insights into the dynamics of research cooperation and the factors influencing its development. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 31,231 publications on rheumatology, indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, were analyzed. The co-authorship network was constructed using Python (Version 3.10.5) in the PyCharm en…

To conclude, this research study reveals a rising trend of females in lead authorship roles within the field of cardiac arrhythmia research. However, it remains evident that there is a significant gender gap, with male researchers still outnumbering their female counterparts.

Gender Disparity in Movement Disorders Research Authorship: Progress and Persistent Gaps Across a Decade.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing numbers of women practising neurosciences, gender disparities persist in academic authorship. Focused evaluation of authorship patterns within movement disorders remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in women authorship across movement disorders publications in high-impact neurology journals and movement disorders-specific journals across a decade. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of movement disorder-related articles published in 2014 and 2024 in 20 neurology journals with the highest impact factor and two flagship movement…

Gender difference in the authorship of top anesthesiology and pain journals: a protocol for retrospective bibliometric study.

INTRODUCTION: The number of women in medicine has increased, and female scientists play an important role in medical research. However, bias in research publication and funding persists, which may influence the representation of women in medical studies. This study aims to explore women's representation in the authorship of top-five high-impact anesthesiology and pain journals over the past ten years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. METHODS: This retrospective bibliometric study will be performed according to relevant reporting recommendations for observational studies. The …

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to report women's authorship in Value in Health in terms of articles submitted to and accepted for publication before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to evaluate its potential impact on women's research productivity. METHODS: The proportion of women corresponding and first authors among submitted and accepted articles were analyzed and compared between the 2 periods: before (2018-2019) and during the COVID pandemic (2020-2021). The proportion of women corresponding authors from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) was compared with the proportion from…

Neurointerventional publication metrics by rank, specialty and gender: The impact of academic age and mega-authorship.

BACKGROUND: Bibliometric measures are used to compare neurointerventional faculty trained in neurosurgery, radiology and neurology, but the … weighted bibliometrics are not comparable across neurointerventional faculty. Academic age and mega-authorship each independently distort them, and both must be accounted for before h-index or citation counts are used in career assessment.

Challenges in Academic Authorship and Citation Metrics: Navigating Inflation, Biases, and the Rise of Evidence Synthesis.

This paper examines the challenges in academic publishing related to authorship inflation, citation bias, and the overreliance on quantitative metrics to evaluate research impact. Authorship inflation, including "gift authorship," occurs when individuals with minimal contributions are listed as co-authors, often due to institutional or political norms, inflating academic profiles without reflecting actual input. The study also discusses how citation patterns differ across disciplines, with high-citation fields like biomedical sciences benefiting from larger, faster publications, while research…

Trends in Female First Authorship in Anatomical Science International: A 24-Year Analysis (2002-2025).

In recent years, the promotion of gender equity and diversity in academic research has attracted increasing international attention. However, studies examining gender differences in authorship within the anatomical sciences remain limited. This study analyzed regional differences and temporal trends in the gender distribution of first authors in articles published in Anatomical Science International, the official English-language journal of the Japanese Association of Anatomists. All articles published between 2002 and 2025 were retrieved from PubMed, and the gender, country of affiliation, an…
