Two studies compared treatment of exhibitionists aimed at either: (1) modifying deviant sexual preferences; or (2) changing cognitions, enhancing relationship and interpersonal skills, and improving awareness of relapse prevention issues. Recidivism rates of these two programs were compared with each other and with the rates observed in untreated offenders. Results supported the focus on broader cognitive and social issues. Clearly exhibitionists can be treated effectively.

We studied 24 healthy young male smokers to ascertain the medical safety of a highly effective smoking-abatement technique called rapid smoking. Of 120 pathological gamblers randomly allocated to imaginal desensitisation (ID) or to other behavioural procedures (60 to each group, all procedures administered over one week) 63 subjects were contacted two to nine years later. The chronic hair pulling of a 36-year-old woman with moderate mental retardation was initially treated with a simplified habit-reversal (SHR) procedure that consisted of awareness training, competing response training, and social support. When SHR did not produce large and sustained reductions in hair pulling, an awareness enhancement device was added, and it reduced hair pulling to near-zero levels in two settings. The results are discussed, and directions for future research with this device are provided.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring and reduction of aversive tension is a core issue in dialectical behaviour therapy of patients. The sensitivity of an alcoholic's sensory systems (SS) to alcohol therapy is a good indication of treatment efficacy in this disease. In this study, we compare pharmacotherapy (PHT) and acupuncture therapy (AP) on the sensitivity of visual (VL), acoustic (AC), olfactory (OL) and taste (TS) systems to alcohol irritants (AI).
