Bacteriology of diabetic foot lesions.

Clinical grading and bacteriological study of 107 patients with diabetic foot lesions revealed polymicrobial aetiology in 69 (64.4%) and single aetiology in 21 (19.6%). Among 107 patients 62 had ulcer. Of these 31 had mixed aerobes. Twenty six patients with cellulitis and 12 with gangrene had more than 5 types of aerobes and anaerobes such as E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Proteus spp., Enterobactor spp., Enterococci spp., Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides spp., Prevotella spp. and Peptostreptococcus spp. It was noted that 50 out of 62 patients with ulcer, and all the patients

[The Constantinople Imperial Bacteriology Institute].

The Constantinople Imperial Bacteriology Institute (CIBI) allowed the development of a common medical effort between France and Turkey at a time when the main European powers were competing to have an influence on the Ottoman Empire. In 1887, Turkey sent Zoreos Pacha, a medical doctor, to Paris to learn anti-rabies immunization techniques, and he started a rabies control institute after his coming back. In 1893, a cholera epidemic in Constantinople was vanquished by A. Chantemesse, sent by Pasteur, and France was allowed to start another microbiologic Institute. The first director of this Cons…

Quantitative bacteriology in adenoid tissue.

Over the past several years the indications for adenoidectomy have become increasingly controversial. Attempts to justify the operation in recurrent otitis media by correlating cultures of the nasopharynx with cultures of middle ear fluid have been inconclusive. Using quantitative bacteriologic techniques, we have studied the levels of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria per gram of tissue in adenoids removed from 48 patients. In seven patients, adenoidectomy was performed for nasal obstruction alone, in 17 patients for chronic serous otitis media, and in 24 patients for recurrent suppurative and s

Bacteriology of symptomatic adenoids in children.

BACKGROUND: Children with adenoid hypertrophy have been shown to harbor pathogenic bacteria in the nasopharynx despite antibiotics. Removal of the adenoid is associated with a reduction in the bacterial count. AIMS: The study was done to determine the bacteriology of the adenoid tissue in chronic adenotonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy, and determine the antibiotic sensitivity of potential pathogens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a descriptive study conducted on 100 patients aged between three and twelve years who underwent adenotonsillectomy/adenoidectomy. After adenoidectomy, the specime…

Bacteriology of chronic suppurative otitis media.

Aspiration of exudate through an open perforation was performed in 183 patients with chronic otitis media. The pus was cultured aerobically and anaerobically. Aerobes only were isolated from 71 patients (39%); 20 patients (11%) had only anaerobes; and 91 patients (50%) had both aerobes and anaerobes. Only 1 specimen had no growth. There were 259 aerobic isolates. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was recovered from 68 patients. Other aerobes commonly recovered included Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. There were 178 anaerobic isolates. Only anaerobic gram-positive cocci were isolated in 2

[Bacteriology of neonatal septicemia in Dakar].

Between February 1983 and February 1991, 471 blood cultures from newborns with neonatal infection, aged from 0 to 30 days, admitted to the Pediatric Hospital Albert Royer, Dakar, were performed. In 141 (30.3 percent) cases, one bacterium was isolated. Three major causative organisms were identified: Klebsiella spp (28.6 percent), E. coli (19.5 percent) and S. aureus (17.4 percent). Altogether, we isolated 99 (69.2 percent) enterobacteria, 7 (4.8 percent) other Gram negative bacilli and 37 (25.8 percent) Gram positive cocci among which 25 S. aureus, 10 streptococci (7 group B, 2 group D, 1 grou

The bacteriology of acute maxillary sinusitis.

Sinus secretions obtained by antral aspiration from 347 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were examined bacteriologically. Special attention was paid to the method by which anaerobic bacteria could be recovered. On the total, 485 sinus secretion samples were examined, of these 336 were aspirates, 149 yields of injection-aspirations. Aerobic bacteria were cultured from 263 aspirates and from 100 injection-aspiration samples. Only anaerobes were recovered from 6 sinuses. Bacterial culture was negative in 115 sinuses (24%). The most common pathogens isolated were Haemophilus influenzae (50.

Pelvic inflammatory disease: bacteriology and sequelae.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is defined as the acute clinical syndrome associated with ascending spread of micro-organisms from the lower to the upper female genital tract. The causative organisms can be divided into exogenous (mostly sexually transmittable) and endogenous agents. During the past three decades' epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), STD agents have accounted for 60-80% of PIDs in women below the age of 25. After PID a total of 17.4% of the women become infertile because of post-PID tubal damage. Multiple infections, increasing age at the first infection, and se

Some current concepts in intestinal bacteriology.

Quantitative studies of the fecal flora of populations at different risk of colon cancer indicate that the relative proportions of some particular species of bacteria rather than of different genera of bacteria may be correlated with colon cancer incidence. Since the metabolic activity of different species in each genus varies widely, a shift in proportions of species could cause a major change in total metabolic activity in the individual. In samples taken from various areas of the intestinal tract and in scrapings from the intestinal wall, the composition of the flora remained relatively con
