Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection increases presence of the Ruminococcus torques group in the gut and alters the microbial proteome.

We explored the impact of chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection on the gut microbiome and microbial activity in a longitudinal study. At baseline (time-point T0), 42 fecal samples from matched individuals (21 positive for strongyloidiasis and 21 negative) were subjected to microbiome 16S-rRNA sequencing. Those positive at T0 (untreated then because of COVID19 lockdowns) were retested one year later (T1). Persistent infection in these individuals indicated chronic strongyloidiasis: they were treated with ivermectin and retested four months later (T2). Fecal samples at T1 and T2 were subje

The Role of Prevotella Species in Female Genital Tract Infections.

Female genital tract infections (FGTIs) include vaginal infections (e.g., bacterial vaginosis [BV]), endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease [PID], and chorioamnionitis [amniotic fluid infection]. They commonly occur in women of reproductive age and are strongly associated with multiple adverse health outcomes including increased risk of HIV/sexually transmitted infection acquisition and transmission, infertility, and adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth. These FGTIs are characterized by a disruption of the cervicovaginal microbiota which largely affects host immunity through the los

Porphyromonas gingivalis: a potential trigger of neurodegenerative disease.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a gram-negative bacterium and the main causative agent of periodontitis, a disease closely associated with the development of periodontal disease. The progression of periodontitis, a chronic infectious disease, is intricately linked to the inflammatory immune response. Inflammatory cytokines act on periodontal tissues via immunomodulation, resulting in the destruction of the periodontal tissue. Recent studies have established connections between periodontitis and various systemic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, tumors, and neurodegenerat

Inherently and Conditionally Essential Protein Catabolism Genes of Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Proteases are critical virulence determinants of Porphyromonas gingivalis, an emerging Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and arthritis pathogen and established agent of periodontitis. Transposon sequencing has been employed to define the core essential genome of this bacterium and genes conditionally essential in multiple environments - abscess formation; epithelial colonization; and cigarette smoke toxin exposure; as well as to elucidate genes required for iron acquisition and a functional type 9 secretion system. Validated and predicted protein catabolism genes identified include a combination of

Porphyromonas gingivalis and rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the pathogenic association between periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis focusing on the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis. RECENT FINDINGS: In the last decades our knowledge about the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis substantially changed. Several evidences demonstrated that the initial production of autoantibodies is not localized in the joint, rather in other immunological-active sites. A central role seems to be played by periodontal disease, in particular because of the ability of P. gingivalis to induce citrullination, the posttranslational modifi

The association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis.

The relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and poor oral health has been recognised for many decades. The association between periodontal infection and the risk of developing RA has been the subject of epidemiological, clinical and basic science research in recent times. Converging and reproducible evidence now makes a clear case for the role of specific periodontal infective pathogens in initiating, amplifying and perpetuating rheumatoid arthritis. The unique enzymatic properties of the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis and its contribution to the burden of citrullinated peptid

EBV-Tonsillitis with superinfection involving Staphylococcus aureus and Prevotella Oris leading to life-threatening bleeding in a 13-year-old girl: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Viral infections of the upper airways are common in children and adolescents, often presenting with mild symptoms and typically resolving without the need for hospitalization. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a gammaherpesvirus, can cause diverse clinical syndromes and transient immune dysregulation, potentially predisposing to bacterial superinfection. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 13-year-old girl with critical upper airway obstruction due to necrotizing ulcerative oropharyngitis in the context of an EBV infection, with superinfection by Prevotella oris and methicillin-sensitive Staph

Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndromes and the gut-oral-brain axis: a narrative review of emerging microbiome-immune interactions and therapeutic perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndromes (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) are characterized by sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms. Growing evidence indicates that gut and oral microbiota may contribute to disease pathogenesis through immune and inflammatory pathways. METHODS: This narrative review analyzed approximately 250 studies published between 2000 and 2024, retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The selected works included clinical, immunological, and microbiome-related studi

[Community- and hospital-acquired bacteremia: a retrospective study in a regional hospital. III. Microbiological aspects].

A retrospective study was made of all blood cultures performed over a 40-month period at the Ivrea-Castellamonte Hospital (Turin, Italy). A total of 4386 vials from 619 patients were examined. There were 619 positive vials (14.1%) from 131 patients (21.2%) corresponding to 145 bacteremia episodes, including 129 monomicrobial (89%) and 16 polymicrobial (11%). Ten patients (1.6%) had more than one episode. There were 73 polluted vials (1.7%). A total of 165 microorganism were isolated: Gram-positive (52.7%) and Gram-negative (46%) bacteria, and mycetes (1.2%), anaerobic flora (9.7%). The predomi

Periodontitis and myocardial hypertrophy.

There is a deep relationship between cardiovascular disease and periodontitis. It has been reported that myocardial hypertrophy may be affected by periodontitis in clinical settings. Although these clinical observations had some study limitations, they strongly suggest a direct association between severity of periodontitis and left ventricular hypertrophy. However, the detailed mechanisms between myocardial hypertrophy and periodontitis have not yet been elucidated. Recently, we demonstrated that periodontal bacteria infection is closely related to myocardial hypertrophy. In murine transverse

Vertebral osteomyelitis and epidural abscesses caused by Prevotella oralis: a case report.

An interesting case of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis with multiple epidural abscesses caused by non-pigmented Prevotella oralis is reported. The patient was a 68-year-old female who presented to the emergency room (ER) with severe pain and tenderness in her lower back with fever. She had recently undergone esophagogastroduodensoscopy (EGD) for complaints of esophageal reflux, which showed submucosal cyst in the esophagus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic spine revealed multiple spinal epidural abscesses with signal enhancement at the level of T6 and T7, suggestive of vertebr

Headache of a diagnosis: frontotemporal pain and inflammation associated with osteolysis.

A 62-year-old woman presented with left frontotemporal pain, scalp tenderness and raised levels of inflammatory markers. Temporal arteritis was considered likely, and symptoms resolved with prednisone therapy. This delayed diagnostic bone biopsy until a soft tissue abscess formed, and Pott's puffy tumour associated with Prevotella osteomyelitis of the frontal bone was diagnosed. This case highlights the value of early histopathological examination, and is a reminder of a condition seen frequently in the pre-antibiotic era.

Vaginal mesh infection due to Bacteroides melaninogenicus: a case report of another emerging foreign body related infection.

We present a case of a 29-y-old woman with rectocele, cystocele, and uterine prolapse who developed a vaginal infection after the placement of a macroporous polypropylene vaginal mesh. Bacteroides melaninogenicus was isolated from the area of the infection. The exposed parts of the mesh were removed and she received treatment with metronidazole and doxycycline. No recurrence of the infection was noted during 12 months of follow-up. However, the patient continued to avoid intercourse due to severe dyspareunia. Vaginal mesh-related infections represent an emerging type of infection that may comp

Prevotella bivia necrobacillosis following infectious mononucleosis.

A case of Lemierre's syndrome is reported. Although Fusobacterium species are commonly associated with this presentation, Prevotella bivia was the causative micro-organism identified in this case. The finding that disseminated anaerobic sepsis followed primary EBV infection led to the construction of a hypothetical model of infection.

Correlation between oral malodor and periodontal bacteria.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, are primarily responsible for oral malodor. Recently, the mgl gene encoding L-methionine-alpha-deamino-gamma-mercaptomethane-lyase, which produces methyl mercaptan, was cloned from Porphyromonas gingivalis. This article discusses the mechanism and pathogenic role of the formation of VSCs by oral bacteria.

Capnophilic and anaerobic bacteremia in neutropenic patients: an oral source.

The currently accepted empiric antibiotic therapy for bacterial infections in neutropenic patients may not cover the possibility of capnophilic and anaerobic bacteremia. Many of these infections develop in patients with severe mucositis or periodontitis, and the type of organisms recovered also suggests an oral source of infection. We present two cases of bacteremia in neutropenic patients who had been empirically treated with ceftazidime and piperacillin plus amikacin. In the first case a beta-lactamase-producing strain of Capnocytophaga ochracea was isolated; in the second case bacteremia wa

[Ludwig's angina].

Ludwig's angina is a rare infectious condition originating in the oropharyngeal region, most commonly from the teeth. The principal symptoms consist of cervical pain, dyspnea, dysphagia, symmetrical neck swelling and fever. Serious complications include respiratory collapses, mediastinitis, pleural empyema, pericarditis and pericardial tamponade, and may result in the death of the patient. The most useful investigations in patients with suspected Ludwig's angina are clinical assessment, a cervico-thoracic CT-scan to determine the extent of the lesions, microbiological examination and panoramic

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis: 8-years' experience of microbiology.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a life-threatening complication of pharyngeal or dental infections. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether dental or pharyngeal source result from different pathogen(s) in CNF and whether antibiotics, given before admission, influence the antimicrobial resistance of pathogens. In 152 CNF patients, Streptococcus milleri group and Prevotella species were the predominant isolates, frequently copathogens, mostly in dental CNF samples. Penicillin and clindamycin resistance were observed in 39% and 37% of cases, respectively, independently of any pre
