Bacteroides fragilis colonization induces protective systemic IgA.

BACKGROUND: Gut-educated IgA-secreting plasma cells that disseminate beyond the mucosa and into systemic tissues can help prevent disease in several contexts. Many species of bacteria have been described as efficient inducers of mucosal IgA, including the commensal bacteria Bacteroides fragilis (Bf); however, less is known about inducers of systemic IgA responses. RESULTS: Here, we show that the generation of bone marrow IgA plasma cells and high levels of serum IgA specific to Bf requires robust intestinal colonization. Bf-specific IgA responses were severely diminished in mice lacking Peyer…

Intravenous metronidazole therapy for Bacteroides fragilis meningitis.

A 69-year-old man developed meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis and Streptococcus MG-intermedius, which progressed during chloramphenicol and nafcillin therapy to the extent that he seemed near death, with frank pus covering the spinal cord at surgery. Treatment with intravenous metronidazole and penicillin G was curative. After multiple trauma, a 20-year-old man developed meningitis due to Escherichia coli and B fragilis. He failed to respond to chloramphenicol alone, but responded to combined treatment with chloramphenicol and metronidazole. The right frontal sinus and epidural space absc…

[Bacteroides infection in surgical patients (author's transl)].

More than 80 cases of bacteroides infections are reported. 54 cases of these infections were postoperative complications. Relationships between bacteroides infection and diseases of the colon are significant. Not very impressive local symptoms made the diagnoses of abscesses difficult. In most cases bacteroides are susceptible to chloramphenicol and tetracycline. Patients develop agglutinable antibodies after bacteroides infection.

Bloodstream infection caused by Bacteroides denticanum, a close relative of Bacteroides pyogenes, misidentified by MALDI TOF- mass spectrometry.

Bacteroides pyogenes can cause infections in humans. We describe a case of bloodstream infection caused by Bacteroides denticanum that probably originated from a dog bite. MALDI-TOF MS misidentified this new species as B. pyogenes. Subsequent analysis using the 16S rRNA sequencing approach identified the species as B. denticanum.

Sex and regional effects of Bacteroides in the gut.

UNLABELLED: Bacteroides spp. are a key immune-programming microbe in healthy individuals-these bacteria have been shown to be reduced in abundance across a variety of disease states. Our study investigated the systemic and region-specific responses to Bacteroides colonization in the gut, including sex-related differences, in mice. Utilizing C57BL/6 mice, we administered Bacteroides to conventional, antibiotic-treated mice, then assessed this microbe's influence on the gut microbiota composition and inflammatory responses following an airway lipopolysaccharide challenge to assess effects on the…

Is Bacteroides finegoldii a new bacterial pathogen?

Bacteoides finegoldii is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped and obligate anaerobic bacteria isolated in human feces during studies of intestinal microbiota. We present a case report in which B. finegoldii was isolated and identified from the blood culture of a 93-year-old patient with abdominal pain. Microbiological identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed later by 16S rRNA sequencing. An abdomino-pelvic CT scan was conducted, showing a mass of neoplastic appearance that infiltrated the sigmoid colon and bladder, probably producing a colo-vesical fistula. Up to now, this is the firs

Mechanisms of Bacteroides fragilis resistance to metronidazole.

Metronidazole-resistant Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) have been reported worldwide. Several mechanisms contribute to B. fragilis resistance to metronidazole. In some cases, the mechanisms of metronidazole resistance are unknown. Understanding the mechanisms of resistance is important for therapy, the design of new alternative drugs, and control of resistant strains. In this study, a comprehensive review of the B. fragilis resistance mechanisms to metronidazole was prepared. The rate of metronidazole-resistant B. fragilis has been reported as ranging from 0.5% to 7.8% in many surveys. Acco…

Bacteroides-associated pylephlebitis in a patient with strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is associated with Gram-negative bacteremia. Septic portal vein thrombosis or pylephlebitis is a rare but serious complication of intra-abdominal infection, and it is often associated with Bacteroides bacteremia. We present the first report of pylephlebitis with Bacteroides bacteremia associated with underlying Strongyloides stercoralis infection and briefly review the management of septic portal vein thrombosis.

Bacteroides acidifaciens drives a liver detox program.

Alcohol-associated liver disease is a leading cause of chronic liver conditions, yet there are limited effective therapies. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Shen et al. demonstrate that soluble dietary fiber enhances intestinal Bacteroides acidifaciens, which ameliorates alcohol-associated liver injury in mice by activating hepatic ornithine aminotransferase.

[Bacteroides fragilis meningitis revealing a meningorectal fistula].

UNLABELLED: Cases of meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis are rare; we report a case revealing a meningorectal fistula. CASE REPORT: A 2-month-old infant developed a severe sepsis syndrome following a rectosigmoidoscopy for rectal bleeding. Lumbar puncture diagnosed bacterial meningitis. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture evidenced B fragilis with betalactamase. The initial antibiotherapy was changed for imipenem-metronidazole, which is at present the recommended antibiotherapy. Malformation including pre-spinal tumor and meningorectal fistula was evoked on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) a…

Bacteroides gracilis, an important anaerobic bacterial pathogen.

Clinical isolates of agar-pitting, formate-fumarate-requiring, anaerobic gram-negative bacilli were recharacterized in consideration of the species descriptions of Bacteroides ureolyticus and the newly described B. gracilis, Campylobacter concisus, and Wolinella sp. During an 11-year period, 7.5% (101 of 1,341) of all specimens yielding anaerobes were found to contain an organism in this group. Of the 71 isolates that were available for study, 43 were B. ureolyticus, 23 were B. gracilis, and 5 were in the Wolinella-C. concisus group. The role in infection and patterns of antimicrobial suscepti…

Transferable plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance in Bacteroides.

Plasmid-mediated resistance to chloramphenicol (Chlr), erythromycin (Eryr), tetracycline (Tetr) and clindamycin (Clindr) was transferred from three clinical isolates of Bacteroides fragilis and one faecal isolate of B. thetaiotaomicron to strains of B. fragilis, B. distasonis and Escherichia coli, and subsequently to B. fragilis and E. coli second-and third-stage recipients in series. Successful transfer was achieved by membrane-filter and centrifugation techniques that provide stable cell-to-cell contact but not by simple mixed broth culture. Chlr Eryr Tetr and Clindr Eryr were transferred at…

Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron enhances H2S production in Bilophila wadsworthia.

Sulfate- and sulfite-reducing bacteria (SRB) are a group of strict anaerobes found within the human gut. Bilophila wadsworthia, a sulfite-reducing bacterium which produces hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from taurine and isethionate respiration, is a common member of the healthy commensal human gut microbiota but has been implicated in several disease states including inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, one of the most prominent gut bacteria, has sulfatases which release sulfate, serving as a potential substrate for sulfate-reducing bacteria. Here, we showed …

Bacteroides acidifaciens: Linking dietary fiber to liver health.

While innumerous associative microbiome studies have been published, mechanistic links between the microbiome and host physiology remain much scarcer. In Cell Host & Microbe, Shen et al. report the effect of soluble dietary fibers in alcohol-related liver disease. Through microbiome remodeling, dietary fiber triggers upregulation of liver ornithine aminotransferase and a subsequent reduction in hepatic damage.
