Although crown ether complexes of KCN do not expedite the reaction, sterically hindered amino acids are readily transesterified in the presence of saturating concentrations of KCN at elevated temperatures.

A 53-year-old African-American man with relapsed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma developed seizures and respiratory arrest 2 hours after an infusion of high-dose etoposide in preparation for an autologous bone marrow transplant. Laboratory tests revealed both rapid hemolysis and severe metabolic acidosis. The patient died the following day. This report presents the case of a patient whose inhalation exposure to benzyl alcohol led to clinical manifestations similar to toluene intoxication, including sudden altered mental status, metabolic acidosis, hypokalemia, hypophosphatemia, and hyperammonemia. Toxicity from benzyl alcohol inhalation is quite rare, and hyperammonemia associated with renal tubular dysfunction in poisoning cases has not been reported in the past.

Here, we present the case of a 54-year-old female presenting for outpatient ankle hardware removal who experienced severe total body pruritus along with a maculopapular rash persisting four days after the procedure. Highly electronically deactivated benzylic alcohols, including those with a CF3 group adjacent to the OH-bearing carbon, undergo dehydrative Friedel-Crafts reactions upon exposure to catalytic Brønsted acid in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) solvent.
