The opinions of 116 homicide bereavement caregivers of interventions recommended for survivors were solicited. Presenting problems, optimum treatment framework, and reasons for treatment failure were also surveyed. Respondents preferred methods associated with crisis intervention and grief counseling. BACKGROUND: The validity of excluding bereavement-related depressive episodes which satisfy all the criteria of major depression is examined in this community study.
METHOD: A total of 658 subjects were interviewed in their homes using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. The length of the episodes of depression, the dysfunction they caused, and the frequency of seeking and receiving treatment were assessed.
RESULTS: The risk of recurrence did not differ whether the depressive episodes that satisfy the DSM-III-R criteria of major depression were or were not related to bereavement.

Perinatal loss and grief have been recognized as a special form of loss in the last ten years. Perinatal death includes miscarriage, therapeutic abortion, stillbirth, and infant death shortly after birth. Acknowledgement of the death and support to mourn their loss by significant others promotes resolution of this bereavement. If perinatal bereavement is not resolved, one-quarter to one-third of mothers may go on to develop a clinical depression. A large number of babies are stillborn or die in the neonatal period in Britain every year. This is only a small percentage of births overall, but these babies represent a considerable loss to the parents, and their hopes and ideals both for themselves and for their child. One of the key aids to grieving is memory, and in those cases where babies are born dead or die in utero, a history of the baby needs to be created. Photography can help create this history, and bereaved parents and families have expressed the importance of photographic images in assisting with their grieving process.
