Risks of the consumption of beverages containing quinine.

Although the United States Food and Drug Administration banned its use for nocturnal leg cramps due to lack of safety and efficacy, quinine is widely available in beverages including tonic water and bitter lemon. Numerous anecdotal reports suggest that products containing quinine may produce neurological complications, including confusion, altered mental status, seizures, and coma, particularly in older women. Psychologists need to inquire about consumption of quinine-containing beverages as part of an evaluation process.

Role of alcoholic beverages in essential hypertensive patients.

To evaluate the importance of alcohol and other environmental factors in essential hypertensives, we conducted a cross-sectional study on 627 patients (322 women, 305 men) subdivided in four subgroups according to sex and presence or absence of drug therapy, to evaluate differences due to drugs and changes in life style. Multiple regression analyses were run where systolic and diastolic blood pressures were considered as separate dependent variables with the following independent variables: age, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol and coffee consumption, smoking, educational level; con

The role of caffeinated beverages in dental fluorosis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the incidence of dental fluorosis has increased during the past decade. Greater availability and use of fluoride-containing gels, mouth rinses, dentifrices, etc., improper prescribing of fluoride supplements and ingestion of fluoride dentifrice by some children are some of the suggested determinants of dental fluorosis. However, based on the increase in consumption of tea, coffee, and other caffeine-containing beverages by the children, and the augmentative effect of caffeine on fluoride bioavailability, we theorize that the rise in incidence of dental flu

Cola beverage and delayed elimination of methotrexate.

AIMS: To report a case of severe delayed methotrexate elimination attributable to consumption of a cola beverage. METHODS: To investigate unexplained low urinary pH in a lymphoma patient treated with high-dose methotrexate. RESULTS: Unexpected urinary acidity, despite administration of large amounts of sodium bicarbonate, could be attributed to repeated consumption of a cola beverage. It resulted in a delayed elimination of methotrexate and acute renal failure. Discontinuation of cola drinks, increase in calcium folinate rescue and in sodium bicarbonate allowed satisfactory elimination of me

Correlation of rosacea with hot beverage intake.

In this report, we correlated the incidence of rosacea with coffee (regular and decaffeinated) and tea consumption in a large cohort of middle-aged men and women living within the United Kingdom. Caffeinated coffee drinkers had lower odds for rosacea diagnosis compared to non-coffee drinkers. We hypothesize that the vasoconstrictive effects of caffeine in regular coffee overpower the vasodilatory effects associated with hot beverages and support it to be protective against rosacea.

Associations of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, Artificially Sweetened Beverages, and Pure Fruit Juice With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test the associations of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), artificially sweetened beverages (ASB), and pure fruit juice (PJ) consumption with the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: Data for 136 277 UK Biobank participants who completed the dietary questionnaire and did not have a history of liver disease were included. Logistic regression was used for the cross-sectional setting where NAFLD was defined by a fatty liver index (FLI) ≥60. Cox proportional hazard regression was used for the longitudinal setting where hospitalized NAFLD was defined as

New frontiers in beverage fortification: Delivery of functional ingredients via micro- and nanoencapsulation in dairy and non-dairy beverages.

The global beverage market is rapidly evolving toward functional products fortified with bioactive ingredients like probiotics, polyphenols, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. However, the inherent instability of these ingredients during processing, storage, and gastrointestinal transit compromises their efficacy and product viability. To address these challenges, micro- and nanoencapsulation have emerged as powerful technological solutions. This review provides a comprehensive and critical analysis of recent advances in micro- and nanoencapsulation strategies for fortifying dairy and non-dair

Spectroscopic Decoding of Ethanol-Water Clusters in Alcoholic Beverages.

Recent advances in spectroscopic techniques have provided molecular insights into the supramolecular structures of ethanol-water clusters (EWC) in alcoholic beverages. Sensory quality of these beverages is not only governed by trace flavor compounds but is fundamentally influenced by the dynamic, hydrogen-bonded networks formed between ethanol and water molecules. This review summarizes progress in elucidating the structural characteristics, stability, and transformation mechanisms of EWC across different alcoholic matrices, with a particular emphasis on contributions from multiscale spectrosc

Potentially addictive properties of sugar-sweetened beverages among adolescents.

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) increase risk of cardiometabolic disease. Young people consume the largest amounts of SSBs and have experienced the greatest relative gains in obesity in the past several decades. There is evidence of addictive properties of both caffeine and sugar, the primary ingredients in SSBs, but little research into such properties of SSBs in naturally occurring consumption patterns. Thus, in this exploratory study, we sought to examine potentially addictive properties of SSBs during a 3-day SSB cessation intervention in overweight and obese adolescents who typically con

Fructose-rich beverages and risk of gout in women.

CONTEXT: Fructose-rich beverages such as sugar-sweetened soda and orange juice can increase serum uric acid levels and, thus, the risk of gout, but prospective data on the relationship are limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between intake of fructose-rich beverages and fructose and the risk of incident gout among women. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In the Nurses' Health Study, a US prospective cohort study spanning 22 years (1984-2006), we analyzed data from 78,906 women with no history of gout at baseline who provided information on intake of beverages and fructose throug

Monitoring of laryngopharyngeal reflux: influence of meals and beverages.

Ambulatory 24-hour double-probe pH monitoring seems to be the best test to measure reflux. Artifacts caused by intake of acid foods and beverages have to be excluded, necessitating a time-consuming manual review of the 24-hour data. Dietary restrictions used to bypass these artifacts would interfere with the normal daily life situation. Therefore, the influence of food and beverages ingested during the monitoring period was studied. Data from 252 patients who underwent double-probe pH monitoring were analyzed, first by visual inspection of the 24-hour tracing and second by leaving out the inta

Relation of female infertility to consumption of caffeinated beverages.

Several studies have reported an association between caffeine intake and delay to conception. To study this relation further, the authors examined caffeine use in 1,050 women with primary infertility and 3,833 women who had recently given birth during the period 1981-1983 in the United States and Canada. The cases were separated by the cause of their infertility: ovulatory factor, tubal disease, cervical factor, endometriosis, or idiopathic infertility. The relative risks of each type of infertility associated with caffeine were calculated using separate logistic regression models and controll

Dislodgement of impacted oesophageal foreign bodies with carbonated beverages.

Carbonated beverages release sufficient carbon dioxide when ingested, to distend the oesophagus, relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and to force the passage of impacted meat and other foreign bodies into the stomach. Of 28 patients with foreign bodies in the oesophagus, eight had them dislodged after ingestion of barium sulphate suspension, whereas carbonated soda water was used successfully in 16 out of 20 patients with a normal oesophagus or with oesophageal motility disorders and organic strictures. Carbonated beverages may be used as the first-line treatment of acute episodes of oesopha
