Quantum cognition and projection bias.

The innovative application of quantum mechanical concepts of probability to cognitive science has provided new, meaningful ways to more accurately model human decision making. Leveraging the dynamic geometric principles associated with the mathematics of quantum theory, we use the idea of probability interference to explain projection bias and its violations of the classical law of total probability and expected utility theory. In particular, Khrennikov's contextual probability model is successfully applied to the study by Read & van Leeuwen on hunger and projection bias. We conclude that prob…

Radial bias in face identification.

Human vision in the periphery is most accurate for stimuli that point towards the fovea. This so-called radial bias has been linked with the organization and spatial selectivity of neurons at the lowest levels of the visual system, from retinal ganglion cells onwards. Despite evidence that the human visual system is radially biased, it is not yet known whether this bias persists at higher levels of processing, or whether high-level representations are invariant to this low-level orientation bias. We used the case of face identity recognition to address this question. The specialized high-level…

Hostile interpretation bias in depression.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests an important relationship between interpretation bias, hostility and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Extant literature has yet to examine hostile interpretation bias in clinically depressed samples; the current studies sought to fill this gap. METHOD: Study 1 participants included undergraduates who met criteria for MDD (n=36) or no anxiety or mood diagnosis (n=35). Each participant completed a structured clinical interview along with measures of depression, hostile interpretation bias, and trait hostility. In Study 2, a sample of treatment-seeking individuals w…

Attentional bias in complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is a debilitating potential consequence of bereavement. Despite the significant health costs associated w … color name death-related words than neutral words. This pattern of findings suggests an attentional bias towards loss-related events. CONCLUSIONS: This study represents the first demonstration of an information bias within CG. Consistent with cognitive models of CG, it is possible that dysphoric mood and preoccupation with the loss are maintained by s …

Information bias in endoscopic assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic assessment is observer dependent and patient history may influence the interpretation of images. This study assessed the impact of knowledge bias in a large sample of endoscopists. DESIGN: The same 2-minute video sequence of a normal gastroscopy was shown twice as part of a diagnostic quiz. The 129 endoscopists were unaware that they participated in a validation experiment. Two fictional patient histories accompanied the videos. The first case suggested reflux-like symptoms. The second case described epigastric pain in an elderly woman. Endoscopists gave diagnoses in fre…

This article looks at a cognitive behavioral intervention designed to reduce minority youths' (Latino and African-American boys) levels of r … nteractions causes display of inappropriate, peer-directed aggression. A reduction in attributional bias should produce a decrease in reactive physical and verbal aggression directed toward peers. A 12-session, attributional intervention has been designed to reduce aggressive students' tendency to infer hostile intentions in peers following ambiguous p …

Chimeric faces, visual field bias, and reaction time bias: have we been missing a trick?

The chimeric faces test is a frequently used behavioural test of lateralisation for cognitive processing. Performance on this task is typically quantified in terms of bias towards selecting faces where positive facial emotion is expressed in the viewer's left visual field, indicating right hemisphere dominance for the task. This paper examines an alternative measure that may be extracted from responses to the chimeric faces test: reaction time bias. There was a strong positive correlation between the two asymmetry measures, which remained even after controlling for sex and handedness. The poss…

Attributional Bias in the Assessment of Emotions.

This study examined whether individuals display an attributional bias when identifying the source of their emotions. Specifically, do people favor situational over dispositional explanations when attributing their negative emotions? Sixty-eight participants completed two assessments to identify the cause of emotions-one evaluating their own emotions and another evaluating someone else's. Dispositional and situational attributions were measured for both positive and negative emotions. The findings show that individuals tend to attribute their own negative emotions more to situational factors th…

A visual bias for falling objects.

Aristotle believed that objects fell at a constant velocity. However, Galileo Galilei showed that when an object falls, gravity causes it to accelerate. Regardless, Aristotle's claim raises the possibility that people's visual perception of falling motion might be biased away from acceleration towards constant velocity. We tested this idea by requiring participants to judge whether a ball moving in a simulated naturalistic setting appeared to accelerate or decelerate as a function of its motion direction and the amount of acceleration/deceleration. We found that the point of subjective constan…

Dissociation of TRIF bias and adjuvanticity.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs), a family of "pattern recognition receptors," bind microbial and host-derived molecules, leading to intracellular … ivalently to E6020, while E6020 exhibits significantly more activation of the TRIF pathway (a "TRIF bias") than sMPL. Eritoran, a TLR4/MD2 antagonist, competitively inhibited sMPL more strongly than E6020. Despite these differences, sMPL and E6020 adjuvants enhanced antibody responses to comparable extents, with balanced immunoglobulin (Ig) isotypes in …

[Cognitive bias in the context of epidemic].

In connection with the scope and duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinical judgement of clinicians and medical practitioners could be influenced such that diagnostic errors (delays and inaccuracies) may ensue. We hereby recall through two clinical scenarios the constant need for practitioners to take a step back in reflecting of the diagnostic process to avoid the « tunnel effect » which may result in delaying common and frequent infectious diseases. The flu-like symptoms presented by these patients (fever, myalgia and asthenia…) quickly prompted our emergency room colleagues to suspect

A bias for action in cancer screening?

Research that has explored public enthusiasm for cancer screening has suggested that the public may be overly enthusiastic about being screened with certain tests, and this has been attributed, in part, to lack of knowledge about the risks and benefits. In this article the authors considered the possibility that some people may be enthusiastic about screening even when they are informed and also accept that the test unquestionably does not save lives. Two studies were conducted, one that involved a nationally representative U.S. sample and another that involved an online convenience sample. Al

Surgeon bias in the medical record.

The medical chart is presumed to be an impartial record of a patient's history, examination, and treatment. This study was designed to determine if hand surgeons introduce selective bias into the medical record. Fifty consecutive new patients were referred to a hand surgery practice for presumed carpal tunnel syndrome. Forty-four patients were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and were eligible for study inclusion. Prior to evaluation, all patients wrote in free-response fashion and diagrammed their symptom quality and location. Surgeon dictations from these visits were then evaluated agai…
