Alcohol Binge Drinking: Negative and Positive Valence System Abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Each year, 3 million deaths occur owing to alcohol misuse. Translational studies are crucial to translate preclinical findings to patients. Preclinical studies have highlighted abnormalities in specific brain systems, with these forming the basis of allostasis theory. However, few studies have tested predictions in humans using neuroimaging. METHODS: We used a Research Domain Criteria approach to test allostasis theory predictions of blunted positive valence system (PVS) and abnormally increased negative valence system (NVS) responses in 57 binge alcohol drinking subjects and heal

Reflection impulsivity in binge drinking: behavioural and volumetric correlates.

The degree to which an individual accumulates evidence prior to making a decision, also known as reflection impulsivity, can be affected in psychiatric disorders. Here, we study decisional impulsivity in binge drinkers, a group at elevated risk for developing alcohol use disorders, comparing two tasks assessing reflection impulsivity and a delay discounting task, hypothesizing impairments in both subtypes of impulsivity. We also assess volumetric correlates of reflection impulsivity focusing on regions previously implicated in functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Sixty binge drinkers

Perceived Risk of Binge Drinking among Older Alcohol Users: Associations with Alcohol Use Frequency, Binge Drinking, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Alcohol Treatment Use.

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol

Effects of heavy drinking, binge drinking, and family history of alcoholism on regional brain metabolites.

BACKGROUND: The main goals are to investigate the effects of chronic active heavy drinking on N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and other metabolites throughout the brain and to determine whether they are affected by family history (FH) of alcoholism and long-term drinking pattern. METHODS: Forty-six chronic heavy drinkers (HD) and 52 light drinkers (LD) were recruited from the community and compared on measures of regional brain structure using magnetic resonance imaging and measures of common brain metabolites in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) of the major lobes, subcortical nuclei, brainstem

Sources of alcohol and associations with drinking frequency and binge drinking among a large sample of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking remains a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to a wide range of health and social harms. While adolescent alcohol use has been widely studied, there is limited evidence on how adolescents obtain alcohol and how these sources relate to drinking behaviours. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 8,507 Grades 9-12 students participating in the 2022-2023 COMPASS study across 66 schools in Canada. Analyses were restricted to students who reported alcohol use in the past 12 months. Proportional odds mixed models assessed associations bet

Machine learning in the prediction of binge drinking: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) refers to episodes of excessive alcohol consumption, which are associated with various acute and long-term consequences. Despite its high prevalence and negative impacts, predictive features for BD remain lacking. This study aims to review machine learning (ML) research on BD, comparing different algorithms and types of data, trying to identify promising models and variables that may help identify individuals at risk. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to identify relevant studies published before July 2, 2026. 21 studies w

Binge drinking in childhood and adolescence: epidemiology, consequences, and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Episodic excessive alcohol consumption ("binge drinking") among children and adolescents has become a serious public health problem in Germany and is associated with a variety of risks. METHODS: Selective literature search of the Ovid Medline database from 1998 to 2008. RESULTS: Episodic excessive alcohol consumption is associated not only with somatic complications, but also with traffic accidents and other types of accident, violent behavior, and suicide. The more frequently a child or adolescent drinks to excess, and the younger he or she is, the greater is the risk of develop

Binge Drinking and Crime: Accounting for Alcohol Availability in Neighborhoods.

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

Cognitive and affective empathy in binge drinking during late adolescence.

Empathy-the ability to understand and share the feelings of others-has been identified as a potential correlate of binge drinking behaviors in adolescence. Our preregistered study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive and affective empathy and alcohol consumption in late adolescence. Building on prior research, we predicted a dissociation of cognitive and affective empathy related to alcohol consumption. Specifically, we hypothesized that whereas a negative association between affective empathy and alcohol consumption would emerge, no significant association would be observed

Community Disorganization, Anxiety, and Binge Drinking Among U.S. Young Adults.

Introduction: Anxiety and binge drinking are prevalent among young adults. Anxiety has been shown to increase the risk of binge drinking, and community-level stressors such as crime and lack of cohesion may further influence this association. Living in a community with increased stressors, such as high crime, may exacerbate the association between anxiety and binge drinking. However, few studies have examined these associations among young adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if community disorganization moderates the association between anxiety and binge drinking amon

Binge drinking in American Indian Alaskan Native college attending students.

OBJECTIVES: American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) populations have the highest rate of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Binge drinking is a known predecessor of AUD and is prevalent in college-attending populations. However, little is known about the prevalence and risk factors related to AIAN college student binge drinking. The current study examines prevalence of binge drinking and association with socio-demographic features, other substance use, exposure to discrimination and feelings of belonging within collegiate institutions. DESIGN: Data were collected by the Healthy Minds Study. Presen

P3 components and adolescent binge drinking in Southwest California Indians.

In adolescence, consuming a large number of drinks over a short interval of time (e.g. binging) is not an uncommon occurrence. Since adolescence is an important neurodevelopmental period, the effect of binge drinking on brain and behavior has become a significant health concern. The present study evaluated event-related potentials (ERPs) in young adult Southwest California Indians who had a history of binge drinking during their adolescence. One hundred twenty five participants who were currently 18-25 yrs of age who were free of Axis I psychiatric diagnoses were categorized as: 1) reporting n

Shared and Unique Risk Factors for Binge Eating and Binge Drinking in a Community-based Sample of Girls.

Binge eating and binge drinking commonly onset in adolescence and frequently co-occur with one another, especially among females. Understanding shared and unique risk factors for these behaviors can inform etiological models and elucidation of common and specific prevention/intervention targets. We analyzed self-report data from 1,994 participants of the Pittsburgh Girls Study, a population-based longitudinal study of behavioral and emotional development. We used path analysis to examine the impact of age 14 predictor variables on age 16 binge eating and drinking, adjusting for these behaviors

Longitudinal Associations of Binge Drinking with Interpersonal Violence Among Adolescents.

Binge drinking may be associated with adolescents' experience of multiple types of interpersonal violence perpetration and victimization, and if so, could be a malleable intervention target to prevent interpersonal violence. The current article explores the between- and within-person associations of binge drinking (i.e., 4/5 or more drinks in a row for girls/boys) with interpersonal violence among adolescents (N = 1322, 50.3% girls/women, 88.9% White/non-Hispanic, 85.9% heterosexual, 18.6% free/reduced lunch, aged 13-19) using a longitudinal design (three waves of data collection across more t

Acute renal failure following binge drinking and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

Two college students who developed reversible acute deterioration in renal function following binge drinking of beer and the use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are reported. Both patients presented with back and flank pain with muscle tenderness, but showed no evidence of overt rhabdomyolysis. The first case had marked renal failure, with a peak serum creatinine reaching 575 mumol/L (6.5 mg/dL), and acute tubular necrosis was documented by renal biopsy. The second case had only modest elevation in serum creatinine, and renal function rapidly improved on rehydration. The contri

Reward Processing in Binge Eating and Harmful Drinking: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating and harmful drinking commonly co-occur, which worsens the physical and psychological consequences associated with either behavior alone. Reward processing alterations have been demonstrated among individuals who engage in binge eating or harmful drinking alone; however, there is limited understanding of how different components of reward processing might relate to both behaviors together and in isolation. The current systematic review aimed to consolidate knowledge on the shared and unique reward processes associated with binge eating and harmful drinking, with findings

Social decision making in binge drinking: An exploration through moral dilemmas.

OBJECTIVE: The continuum hypothesis proposes that binge drinking and severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) share qualitatively similar cognitive and emotional impairments. In SAUD, these deficits have a demonstrated impact on social decision making, resulting in a utilitarian bias. Namely, when confronted with moral dilemmas, patients with SAUD tend to focus on the consequences of their actions rather than on social norms. However, social decision-making abilities remain unexplored in binge drinking. We offered the first insights on the generalization of the continuum hypothesis to social decisio

A Causal Analysis of Young Adults' Binge Drinking Reduction and Cessation.

BACKGROUND: This study, using the multiple disadvantage model (MDM), sought to identify factors (disadvantaging social disorganization, social structural, social integration, health/mental health, co-occurring substance use, and substance treatment access factors) in young adults' binge drinking reduction and cessation in the United States. METHODS: We extracted data on 942 young adult binge drinkers (25-34 years, 47.8% female) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), carrying out a temporal-ordered causal analysis, meaning the evaluation of select vari
