Biosurfactants are valuable microbial metabolites with broad industrial and environmental applications. In this study, we investigated biosurfactant production by Bacillus subtilis group strains using residual glycerol as the sole carbon source, while also evaluating their enzymatic activity and antimicrobial properties. PCR-based gene detection confirmed the presence of genes encoding surfactin, fengycin, and iturin peptide biosynthesis. Crude glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production, supported biosurfactant synthesis by the tested strains. Strains CCMA 0087, 0658, and 2031 exhibited die…

Biosurfactants synthesized by microorganisms represent safe and sustainable alternatives to the use of synthetic surfactants, due to their lower toxicity, better biodegradability and biocompatibility, and their production from low-cost feedstocks. In line with this, the present study describes the physical, chemical, and functional characterization of the biopolymer secreted by the bacterium Burkholderia thailandensis DSM 13276, envisaging its validation as a biosurfactant. The biopolymer was found to be a glycolipopeptide with carbohydrate and protein contents of 33.1 ± 6.4% and 23.0 ± 3.2%, …

Biofilms are composed of autogenously secreted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and affect nearly all aspects of human activity. Biofilms with negative health and economic effects can be controlled through the integrated use of surfactants and mechanical force. However, the relationships between the surfactant molecular structures and biofilm removal pathways have not been sufficiently elucidated. Additionally, Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a skin commensal bacterium with biofilm-forming capabilities that can exacerbate acne vulgaris, has been rarely investigated. In this study, we e

Biofilm-related infections represent a long-standing problem in clinical and industrial environments because of their innate resistance to standard antimicrobials. Biosurfactants, which are amphiphilic and biodegradable compounds made by microorganisms, are showing great promise as anti-biofilm agents due to their wide-ranging antimicrobial effects and minimal toxicity. They function by reducing bacterial adhesion, destabilizing the structural integrity of the extracellular polymeric substance matrix, and enhancing membrane permeability, which may ultimately lead to cell lysis. The multifuncti…

Biosurfactants are promising biotechnological compounds for respiratory diseases due to their ability to act as antimicrobials, antivirals, and anti-inflammatories, as well as their capacity to reduce pulmonary surface tension. In vitro evidence shows that molecules such as surfactin, rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, and MELs can partially mimic natural pulmonary surfactant, promote alveolar stabilization, and improve respiratory mechanics. Furthermore, these compounds modulate essential inflammatory pathways, including NF-κB, MAPK, and inflammasomes (NLRP3 and AIM2), leading to decreased producti…

The Thar Desert, one of the most extreme arid ecosystems, harbours a diverse and resilient microbial community adapted to high temperatures, low moisture, and osmotic stress. In this study, soil samples collected from sand dunes in Churu, Rajasthan, were explored for the isolation of biosurfactant-producing bacteria. A total of ten morphologically distinct bacterial isolates were obtained and screened for biosurfactant activity using drop collapse (DC), emulsification index percentage (EA24) %, surface tension (ST), and interfacial tension (IFT) assays. Among them, three isolates S4, S6, and S

Effective protection of soil fungi from predators is crucial for their survival in the niche. Thus, fungi have developed efficient defence strategies. We discovered that soil beneficial Mortierella fungi employ a potent cytotoxin (necroxime) against fungivorous nematodes. Interestingly, this anthelminthic agent is produced by bacterial endosymbionts (Candidatus Mycoavidus necroximicus) residing within the fungus. Analysis of the symbiont's genome indicated a rich biosynthetic potential, yet nothing has been known about additional metabolites and their potential synergistic functions. Here we r

Globally, the occurrence of biofilm associated infection has become an alarming menace to the medical fraternity because the thick exopolysaccharide layer encasing the biofilms makes the biofilm producing pathogens inherently resistant to antibiotics. Candida albicans, the most common pathogen among Candida spp. is the causative agent for superficial and invasive candidiasis. The morphological phase switching from yeast to hyphal form is one of the virulent traits of C. albicans critical for its pathogenicity. Owing to the emergence of antifungal resistance among this opportunistic fungus, the

Microbial pollutant removal capabilities can be determined and exploited to accomplish bioremediation of hydrocarbon-polluted environments. Thus, increasing knowledge on environmental behavior of different petroleum products can lead to better bioremediation strategies. Biodegradation can be enhanced by adding biosurfactants to hydrocarbon-degrading microorganism consortia. This work aimed to improve petroleum products biodegradation by using a biosurfactant produced by Bacillus subtilis. The produced biosurfactant was added to biodegradation assays containing crude oil, diesel, and kerosene. …

A microbial surfactant (biosurfactant) was investigated for its potential to enhance bioavailability and, hence, the biodegradation of octadecane. The rhamnolipid biosurfactant used in this study was extracted from culture supernatants after growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 in phosphate-limited proteose peptone-glucose-ammonium salts medium. Dispersion of octadecane in aqueous solutions was dramatically enhanced by 300 mg of the rhamnolipid biosurfactant per liter, increasing by a factor of more than 4 orders of magnitude, from 0.009 to > 250 mg/liter. The relative enhancement of oct

Biofilms rapidly form on medical devices such as urinary catheters and surgical materials. These biofilms compromise patient safety and undermine infection prevention and control (IPC). Biofilms also reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics and disinfectants. As a result, they increase healthcare-associated infections and increase costs through device failure and the need for maintenance or replacement. Researchers are increasingly exploring biosurfactants (BSs) as surface coatings and cleaning additives to prevent microbial attachment and disrupt early biofilm formation on medical devices and …

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is highly susceptible to fungal diseases, particularly downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola. Environmental contamination and potential health risks to viticulturists have raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of chemical control. In this study, we evaluated the potential of four biosurfactants-surfactin, rhamnolipid, sophorolipid, and spiculisporic acid-as alternative agents to chemical fungicides for disease management in viticulture. Surfactin, rhamnolipid, and sophorolipid, but not spiculisporic acid, significantly reduced the severity of grape …

Herein we report the structure and selected properties of a new class of biosurfactants that we have named the flavolipids. The flavolipids exhibit a unique polar moiety that features citric acid and two cadaverine molecules. Flavolipids were produced by a soil isolate, Flavobacterium sp. strain MTN11 (accession number AY162137), during growth in mineral salts medium, with 2% glucose as the sole carbon and energy source. MTN11 produced a mixture of at least 37 flavolipids ranging from 584 to 686 in molecular weight (MW). The structure of the major component (23%; MW = 668) was determined to be…

There is currently a lack of scientific understanding regarding how bio-surfactants influence the mobility of graphene oxide (GO) through saturated porous media. In this study, the transport characteristics of GO through porous media with different heterogeneities (i.e., quartz sand and goethite-coated sand) after the addition of saponin (a representative bio-surfactant) were investigated. The results demonstrated that saponin (3-10 mg L-1) promoted GO mobility in both types of porous media at pH 7.0. This trend was attributed to the competitive deposition between nanoparticles and bio-surfact

Biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas guguanensis D30 was reported using mineral oil in submerged condition. Twelve medium components were tested at two levels by Plackett-Burman design, among them, mineral oil, yeast extract, peptone, MgSO4, and CaCl2 found significant on the basis of emulsification index. These five significant components were further optimized through central composite design (CCD). The experimental design was successfully used for regression analysis and the significant model suggested the solution of 10% (v/v) mineral oil, 3.0 g/L (w/v) yeast extract and 0.2 g/L (w/v) p

Oil spills in oceans cause irreparable damage to marine life and harm the coastal populations of affected areas. It is therefore fundamental to develop treatment strategies for such spills. Currently, chemical dispersants have been used during oil spills, although these agents have been increasingly restricted due to their toxic potential. Thus, the aim of the present study was to formulate a biodegradable commercial biosurfactant for application as a dispersant. Biosurfactants are scientifically known biomolecules produced by microorganisms capable of allowing water-oil interaction. Thus, a b…
