Designed for the enhancement of structure mechanostability and strength: Suture-serrate margins of bivalve shells.

Through biological evolution, bivalve mollusks developed shells to improve the utilization of metabolic energy and provide protection against external threats. In addition to the mechanical optimization of the microstructure, the design of the macroscopic shape of a bivalve shell naturally becomes a potential approach to achieving the aforementioned purposes. While the functions of some features of mollusk shells have been studied, the role of the suture-serrate margins, a common morphology of bivalve shell edges, in the global mechanical behaviors of bivalve shells requires further exploratio

Baseline pathological data of the wedge clam Donax trunculus from the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Basin).

In recent years, a collapse in Donax trunculus fishing yields has occurred in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Basin). There is little information available on the impact disease may have had on D. trunculus populations. For the first time, a pathological survey was performed on the natural beds of the bivalve on the Campania and Lazio coasts, western Italy. Detected pathogens and related diseases were analysed, and their prevalence and mean intensity values were calculated. Viral particles, Chlamydia-like organisms, ciliates, coccidians, microcells and trematodes were observed. An unknown ci

Morphological and functional characterization of hemocytes from two deep-sea vesicomyid clams Phreagena okutanii and Abyssogena phaseoliformis.

Deep-sea vesicomyid clams harboring intracellular symbiotic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are often dominant in chemosynthetic animal communities. Although they are known to have erythrocytes, little is known about other hemocytes. To investigate the types and roles of various hemocytes in vesicomyid clams, we performed morphological, histochemical and functional characterization of the hemocytes in two species, Phreagena okutanii, collected from 873 to 978 m depth, and Abyssogena phaseoliformis, from 5199 to 5355 m. Both were found to have three types of hemocytes: erythrocytes (ERCs), eosinophil

Preventing mussel adhesion using lubricant-infused materials.

Mussels are opportunistic macrofouling organisms that can attach to most immersed solid surfaces, leading to serious economic and ecological consequences for the maritime and aquaculture industries. We demonstrate that lubricant-infused coatings exhibit very low preferential mussel attachment and ultralow adhesive strengths under both controlled laboratory conditions and in marine field studies. Detailed investigations across multiple length scales-from the molecular-scale characterization of deposited adhesive proteins to nanoscale contact mechanics to macroscale live observations-suggest tha

Mineral phase in shell repair of Manila clam Venerupis philippinarum affected by brown ring disease.

The mineral phase of shell repair in the Manila clam Venerupis philippinarum affected by brown ring disease (BRD) was characterised at various scales and at various stages of shell repair by confocal Raman microspectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. Spherulitic and quadrangular aragonite microstructures associated with polyene pigments were clearly observed. Von Kossa staining showed that at the beginning of shell repair, hemocytes are filled with insoluble calcium carbonate salts in all fluids and then are transported toward the extrapallial fluids and the repair sites. Our analyses s

Chromosome-level genome assembly of the Pacific geoduck Panopea generosa reveals major inter- and intrachromosomal rearrangements and substantial expansion of the copine gene family.

The Pacific geoduck Panopea generosa (class Bivalvia, order Adapedonta, family Hiatellidae, genus Panopea) is the largest known burrowing bivalve with considerable commercial value. Pacific geoduck and other geoduck clams play important roles in maintaining ecosystem health for their filter feeding habit and coupling pelagic and benthic processes. Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of P. generosa to characterize its phylogeny and molecular mechanisms of its life strategies. The assembled P. generosa genome consists of 19 chromosomes with a size of 1.47 Gb, a contig…

The role of solar radiation and tidal emersion on oxidative stress and glutathione synthesis in mussels exposed to air.

Preparation for oxidative stress (POS) is a widespread adaptive response to harsh environmental conditions, whose hallmark is the upregulation of antioxidants. In contrast to controlled laboratory settings, animals are exposed to multiple abiotic stressors under natural field conditions. Still, the interplay between different environmental factors in modulating redox metabolism in natural settings remains largely unexplored. Here, we aim to shed light on this topic by assessing changes in redox metabolism in the mussel Brachidontes solisianus naturally exposed to a tidal cycle. We compared the

Multiresistant bacteria: Invisible enemies of freshwater mussels.

Freshwater mussels are among the most endangered groups of fauna anywhere in world. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of resistant strains. These antibiotic-resistant bacteria play a key role in increasing the risk allied with the use of surface water and in spread of resistance genes. Two endangered freshwater mussel species, Margaritifera margaritifera and Potomida littoralis, were sampled at 4 sampling sites along a 50 km stretch of River Tua. Water samples were taken at same sites. Of the total of 135 isolates, 64.44% (39.26% from water and 25.19% from mussels)

The stress-immunity axis in shellfish.

It is a difficult task to describe what constitutes a 'Работает' shellfish (e.g., crustacean, bivalve). Visible defects such as discolouration, missing limbs or spines, fouling, lesions, and exoskeletal fractures can be indicative of underlying issues, senescence, or a 'stressed' animal. The absence of such symptoms is not evidence of a disease-free or a stress-free state. Now, more than ever, aquatic invertebrates must cope with acute and chronic environmental perturbations, such as, heatwaves and cold shocks, xenobiotic contaminants, intoxication events, and promiscuous pathogens expanding th

Effect of pea crab Pinnotheres vicajii (Chhapgar, 1957) on immunocompetence of bivalve Paphia malabarica (Chemnitz, 1782).

The endosymbiont-host relationship between a pea crab and its bivalve host has been studied previously using bivalve's multi-physiological parameters. The present study is first of its kind that uses hemocyte's immune functionality to evaluate the symbiotic relationship between bivalve Paphia malabarica and its symbiont crab, Pinnotheres vicajii. The sampling was carried out at two stations (differed in nutrient concentration, productivity, and bacterial abundance) located along the southwest coast of India. The results showed lower immunocompetence in the case of bivalves infested with pea cr

Marine Bioinspired Underwater Contact Adhesion.

Marine mussels and barnacles are sessile biofouling organisms that adhere to a number of surfaces in wet environments and maintain remarkably strong bonds. Previous synthetic approaches to mimic biological wet adhesive properties have focused mainly on the catechol moiety, present in mussel foot proteins (mfps), and especially rich in the interfacial mfps, for example, mfp-3 and -5, found at the interface between the mussel plaque and substrate. Barnacles, however, do not use Dopa for their wet adhesion, but are instead rich in noncatecholic aromatic residues. Due to this anomaly, we were intr

When size matters: the first comprehensive anatomical study of a species of "Condylocardiidae", an extremely miniaturized bivalve.

'Miniaturization' is a widespread phenomenon among the Metazoa. In the molluscan class Bivalvia, records of miniaturization are numerous. Among the Archiheterodonta, Warrana besnardi (Klappenbach, 1963) has attracted attention for its tiny size, which does not exceed 1.5 mm in shell length, and because it belongs to a group with limited anatomical information and often-debated status, the "Condylocardiidae" (which recent molecular studies place deeply nested within the family Carditidae). All species of Warrana Laseron, 1953 are small-bodied, and so miniaturization presumably occurred from a l…

Thiosocius teredinicola gen. nov., sp. nov., a sulfur-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic endosymbiont cultivated from the gills of the giant shipworm, Kuphus polythalamius.

A chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing, diazotrophic, facultatively heterotrophic, endosymbiotic bacterium, designated as strain 2141T, was isolated from the gills of the giant shipworm Kuphus polythalamius (Teredinidae: Bivalvia). Based on its 16S rRNA sequence, the endosymbiont falls within a clade that includes the as-yet-uncultivated thioautotrophic symbionts of a marine ciliate and hydrothermal vent gastropods, uncultivated marine sediment bacteria, and a free-living sulfur-oxidizing bacterium ODIII6, all of which belong to the Gammaproteobacteria. The endosymbiont is Gram-negative, rod…

Elevated trace element concentrations in Arabian scallops, Natal rock oysters, and Intermediate clams in the Persian Gulf.

BACKGROUNDS: This study aimed to quantify trace element concentrations in Arabian scallops (Mimachlamys sanguinea), Natal rock oysters (Saccostrea cucullata), and Intermediate clams (Tivela damaoides). These elements accumulate over time from water, food, and sediment, potentially leading to toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens were collected from coastal waters around Larak Island, processed, and analyzed for trace elements including copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn), vanadium (V), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), nicke

Trans-2-nonadecyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (TNHD) purified from freshwater clams markedly alleviates dimethylnitrosamine-induced hepatic fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis occurs due to injury or inflammation, which results in the excessive production of collagen and the formation of fibrotic scar tissue that impairs liver function. Despite the limited treatment options available, freshwater clams may hold promise in the treatment of liver fibrosis. In this study, we demonstrated the effects of ethanol extract of freshwater clam (FCE), ethyl acetate extract of FCE (EA-FCE), and trans-2-nonadecyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (TNHD) on liver fibrosis induced by dimethylnitrosamine (DMN). Administration of FCE and TNHD alleviated liver injury, inc

Environmental influence on summer survival of Manila Clam Ruditapes philippinarum: A case study in an aquaculture bay.

The aquaculture of Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) is under threat due to its high mortality in summer. To investigate the environmental influence on mortality of the species, we have conducted field surveys in the aquaculture area in Laizhou Bay, during the summers of 2019 and 2020. Environmental and biological data were collected. The results of data analysis have shown that in 2020, large-scale mortality events were not recorded and spatial variations of environmental variables were no significant within the survey area. However, in August 2019, significant variations of environmental

Crystallographic control of the fabrication of an extremely sophisticated shell surface microornament in the glass scallop Catillopecten.

The external surface microornament of the glass scallops Catillopecten natalyae and malyutinae is made by calcitic spiny projections consisting of a stem that later divides into three equally spaced and inclined branches (here called aerials). C. natalyae contains larger and smaller aerials, whereas C. malyutinae only secreted aerials of the second type. A remarkable feature is that aerials within each type are fairly similar in size and shape and highly co-oriented, thus constituting a most sophisticated microornament. We demonstrate that aerials are single crystals whose morphology is strong

Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) from the Kodiak Archipelago, Alaska.

Consumption of toxic butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) is the most frequent cause of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in Alaskan coastal communities. This study examines seasonal variation in total paralytic shellfish toxin concentrations and congener distribution in tissues of butter clams collected in three communities in the Kodiak Islands, Alaska: the City of Kodiak, Ouzinkie and Old Harbor. In response to questions from local harvesters, the efficacy of removing particular clam tissues on total toxin levels was also assessed. Butter clam samples were collected ∼monthly during 2015-2020
