The European regulation on blood and blood components is declined in four directives: the Directive 2002/98/EC known as "mother Directive" and three directives called "daughter Directives" 2004/33/EC, 2005/61/EC and 2005/62/EC. It constitutes a common basis of provisions of quality and safety of blood in the European Union (EU), thus guaranteeing this safety and this quality with the whole of the citizens circulating in Member States of the Union. It cannot prevent a Member State for maintaining or introducing more stringent protective measures. It encourages the anonymous, voluntary and unpai…

The immediate transfusion of uncrossmatched type O blood in the initial resuscitation of the trauma victim remains controversial. To examine difficulties in crossmatching blood for later transfusions after use of uncrossmatched type O blood, we undertook a prospective 23-month study at a level I trauma center. One hundred thirty-five severely injured patients received uncrossmatched type O blood during the study period. Sixty-one patients (45%) died and 76 patients (56%) underwent emergent operation. There were no major transfusion reactions. Six patients had blood antigen-antibodies present o…

AIM: About 50% of premature neonates (PN) are treated with transfusion of packed red blood cells (PRBC) collected from adult donors, which has been suggested to potentially provoke PN pathologies, characterized as blood circulation disorders. RBC have properties that are key determinants of blood circulation, primarily the cell deformability. In previous studies we have shown that transfusion of RBC with reduced deformability impaired the transfusion outcome. Although RBC of PN (PN-RBC) are larger, and their microvessels are narrower than those of adults, their blood circulation is very effici…

We have investigated various types of blood culture bottles which are mainly used at present and posed problems present in the blood culture bottles. First, there are differences between resin and ecosorb in the ability to adsorb and inactivate antibiotics in the blood. Second, the delay in placing the bottle (into which blood was inoculated) to the automatic instrument (delay in the start of incubation) greatly affects the automatic detection by BACTEC system and shows false negatives. Third, when the same blood is incubated in plural bottles (aerobic and anaerobic bottles), the differences a…

A 37-year-old woman developed red painful eyes, diarrhea, and painful oral and genital ulcerations. Optic disk swelling was noted bilaterally. Colonoscopy was significant for granulomatous lesions consistent with Crohn disease. Epidemiologic factors, diagnostic criteria, and differentiating characteristics for Behcet disease and Crohn disease are discussed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review focuses on the common and uncommon adverse events that occur during or after whole-blood donation. The incidence of seeking outside medical care for an adverse event is at least 1 in 3400 blood donations. Physicians may encounter blood donors with adverse events and should be familiar with their prognosis and treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are 15 million whole-blood donations per year in the United States, and one third of the donors develop one or more adverse events. A recent study defined the common complications based on a postdonation interview as bruise…

INTRODUCTION: Since being designated as medicines by World Health Organization (WHO), blood components are subject to pharmacovigilance reporting. Using VigiBase, the WHO global database of individual case safety reports (ICSRs), we characterized reports of adverse reactions for all blood products.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: ICSRs involving blood products as the suspected medicine in VigiBase between 1968 and 2021 were extracted. MedDRA preferred terms and the International Society of Blood Transfusion haemovigilance definitions were used to stratify adverse reactions. Descriptive statistics w…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is conflicting evidence in the literature as to whether there is a blood-borne virus (BBV) risk associated with tattoos in licensed premises. However, blood donors are currently deferred from blood donation in Australia for 4 months after any tattoo. We aimed to assess the incidence of BBVs in blood donors who declared tattoos and evaluate the risk to blood safety through risk modelling.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Donors from 2013 to 2016 with a tattoo deferral on their blood donor file with pre- and post-BBV testing were analysed to determine an incidence of BBVs…

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have reported differences of blood pressure (BP) according to BP measurement methods, studies in Korean population were scarce. This study aimed to compare BP differences according to different BP measurement methods and assess hypertension phenotype.
METHODS: This prospective study recruited 183 individuals (mean 55.9 years; 51.4% males). The BP measurements included office BP (auscultatory attended office BP [ausAOBP], automated attended office BP [aAOBP], and automated unattended office BP [aUAOBP]) and out-of-office BP (home BP [HBP] and ambulatory BP…

Having a blood transfusion carries risks for patients. To minimise these risks, nurses must be aware of the ABO group system, components of blood and how they should be stored, handled, checked and administered. They must also be aware of possible adverse events during or after transfusion, how to monitor patients and how to deal with adverse events should they occur. All staff involved at any stage must be trained and aware of hospital policy and all actions must be accurately recorded to ensure the process is as safe as possible.
