Increasing blood and plasma viscosity is generally associated with pathological conditions, and increased cardiovascular risk, a perception based in part on studies where blood viscosity is increased to extreme values attained by hemoconcentration. Present studies, supported by epidemiological studies in humans, show that moderate increases in Hct improve cardiovascular function and vice versa. This result is due to the nonlinear regulation of peripheral vascular resistance arising from the increased production of nitric oxide following the increase of shear stress on the vascular wall due to …

A mathematical theory which could be used to explain a clinical observation in some sickle-cell anemia patients is proposed. It is shown that if the energy stored in the elastic walls of the artery of such a patient is accompanied by thermal effects, then the existence of a local hot spot on the body of a sickle-cell anemia patient could be due to shock formation even when the viscosity of the blood is zero. On the other hand, if the energy stored is not accompanied by thermal effects, then a jump in the temperature can only occur if the viscosity is not zero. We give the location of such a ju

Although intracellular viscosity is greatly increased in deoxygenated sickle cells, the viscosity of blood is not, because patients' packed cell volumes (PCV) are usually extremely low (15-25%). A young women with sickle cell anemia was admitted with a typical painful crisis, and was found to have a PCV of 39% with a reticulocyte count of 3.6%. During a hospitalization of 48 h, the PCV rose to 46%; her pain subsided but her behavior became bizarre, cardiopulmonary arrest occurred, and she could not be resuscitated. At autopsy, no abnormalities were found except for congested blood vessels cont

Severe side effects of cocaine consumption are vasoocclusive events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. We have hypothesized that cocaine could affect red blood cells (RBCs) and alter the rheological behaviour of blood. Heparinized blood from healthy volunteers was incubated with a final hematocrit of 45% with increasing cocaine concentrations: 0, 10, 100, 1000, and 10'000 μmol/L plasma. Time dependence of the shape change was tested in phosphate buffered saline containing cocaine. RBCs were fixed in 1% glutaraldehyde for morphological analysis. Blood viscosity was measured with a Couett…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Wall shear stress contributes to atherosclerosis progression and plaque rupture. There are limited studies for statin as a major contributing factor on whole blood viscosity (WBV) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study investigates the effect of statin on WBV in ACS patients.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 189 consecutive patients (mean age, 61.3±10.9 years; 132 males; ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, n=52; non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, n=84; unstable angina n=53). Patients were divided into two group…

OBJECTIVES: As most clinical studies measure whole blood viscosity (WBV) from peripheral samples, potential differences in WBV obtained from the coronary arteries are often ignored. This study investigated differences in WBV measured from coronary artery specimens in patients with and without acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients with chest pain who underwent diagnostic coronary angiography were divided into two groups [non-ACS (n = 16), ACS (n = 22)]. The ACS group consisted of unstable angina (n = 13) and acute myocardial infarction (n = 9) patients. Two b…

1. In a cross-sectional study, 32 insulin-treated diabetic patients had elevated low shear (27.1 vs 22.1 mPa s, P less than 0.05) and high s … nogen levels were higher in the diabetic group (P less than 0.05) and correlated with the low shear blood viscosity (rs = 0.38, P less than 0.05). 3. Ventricular assist devices assist in blood circulation and form a crucial component of artificial hearts. While it is important to measure parameters such as the flow rate, pressure head and viscosity of the blood, implanting additional devices to do such measurements is inadvisable. To this end, we demonstrate the adaptation of a ventricular assist device for the purpose of measuring blood viscosity. Such an approach eliminates the need for additional dedicated viscometers in artificial hearts. In the proposed method, the blood viscosity is measured by applying radial vibrational excitation t…

One particular complexity of coronary artery is the natural tapering of the vessel with proximal segments having larger caliber and distal t … rosis. Further, the presence of these microrecirculations influence strongly on the local levels of blood viscosity in the vicinity of the malapposed stent struts. The observation of secondary microrecirculations and changes in blood rheology is believed to complement the wall (-based) shear stress, perhaps providing additional physical explanations for tissue ac …

In chronic hypoxemia blood flow and oxygen supply to vital organs are maintained, but to nonvital organs they are decreased. We measured organ blood flows (microspheres) and whole blood viscosity in 10 chronically hypoxemic lambs, with an atrial septal defect and pulmonary stenosis, and in 8 control lambs. Vascular hindrance (resistance/viscosity) was calculated to determine to what extent the effect of increased blood viscosity on organ blood flow was compensated for by a decrease in vascular tone. Arterial oxygen saturation was decreased (68 +/- 10 vs. 91 +/- 3%, P < 0.001), and both hemoglo…

OBJECTIVE: A direct relationship between blood pressure and viscosity has frequently been reported, although clear data are not available. To better understand the relationship between these two variables, we evaluated blood viscosity and blood pressure in a group of healthy subjects without cardiovascular risk factors.
METHODS: Healthy subjects were selected from participants in a campaign of prevention of cardiovascular disease (n = 103). They underwent blood sampling for measurement of plasma and blood viscosity, haematocrit, blood lipids and glucose. The quantity and distribution of body …
