[Relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition].

To study the relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition, we measured fat body mass and lean body mass by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (XR-26, Norland), and weighed the diaphragms of patients at autopsy. The subjects were 22 patients with various diseases (13 men and 9 women, aged 72.6 +/- 9.5 years). In 8 of the patients, respiratory muscle strength was assessed with maximal pressure at the mouth. The diaphragm weight was 185.2 +/- 58.2 g and it correlated significantly with lean body mass (r = 0.77, r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Maximal inspiratory pressure at TLC correlated signif

Putting body weight and osteoporosis into perspective.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD). Women more than men are at risk for osteoporosis-related fractures, especially in the wrists, lumbar spine, and hips. Numerous diet and lifestyle factors, including body weight, influence BMD, and in turn, fracture risk. BMD in the total body, hip, lumbar spine, and radius is weakly to moderately correlated to body weight, fat mass, and lean body mass in adolescent, perimenopausal, and elderly women, possibly as the result of stress on the skeleton from the mechanical loading of body weight alone. In addition, greater

Impact of Postbariatric Body Contouring Procedures on Patient Body Weight and Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment that induces substantial and sustained weight loss through restriction, malabsorption, and hormonal mechanisms that regulate appetite and energy balance. This study aimed to assess the role of body contouring surgery in enhancing long-term weight loss maintenance and improving metabolic outcomes following bariatric surgery. METHODS: This prospective comparative study was conducted at Assiut University Hospitals on 60 postbariatric (sleeve) patients aged 20 to 60 years who underwent body contouring surgery and had been stable within 5 kg

Associations between body weight, psychiatric disorders and body image in female adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: The study explored associations between body weight, psychiatric disorders and body image in a nonclinical sample of female adolescents. It was also investigated whether complaints of negative body image could be an indicator of psychiatric morbidity. METHODS: A sample of 136 Swiss female high school students, 15-20 years of age, initially had weight, height and body image (FBeK questionnaire) assessed and were screened for psychiatric morbidity (SSQ). Subsequently, they were assessed using the DIA-X psychiatric interview which generates DSM-IV diagnoses. Univariate, multivariate,

Growth Hormone Dosing Estimations Based on Body Weight Versus Body Surface Area.

OBJECTIVE: Both body weight (BW)- and body surface area (BSA)-based dosing regimens have been recommended for growth hormone (rhGH) replacement. The aim was to compare the two regimens to determine if either resulted in inadequate treatment depending on anthropometric factors. METHODS: The retrospective study included children diagnosed with idiopathic isolated growth hormone deficiency. BW-based dosing in mcg/kg/day was converted to BSA in mg/m2/day to determine the equivalent amounts of the given rhGH. Those with a BW-to-BSA ratio of more than 1 were allocated to the “relatively over-dosed

Body weight and the prevalence of chronic diseases.

The relation between body mass index and prevalence of 17 chronic diseases or groups of diseases was analysed using data from the 1983 Italian National Health Survey, based on a sample of 72,284 individuals aged 15 or over randomly selected within strata of geographical area, size of place of residence and of household in order to be representative of the whole Italian population. The prevalence of diabetes was directly and strongly related to body weight (age-adjusted relative risk estimates being 1.5 for overweight and 2.7 for obese men compared with normal weight individuals; 1.6 and 2.4 fo

Mice harboring the obesity-associated SNP rs1421085 exhibit increased body weight and reveal an IRX3 neuronal circuit regulating body weight.

OBJECTIVE: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1421085 has one of the highest associated risks with obesity of any SNP in the human genome. Through the generation of a novel mouse model harboring rs1421085 (OA-SNPrs142/rs142), we examined the impact of this SNP on energy balance. Furthermore, we investigated the role of IRX3, a potential mediator of the metabolic effects of rs1421085, in multiple brain regions. METHODS: To explore the impact and mechanisms of rs1421085, we monitored body weight, food intake, energy expenditure, and other metabolic parameters of OA-SNPrs142/rs142 mice u

Expected body weight in adolescents: comparison between weight-for-stature and BMI methods.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the weight-for-stature (WFS) and BMI methods are not equivalent in determining expected body weight (EBW) in adolescents with eating disorders and to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of each method to detect those <75% EBW. We hypothesized that differences in EBW would be greatest at the extremes of height. METHODS: EBW was determined for 12 047 individual adolescents aged 12 to 19 years by the WFS and BMI methods by utilizing the same National Center for Health Statistics data sets. Absolute difference between the 2

Cardiometabolic risk markers of normal weight and excess body weight in Brazilian adolescents.

Excess body weight leads to a variety of metabolic changes and increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in adulthood. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of risk markers for CVD among Brazilian adolescents of normal weight and with excess body weight. The markers included blood pressure, C-reactive protein, homocysteine, tumor necrosis factor alpha, fibrinogen, fasting insulin and glucose, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), leptin, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol

Weight, weight-related aspects of body image, and depression in early adolescent girls.

This investigation assessed the hypothesis that early adolescent girls with more negative weight-related body images would report higher levels of depressive symptoms. The Beck Depression Inventory was administered, and measures of objective weight and four dimensions of weight-related body image were obtained: self-reported weight, subjective classification of weight from very underweight to very overweight, satisfaction with weight, and concerns about weight. The results indicated that the more subjective and personal measures of weight-related body image discontent--weight dissatisfaction a

Drug dosing in patients with low body weight.

PURPOSE: To highlight important considerations when designing dosing regimens for patients with low body weight. SUMMARY: Pharmacokinetic alterations that occur in patients with low body weight could lead to inappropriate drug concentrations and adverse effects if standard doses for patients with normal body habitus are used. In contrast to information on drug dosing in patients with obesity, there is a dearth of publications concerning drug dosing in patients with low body weight. Weight descriptors available for dosing patients with low body weight are the same as those used in obese patien

Effects of Body Weight on Middle Ear Disease.

Body weight can have various effects on middle ear health. Pediatric obesity is associated with an increased risk and recurrence of otitis media with effusion. Adult obesity is associated with an increased risk of temporal bone cerebrospinal fluid leak and encephalocele, and weight loss can cause symptoms of patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction. With rising rates of obesity and widespread adoption of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists, it is increasingly important that patients are appropriately counseled on how weight changes affect the middle ear. In this review, we examine the litera

Equations to estimate prednisone dose using body weight.

BACKGROUND: In the clinical practice, prednisone (PDN) dose in children is often prescribed using the patient weight, despite dose calculation using body surface area (BSA) is assumed to be preferable, because it parallels better with PDN metabolism in human subjects. METHODS: Calculations based on body weight (W) carry the risk of underdosing, particularly in young children. Conversely, BSA estimation requires knowing the patient height, which is not always available, and more complex calculations. RESULTS: To overcome these limitations, we have developed linear equations allowing approxima

Body weight change is unpredictable after total thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: There is a common perception that total thyroidectomy causes weight gain beyond expected age-related changes, even when thyroid replacement therapy induces a euthyroid state. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for a wide spectrum of conditions experienced weight gain following surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 107 consecutive total thyroidectomy patients treated between January 2013 and June 2014. Medical records were reviewed to determine underlying pathology, thyroid status, use of antithyroid drugs and preoperati

Body-Weight Fluctuations and Outcomes in Coronary Disease.

BACKGROUND: Body-weight fluctuation is a risk factor for death and coronary events in patients without cardiovascular disease. It is not known whether variability in body weight affects outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: We determined intraindividual fluctuations in body weight from baseline weight and follow-up visits and performed a post hoc analysis of the Treating to New Targets trial, which involved assessment of the efficacy and safety of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with atorvastatin. The primary outcome was any coronary event (a composit
