Boron-doped urea-polyethylene glycol-derived carbon nanotube mimics: Metal-free catalysts for enhanced hydrogen generation via sodium borohydride methanolysis.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit exceptional properties due to their unique tubular structure but face challenges like complex synthesis, aggregation, hydrophobicity, and environmental concerns during functionalization. This study demonstrates that combining urea, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and boric acid (H3BO3) under N2 pyrolysis can overcome these issues and yield CNTs-like carbon nanostructures with excellent functionality. Varying molecular weight of PEG, amounts of PEG and H3BO3, and pyrolysis temperature allowed us to control the morphology and B-doping amount of urea-boric acid-PEG (UBP2

Efficacy of Sodium Borohydride for Autofluorescence Reduction in Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix) Lungs Under Different Antigen Retrieval Conditions.

Tissue autofluorescence (AF) is a major limitation to immunofluorescence (IF) staining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues. This study evaluated the AF reduction efficacy of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) in FFPE quail (Coturnix coturnix) lung tissues processed under heat-induced epitope retrieval (HIER) or enzyme-induced antigen retrieval (EIAR) conditions. Following antigen retrieval (AR), lung sections were treated with 1 or 2 mg/mL NaBH₄ concentrations and compared with untreated controls. Autofluorescence was evaluated across green and red channels under identical imaging setti

The borohydride-reducible compounds of human aortic elastin. Demonstration of a new cyclic amino acid in alkali hydrolysate, and changes with age and in patients with annulo-aortic ectasia including one with Marfan syndrome.

Human aortic elastin reduced with [3H]borohydride was analysed by ion-exchange chromatography after alkali or acid hydrolysis. Alkali hydrolysates of elastins contained a radioactive peak that was eluted between proline and leucine. This peak was not present in foetal elastin, but its proportion increased steadily during aging. Aortic samples from patients with annulo-aortic ectasia (aneurysm of the ascending aorta), including one with classical Marfan syndrome, contained less elastin (CNBr-insoluble material) than did the age-matched controls. The proportion of radioactivity in the new peak o

Labeling efficiency and biodistribution of Technetium-99m labeled nanoparticles: interference by colloidal tin oxide particles.

The interference of colloidal tin oxides on the biodistribution of (99m)Technetium radiolabeled chitosan nanoparticles has been overcome by using sodium borohydride instead of commonly used stannous salts as reducing agent for the reduction of (99m)Tc (VII) to lower valency states. Biodistribution of radiolabeled chitosan nanoparticles prepared by using stannous chloride method revealed localization of the radioactivity mainly in the liver and spleen while that of radiolabeled chitosan nanoparticles prepared by using sodium borohydride method manifested the presence of radioactivity in blood u

Cyanohydrin Equilibria Implicate Non-Aromatic Aldehydes in Photochemical Production of Oceanic Carbon Monoxide.

Carbonyls have previously been dismissed as significant precursors for carbon monoxide (CO) photoproduction from natural chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Here, we used hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which reacts with carbonyls to form photochemically inert cyanohydrins, as a probe to re-examine the role of carbonyls in CO photoproduction. Adding HCN to low-absorbance euphotic zone seawater decreased CO photoproduction. Modeling [HCN] (∼5 to 364 μM) vs the percent decrease in CO photoproduction (%CO↓) yielded carbonyl-cyanohydrin dissociation equilibrium constants, KD, and maximum %CO↓, %

Potential of 99mTc-LDLs labeled by two different methods for scintigraphic detection of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits.

In this study we evaluated two different 99mTc-labeling techniques to produce 99mTc-low density lipoprotein (99mTc-LDL) suitable for the scintigraphic delineation of experimental atherosclerotic lesions. The two methods are 1) a procedure that uses stannous chloride and sodium borohydride (borohydride method) and 2) a procedure that uses sodium dithionite as a reducing agent and that has been successfully applied in previous scintigraphic atherosclerosis detection (dithionite method). 99mTc-LDL produced by either method was injected into New Zealand White rabbits with diet-induced atherosclero

Masking method for improving selectivity of gold nanoclusters in fluorescence determination of mercury and copper ions.

In this report, we have developed a method that improved the selectivity of gold nanoclusters toward copper and mercury ions. Bovine serum albumin stabilized gold nanocluster responded to both these two ions through fluorescence quenching. EDTA and sodium borohydride were added respectively as the "masking" reagents, in which EDTA complexed with Cu²⁺, and borohydride reduced Hg²⁺ into Hg⁰. Both these reactions inhibited the ions' interaction with the nanocluster and eliminated related quenching effect, thus detection of the other ion was achieved. Good selectivity of the nanocluster over these

Polyelectrolyte multilayered nanofilms as a novel approach for the protection of hydrogen storage materials.

This work describes the encapsulation of hydrogen storage materials from organic solvents. Due to complex formation the shell provides stability and selective permeability. Specifically, sodium borohydride particles were encapsulated within polymer films by the layer-by-layer self-assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (polyethyleneimine and poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-acrylic acid)). The polymer nanofilm fabrication was performed using dichloromethane as a working media. IR spectroscopy was applied to investigate the chemical interaction between the polyelectrolytes. The multi

Influence of Metal Deposition and Activation Method on the Structure and Performance of Carbon Nanotube Supported Palladium Catalysts.

The effects of the metal deposition and activation methods on metal particle size and distribution were investigated for carbon nanotube supported Pd catalysts. The Pd precursor was loaded by incipient wetness impregnation, ion adsorption, and deposition precipitation and was activated by thermal treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere or in the liquid phase by reduction by formaldehyde or sodium borohydride. Regardless of the metal precursor loading method, activation under a N2 atmosphere at 500 °C led to homogeneously distributed 4 nm Pd particles. Liquid-phase reduction by sodium borohydride

Titanium and native defects in LiBH(4) and NaAlH(4).

We report combined density functional studies and thermodynamic considerations on Ti-related and native defects in lithium borohydride and sodium alanate. Ti atoms introduced into the bulk of LiBH(4) are thermodynamically unfavorable for all their oxidation states, while high oxidation states of Ti(n+) cations may become thermodynamically stable in the bulk of NaAlH(4) at certain thermodynamic conditions. Neutral hydrogen vacancies and interstitials or cation vacancies are less stable than their charged counterparts in both compounds. In sodium alanate, the formation of native defects leads to

Computational Investigation of the Chemical Bond between An(III) Ions and Soft-Donor Ligands.

The chemical bonding of actinide ions with arene and borohydride ligands is explored via quantum chemical methods to understand how the transuranium elements interact with soft-donor ligands. Specifically, the [An(C6Me6)(BH4)3] complexes (An = U, Np, and Pu) and their reduced congeners are studied. Density functional theory (DFT) shows that the metal-ligand interactions in the neutral complexes are governed by electrostatic interactions. Both DFT and complete active space (CASSCF) results show that as one moves from U to Pu, the 5f-orbitals are stabilized leading to a poorer energy match with

Autofluorescence Quenching in Decellularized Plant Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering.

PURPOSE: Autofluorescence in plant-derived scaffolds interferes with fluorescence imaging by overlapping with commonly used fluorophores such as Hoechst and FITC. This limits the ability to visualize cell behavior and scaffold integration in tissue engineering applications. This study evaluated whether copper sulfate, ammonium chloride, or sodium borohydride can reduce autofluorescence in decellularized plant scaffolds without compromising mechanical integrity or cell viability. METHODS: The effectiveness of the three quenching agents was evaluated in decellularized leatherleaf viburnum, spin

Method for Screening Sodium Cyanoborohydride for Free Cyanide Content and Its Impact on Bioconjugation Chemistry.

Sodium cyanoborohydride (CBH) is commonly used as a mild reducing agent in the reductive amination of aldehydes and free amines. Within the pharmaceutical industry, this reaction is employed in the bioconjugation of proteins and peptides. Free cyanide species such as HCN and NaCN are known residual impurities in CBH that can contribute to the formation of undesired side products including cyanoamines and cyanohydrins. In commercial processes, the potential for bound cyanated species requires an analytical control strategy to monitor and mitigate any risk to human health. Given these concerns,

Neutral core oligosaccharides of bovine submaxillary mucin--use of lead tetraacetate in the cold for establishing branch positions.

Oligosaccharide alditols were released from bovine submaxillary mucin by alkaline borohydride treatment. The fractions containing smaller neutral oligosaccharides were separated by HPLC, to give, in the mono-, di- and trisaccharide-alditol sizes, 19 different structures, in addition to three fucosylated tetrasaccharide alditols. Molecules were identified by NMR spectroscopy, electrospray-mass-spectrometry-mass-spectrometry, permethylation analyses, and highly selective Pb(OAc)4 oxidation at -30 degrees C, followed by borohydride reduction. Pb(OAc)4 oxidation was found to be generally applicabl

Identification of an O-glycosidic mannose-linked sialylated tetrasaccharide and keratan sulfate oligosaccharides in the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan of brain.

The chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan of rat brain was digested with Pronase, and after removal of glycosaminoglycans, the resulting glycopeptides were treated with alkaline borohydride to release O-glycosidically linked oligosaccharides. These were fractionated by ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration, and preparative thin layer chromatography, and their structural properties were studied by specific enzymatic degradations, methylation analysis, and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of disaccharides as their trimethylsilylated and permethylated derivatives. Reusable NiCo/Cu Catalysts for Sustainable Hydrogen Generation.

The generation of high-purity hydrogen via chemical reaction from hydrogen-rich materials is one of the ways in the alternative energy industry. In this approach, the utilization of catalytic materials that possess the capacity to initiate the decomposition of the starting material and the subsequent release of hydrogen is of paramount importance. In this study, nickel/cobalt-plated copper catalysts (NiCo/Cu) are presented, comprising from 4 to 90 wt.% of cobalt as catalytic materials for hydrogen generation via sodium borohydride (NaBH4) hydrolysis reaction. The NiCo/Cu catalysts were synthes

Light-Driven Reductive Cleavage of Sulfonamides Promoted by Thiourea Organophotosensitizers.

We have developed a practical method to perform the reductive photocleavage of sulfonamides using thioureas as organophotocatalysts. This transformation, which tolerates a variety of substrates, occurs under mild reaction conditions in the presence of tetrabutylammonium borohydride as a reducing agent. Experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigations complete the study, shedding light on the nature of the active species involved in the photocatalytic process.
