Nighttime bracing with the Providence brace in adolescent girls with idiopathic scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study was conducted of 102 consecutive female patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Those patients with … has been a problem. Since the introduction of the Milwaukee brace, alternatives such as low-profile braces, reduced wearing schedules, and nighttime only bracing have been tried. However, many factors influence the success or failure besides compliance. These include in-brace correction, brace design, and the orthotist's skills. This is the first report …

Comparison of Anterior Ankle Translation With and Without Ankle Braces.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains are a common musculoskeletal injury. Ankle braces are frequently used to prevent ankle injuries. AIM: The purpose of this study was to examine the anterior translation of the talocrural joint of 2 ankle braces relative to a control. METHODS: Ankle mobility was assessed with the Mobil-Aider arthrometer in 3 conditions: TayCo ankle brace, Aircast ankle brace, and control. Three measures were recorded for each condition. RESULTS: Thirty participants (9 male and 21 female patients) participated. Friedman's analysis of variance found significant between-group di…

Thermal behavior of cylindrical buckling restrained braces at elevated temperatures.

The primary focus of this investigation was to analyze sequentially coupled nonlinear thermal stress, using a three-dimensional model. It was meant to shed light on the behavior of Buckling Restraint Brace (BRB) elements with circular cross section, at elevated temperature. Such bracing systems were comprised of a cylindrical steel core encased in a strong concrete-filled steel hollow casing. A debonding agent was rubbed on the core's surface to avoid shear stress transition to the restraining system. The numerical model was verified by the analytical solutions developed by the other researche

Biomechanical evaluation of braces used for the treatment of epicondylitis.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of different types of braces that are used in the treatment of patients with epicondylitis radialis. Vibration and acceleration of the forearm and the elbow were measured with sensors taped to defined anatomic points on the skin surface. The impact-induced vibration of the racket-arm system was analyzed while the subjects were playing tennis. Different designed brace systems were investigated with respect to acceleration amplitudes and acceleration integrals. Clasp-based brace systems showed a slight reduction of acceleratio…

Regarding the controversy of lumbosacral supports and braces - an update.

Many health care practitioners believe lumbosacral supports and braces can be used effectively in treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders of the lumbar spine.Ninety-nine percent of 3,410 orthopedic surgeons surveyed in the United States reported prescribing spinal orthoses.1 While there is no hard scientific evidence of the clinical effectiveness of lumbosacral supports and braces as a group, there are retrospective studies that have documented acceptance by patients and improvement of symptoms in from 30% to 80% of the cases.2-4The lower lumbar region is of particular interest b…

Comparative Analysis of Braces and Aligners: Long-Term Orthodontic Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term results of orthodontic treatment with traditional braces and Invisalign, with a particular emphasis on treatment length, patient satisfaction, correction of malocclusion, and long-term stability. METHODS: Between 2020 and 2022, individuals who had orthodontic treatment at a tertiary care center had their data analysed. Patients with mild to severe malocclusions treated with conventional braces or Invisalign between the ages of 12 and 18 met the inclusion criteria. Assessments were done on results, length of trea…

Prescribing braces after forearm fractures does not decrease refracture rate.

Refracture is one of the most common complications of pediatric forearm fractures. One way to decrease this risk is to extend immobilization with a brace after the cast has been removed to allow for a range of motion exercises. The purpose of this study was to examine whether prescribing a brace after casting was discontinued decreased the risk of refracture. A retrospective, cohort study was performed at one level I trauma center. Girls under 10 years and boys under 12 years who sustained a forearm fracture from January 2013 to December 2018 were included. Patients with open fractures, fractu

Short-term outcome of double-shelled braces in neuromuscular scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis in patients with neuromuscular disease is a common issue and leads to secondary impairment. It is thus important to help such patients to regain and retain best possible stability to improve their quality of life. One option is the double-shelled brace (DSB). The aim of this study was to provide information on the degree of correction when using a DSB on patients with neuromuscular scoliosis. METHODS: We included patients with neuromuscular scoliosis treated with double-shelled braces in this retrospective study. Radiographs of the full spine were taken with and withou…

A quantitative method for measuring forces applied by nail braces.

BACKGROUND: Nail bracing is a conservative method used for ingrown nails; however, lack of objective measurements limits its use for various nails. METHODS: Double-string nail braces with extra metal springs were applied to 12 patients with 21 chronic, thick, and overcurved ingrown nails. Force was measured with a force gauge meter. Treatment was stopped once patients stood on their tiptoes and walked in shoes pain free without braces. A force gauge meter was also used on a model nail to show the forces applied by various nail braces and to compare their pulling forces. RESULTS: After 6 to 1…

Providence Bracing: Predicting the Progression to Surgery in Patients With Braced Idiopathic Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a common spinal abnormality, in which orthotic management can reduce progression to surgery. However, predictors of bracing success are still not fully understood. We studied a large patient population treated with the nighttime Providence orthosis, utilizing multivariable logistic regression to assess results and predict future spine surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with IS meeting Scoliosis Research Society inclusion and assessment criteria presenting from April 1994 to June 2020 at a single institution and treated with a Provid

Advanced Functional Bracing in Lower Extremity Trauma: Bracing to Improve Function.

There are many bracing options for patients with functional limitations of the lower extremity following trauma. The first question that the provider must ask when evaluating a patient with a foot and ankle functional limitation because of weakness or pain is, "what are the patient's expectations?" One option for the patient who desires to return to a higher level of function is a novel, custom dynamic orthosis (CDO) that, when coupled with an advanced rehabilitation program, has improved outcomes in patients following lower extremity trauma who have plateaued after traditional rehabilitation

Brace technology thematic series: the progressive action short brace (PASB).

BACKGROUND: The Progressive Action Short Brace (PASB) is a custom-made thoraco-lumbar-sacral orthosis (TLSO), devised in 1976 by Dr. Lorenzo Aulisa (Institute of Orthopedics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy). The PASB was designed to overcome the limits imposed by the trunk anatomy. Indeed, the particular geometry of the brace is able to generate internal forces that modify the elastic reaction of the spine. The PASB is indicated for the conservative treatment of lumbar and thoraco-lumbar scoliosis. The aim of this article is to explain the biomechanic principles of

Alternate In-Brace and Out-of-Brace Radiographs Are Recommended to Assess Brace Fitting and Curve Progression With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Follow-Up.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of missed curve progression in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing brace treatment with only in-brace follow-up radiographs, and to provide recommendations on when in-brace and out-of-brace should be obtained during follow-up. METHODS: 133 patients who had documented clinically significant curve progression during brace treatment or only when an out-of-brace radiograph were studied. Of these, 95 patients (71.4%) had curve progression noted on in-brace radiographs while 38 patients (28.
