OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to evaluate the various strategies currently in use to manage complex cysts and specifically address the need for intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of 4562 breast sonograms obtained during an 18-month period revealed 308 complex cysts in 252 women. Data collected from review of patient records included the patient's age and risk factors for breast cancer, aspiration or biopsy results (or both), follow-up imaging studies, and management recommendations.

The authors present the results of the diagnosis of 1405 cases of macroscopically evident breast cysts. Only 15% patients were younger than 40 and only 6% older than 55 years. All lesions were cytologically analysed. The results were classified as negative in 1120 (79.9%), suspect in 27 (1.9%) and positive in 6 (0.4%) of cases. A cytologic evaluation was made of 57 samples of fluid aspirated from cystic breast masses during the past 12 years in our hospital. The cytologic diagnosis of the cyst aspirates from 17 cancer cases was positive in 10 cases, suspicious in 2 and negative in 5. No false-positive cytologic diagnosis was made in 40 cases of benign cystic disease. A total of 149 breast cysts have been treated with primary aspiration. Findings were abnormal in 36 patients, 30 of whom underwent excision of the breast cyst with cancer being found in four. Careful examination of the breast after aspiration and follow-up are necessary, but, provided these precautions are observed, this type of treatment is simple, safe, and cheap besides often giving the patient relief at the first consultation.

Hydatid cyst (HC) is a lesion most commonly seen in the liver but can occur in many parts of the body. Breast involvement with HC is extremely rare. It can be isolated or accompanied by other organ involvements. In this report, we present a 46-year-old female with isolated HC located in the right breast. In the ultrasonography and MR images of the patient, the lesion was compatible with the HC, and homogenous dens lesion was shown on mammography. Diagnosis of HC was confirmed pathological. With this study, it was aimed to emphasize the radiological findings of isolated breast HC.

INTRODUCTION: The hydatid cyst of the breast is a rare pathology even in countries endemic to tuberculosis, however there remains a differential diagnosis evoked in front of any breast tumor. The clinic, mammography and ultrasound sometimes allow us to suspect the hydatid nature of the lesion. The definitive diagnosis remains histological and the treatment is always surgical. Digoxinlike materials (DLMs) are compounds found in animals that (1) cross-react with digoxin antibodies in specific radioimmunoassay procedures and (2) bind to Na+, K(+)-ATPase and inhibit its activity. DLMs may play a part in the regulation of electrolyte composition. The concentration of some immunoreactive peptide hormones in breast cyst fluid and serum from a series of patients with cystic breast disease were compared. Hydatid cyst in the breast is rare. We report a case of hydatid cyst in the breast in a 30-year-old Indian rural woman who presented with a lump in her left breast. MRI findings showed a cystic lesion in the breast. Histopathological examination showed features consistent with hydatid cyst with surrounding adherent pericystic breast tissue showing fibrocollagenisation and inflammatory response.
