Differential diagnosis of primary mesenchymal neoplasms of the breast.

OBJECTIVE: While the majority of breast neoplasms originate from epithelial cells, a rare part of them originate from mesenchymal breast tissue. This study aims to present the histomorphological and clinicoradiological features of our series of primary mesenchymal breast tumors and to discuss the features of these tumors in light of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases diagnosed as primary mesenchymal breast tumor in breast resection materials evaluated in our center between 2010 and 2023 were included. RESULTS: Of the 26 tumors included, 57.7% were diagnosed as benign and 42.3% as m…

[Study of c-erbB-2 expression in breast neoplasms].

A monoclonal antibody, NCL-CB11, raised against a synthetic peptide from the predicted sequence of the c-erbB-2 protein has been used immunohistochemically in a retrospective study of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded breast neoplasm biopsies. Sixty-five out of 115 infiltrating ductal carcinoma, eleven out of 15 intraductal carcinoma and seventeen out of 22 mammary Paget's diseases exhibited positive membrane staining, indicating amplification of the gene in these tumours. In infiltrating ductal carcinoma, there was a positive correlation between c-erbB-2 overexpression and axillary lymph node

Collagenase secretion by human breast neoplasms: a clinicopathologic investigation.

Evidence is presented that biopsy specimens from fibroadenomas, benign cystic lesions, and carcinomas of the human breast can produce in organ culture a neutral protease capable of digesting type I collagen. This enzyme activity, measured with the use of a radioactive release assay, was characterized as true vertebrate collagenase and occurred in both active and latent (requiring trypsin activation) forms. For the two types of benign breast lesion studied, collagenase secretion was significantly higher from fibroadenomas than from benign cystic tissue. Breast carcinomas, however, exhibited a w

Incidence rates and risk factors of benign breast neoplasms.

A case-control study of benign breast disease was conducted in Greater Boston in 1968-1969. Cases were nearly all women living in the reference population who were initially diagnosed as having fibrocystic disease, fibroadenoma or a "mixed" lesion during the study period. Controls were a random sample of the entire reference population. A mail questionnaire was completed for 678 cases and for 1807 controls. For fibrocystic disease the age-standardized incidence rate was 89.4 per 100,000 woman-years; for fibroadenoma it was 32.8. Fibrocystic disease rises in incidence to age 45 and then decline

Secondary neoplasms of the breast: a survey of the 20th Century.

BACKGROUND: A 90-year archive of surgical and postmortem material was reviewed to establish the incidence, presentation, and pathology of tumors secondary to the breast. METHODS: A search was performed on all cases contained within the files of the Pathology Department of the Royal London Hospital from 1907 to 1999. RESULTS: Sixty patients were identified with unequivocal, secondary, nonmammary neoplasms involving the breast. Hematologic tumors predominated, particularly among the more recent cases, with carcinoma less frequent overall but more numerous in the earlier part of the 20th centur

[The place of tumor markers in breast and gynecologic neoplasms].

The main tumor markers used in breast and gynaecological neoplasias are reviewed with their individual characteristics: carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), chorionic gonadotropin hormone (CGH), CA 125, CA 15.3 and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen (SCC). Their indications are specified according to the following cancer locations: breast, trophoblast, ovary, endometrium and cervix. The major clinical applications of the tumor markers routinely used are emphasized.

Clinical and cytologic features of papillary neoplasms of the breast.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cytologic features benign and malignant papillary breast lesions. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the clinical and cytologic features in 29 cases of intraductal papilloma and 26 cases of atypical papilloma or papillary carcinoma that had been diagnosed by histologic examination. The diameter of the mass was examined as a clinical feature. The cytologic features evaluated were as follows: bloody background, row of tall columnar cells, naked bipolar nuclei, hemosiderin-laden macrophages, myoepithelial cells, single scattered atypical cells, cellularity, nuclear atypia, nucle

[Controversies and advances in pathological diagnosis of breast neuroendocrine neoplasms].

Breast neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a rare pathological entity. Iterative revisions of successive editions of the WHO classification criteria have resulted in poor interobserver consistency in pathological diagnosis. This review systematically sorts out the evolutionary trajectory of the histological subtyping of such neoplasms, comprehensively analyzes diagnostic challenges at the histological, immunohistochemical and molecular levels, and elaborates on the hierarchical diagnostic framework and differential diagnostic criteria proposed by the latest WHO classification. It aims to provid

TRPS1 expression in neuroendocrine neoplasms of breast and other organs.

BACKGROUND: Primary neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms of the breast are rare. In the absence of in situ carcinoma, metastasis from other organs needs to be ruled out first. TRPS1 is a recently identified marker for breast origin. In the current study, we investigated TRPS1 expression in breast neuroendocrine neoplasms, including well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumour (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), and compared its expression with neuroendocrine neoplasms from other organs, such as lung, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 105 ca

Stromal neoplasms of the breast: a comparative flow cytometric study.

We analyzed 42 mammary spindle cell neoplasms (10 conventional fibroadenomas, 8 giant fibroadenomas, 17 cystosarcoma phyllodes, and 7 stromal sarcomas) by flow cytometry to assess the diagnostic and prognostic relevance of DNA content analysis in the pathologic evaluation of these lesions. Our data indicate that all fibroadenomas were diploid, cystosarcoma phyllodes displayed diploid and aneuploid DNA content irrespective of their histological categorization, and that stromal sarcomas were all aneuploid and clinically aggressive. Diploid cystosarcoma phyllodes were biologically indolent, where

Nuclear magnetic resonance studies on human breast dysplasias and neoplasms.

The ability of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to distinguish normal, diseased non-neoplastic, and neoplastic human breast tissues was investigated with T1 and T2 relaxation times used. The results indicated that NMR relaxation times could distinguish between the mean values of breast neoplasms and other diseased or normal tissues, with P values less than 0.001. Given a single sample, the probability of classifying it nonneoplastic or carcinoma could be accomplished with 85% confidence. For human breast tissues, the relaxation time T2 may be more discriminating that T1. These res…
