Tuberculosis in a bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cyst is one of the subtypes of congenital pulmonary cyst. Superadded infection, mostly bacterial is the commonest complication. Myobacterial infection is very rare. Here a case of tuberculosis in a bronchogenic cyst is reported because of its rarity.

Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts.

It was observed from the literature that the incidence, clinical and radiological features of the mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are different in adults than in infant population. Five cases of bronchogenic cysts in the middle mediastinum were studied over a period of 22 years. The cysts were carina-based in four cases and paratracheal in one case. The airway compression was observed in four cases due to cysts. In case one the cyst compressed the right pulmonary artery and vein as well as both mainstem bronchi causing their stenosis and bulged into the left atrial chamber.

Subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts.

Recent experience with a bronchogenic cyst occurring in a subcutaneous suprasternal location presents an additional entity to be considered in the differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, and correlates with the embryology of the developing tracheobronchial tree and sternum. A review of subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts shows 41 cases have been described in the English literature. Most were noted in the suprasternal location; all but one were first noted in infancy or childhood. There is a definite male predominance. Sinus tracts were present in four cases, but none extended into the che…

Presternal bronchogenic cysts.

A presternal subcutaneous cyst was removed from a 21-month-old male infant. This is a rare congenital lesion that typically appears as a pinpoint opening over the sternum that periodically drains small amounts of mucinous material. Histologically, these lesions have the features of their intrathoracic and mediastinal counterparts. Surgical excision is advocated because of the potential for infection.

[Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts].

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital malformations that are usually located in the mediastinum. Intrapulmonary location is rare. OBSERVATION: Four cases of intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts are reported in order to discuss their clinical and radiological presentation and their treatment. CONCLUSION: Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts diagnostic is often missed. This condition must however be known so as to foresee a resection in order to prevent a potential complication.

[Bronchogenic cyst of the tongue].

OBJECTIVES: Bronchogemc cyst is a rare aberration secondary to abnormal detachment of accessory lung buds from the primitive foregut. Through one case of bronchogenic cyst of the tongue, the authors made a review of this exceptional localisation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report one case of bronchogenic cyst of the tongue treated in the Ibn Sina Hospital. RESULTS: Our patient was a new born admitted in our formation for a voluminous cystic mass ot the tongue, responsible of difficulty for mouth occlusion and feeding The radiology I confirms the liquid nature of this mass. [Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts].

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly found in the mediastinum, but occasionally in lung parenchyma. We report 3 patients with intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts. A female presented back pain and a large cystic lesion with an air-fluid level on chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT). Another female was asymptomatic. A well-defined round mass with soft tissue intensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was found. A girl with repeated pulmonary infection and treatment in hospital for several years presented pulmonary infiltrate, air-fluid level, and oval linear shadow on X-rays. All patients underw…

[Bronchogenic cyst of the abdomen].

A bronchogenic cyst is a rare congenital anomaly that appears in the thorax, usually the lungs or the mediastinum, being much rarer in the retrosternal space, within the pericardium or the diaphragm, as well as in the neck, while localisation within the abdomen is extremely rare, with only about 30 reported cases. We present the case of a 68-year-old woman. During an investigation for an epigastric pain, a cystic lesion in the area of the body and tail of the pancreas was found. During open surgery, a cystic lesion, spanning 95 x 75 x 70 mm, above the body and tail of the pancreas was excised.…

Bronchogenic cyst of the shoulder.

An 8-month-old girl presented with a painless mass on her left shoulder that was noticed by her mother. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-defined subcutaneous cystic mass. The excised cyst was lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with occasional goblet cells and diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. She made a good recovery.

Bronchogenic cysts of the lung.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation of lung bronchogenic cysts (BC) is variable, from respiratory distress at birth to late appearance of symptoms. METHODS: This study of BC was based on a retrospective review of 41 cases: 21 infants and children and 20 adults, aged 1 day to 68 years. The diagnosis was antenatal in 4 cases. Three infants required mechanical ventilation, and 2 had their cyst drained before resection. Twenty infants and children and 17 adults underwent operations. RESULTS: Compression was the most important complication in infants and children. Cough, infection, and hemoptys…

Bronchogenic cysts in children.

Three children with symptomatic bronchogenic cysts are presented. Because of the variability in clinical presentation and the shortcomings of diagnostic procedures, bronchogenic cysts present a diagnostical problem. In view of the risk of serious complications an aggressive attitude towards all congenital cystic lung lesions is advised, even when they are asymptomatic. Surgical excision assures an excellent outcome in most cases, and is therefore the treatment of choice.

Bronchogenic cyst in the abdomen.

A bronchogenic cyst was found in the abdomen, in the retroperitoneum adjacent to the superior pancreatic body. The cyst was unilocular and contained about 100 ml pale yellow mucinous fluid. Microscopic examination revealed a pseudostratified columnar ciliated or cuboidal epithelium, seromucous glands, smooth muscle and cartilage, the distinctive features of bronchogenic cysts. This aberrant location of the cyst is explicable if abnormal buds of the tracheobronchial tree are pinched off and migrate into the abdomen in an early embryonic stage before the canal linking the abdominal with the thor…

Bronchogenic cysts in children.

Radiographic, surgical and pathological features of 33 paediatric patients with bronchogenic cysts are reviewed. These congenital lesions usually presented as spheroid mediastinal masses, near the carina or right paratracheal area, 2-3 cm in diameter with sharply delineated borders. Occasionally, the masses were lobulated or triangular in shape. Some cysts produced considerable airway distortion. All intrapulmonary cysts had connections, sometimes patent, with the trachea or main-stem bronchi. Thin-walled, completely aerated cysts became thick-walled with infection. A few air-filled and solid …

A cyst in the mist: bronchogenic mediastinal cysts.

Malformations of the bronchopulmonary foregut can lead to the formation of bronchogenic mediastinal cysts (BMC). BMC are rare congenital malformations usually found in the middle or posterior mediastinum. Only one-third of patients with BMC are symptomatic. We report a case of BMC in a 48-year-old female who was referred to the cardiothoracic surgeons due to an incidental finding of an anterior mediastinal mass on investigation for intermittent chest pain. The mass was treated surgically with a partial median sternotomy and mass excision. The patient's symptomology and mass histology were atyp

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst: MRI findings.

The authors describe a case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst in a 36-year-old female. She presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. An MRI scan revealed an 8 cm cystic lesion in the left upper retroperitoneum, with intermediate signal on T2-weighted images, high signal on T1 weighted images, and lack of internal enhancement after gadolinium. After laparoscopic excision, the histology findings were compatible with a bronchogenic cyst, which is extremely uncommon in the retroperitoneum.
