Cement-related burns.

Burns caused by prolonged contact of wet cement with skin are common in this country. Recent literature has highlighted other ways in which the use and manufacture of cement can lead to burn injuries, notably through explosion and contact with hot powder during manufacturing. These injuries are uncommon in this country and potentially very serious. Case studies are presented of two men injured in such a way in the same incident at a cement-manufacturing plant.

[Treatment of burns].

Bibliographic data on pathophysiology, therapeutic methods and mortality rate of burn disease are compared with own clinical experiences with a standardized therapy. Within a period of 18 month 35 patients with burn disease of special therapeutic problems were treated besides the overall number of patients in the operative intensive care unit of the Klinikum Steglitz. As special devices for patients with burns still do not exist provisional solutions had to be developed. It is referred to the close connexion between prognosis and mortality, on the one hand, and the age of the patients and the …

Epidemiology and management of respiratory burns in National Burns Centre, Singapore.

Respiratory burns constitute one of the two leading causes of burns mortality today, the other being infection. When cutaneous burns are complicated by co-existent respiratory or inhalational injury, the mortality remains high in most reported series. We began our prospective study of respiratory burns in 1982 as a multi-disciplinary team effort involving respiratory physicians, anaesthetists and our burns physicians. Between 1982 until February 1990, we treated a total of 240 patients with respiratory burns. During the same period, a total of 4041 patients were admitted to our Burns Centre at…

Psychological impact of burns on children treated in a severe burns unit.

The aims of this study were to analyse the types of incident which cause children's burns, to investigate emotional reactions and associated behaviour afterward and to ascertain post-admission sequelae. A total of 83 young people took part, aged 1-17 years, with a mean 12% (range 1.5-47%, S.D. 8.0) total body surface area burned. According to the results from the psychometric scales and questionnaire used, most burns were the result of domestic incidents. Older children scored higher in anxiety. The most common behavioural reactions observed (attachment, wish to go back home) reflect the parti…

Changing trends in bacteriology of burns in the burns unit, Delhi, India.

A retrospective study of bacterial isolates from the wounds of patients admitted to burns unit, was undertaken at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi, India, over a period of 5 years between July 1997 and April 2002. The study compared the results obtained with the previous 5 years data (June 1993-June 1997) from the same unit to determine the changing patterns and emerging trends of bacterial isolates and their antimicrobial susceptibilities. Pseudomonas species (31%) and Staphylococcus aureus (22%) were the most common pathogens followed by Klebsiella sp…

In this retrospective study, our aim was to identify the demographic features of pediatric burns presenting to our tertiary burn center catering to a large population from Istanbul. METHODS: The demographic data and information of 358 children with burns admitted to the GMM HTH burn center in Istanbul over a 7-year period (2001-2008) were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: 48 children with burn injuries were hospitalized in our burn center during the stu…

Electrical burns in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical burns account for up to 10% of burns admissions worldwide and are a potentially serious mechanism of injury. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology, presentation, management and complications of electrical burn injuries in adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all adult patients with electrical burns admitted to a tertiary burns centre. RESULTS: Eighty-two cases were identified. The mean age was 40 ± 2 years, 92.7% were males. The most common activities causing the injuries were work (39%) and do-it yourself activities (32%). A low vol…

Biocompatible Nanomaterials for Burns.

The skin being the largest organ, protects our body against harmful chemicals, pathogens, and physical agents. It constitutes primarily three layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layers. Injuries occurring due to burning remain localized to the skin or other organic tissues caused by flame, extreme heat, and close contact with chemicals or heated objects. Conventional treatments are available for the treatment of burns; however, they are expensive and might completely replace autologous tissue transfer. Nanotechnology-based approaches include organic nanoparticles, dendrimers, hydrogels…

Viral Infections in Burns.

Background: Viral infections after burns are less common than bacterial infections but usually occur in the more severely burned patients and have been associated with poor outcomes. Methods: Retrospective reviews and case series were examined to provide an overview of the management of viral infections in the burn patient. Results: The most common viral pathogens in these patients are the herpesviruses, which include herpes simplex, varicella zoster, cytomegalovirus, and human herpesvirus 6. Established viral infections that may complicate patient management include human immunodeficiency vir…

Diabetes and foot burns.

The incidence of diabetes and diabetic foot burns is increasing worldwide. In the present study, we surveyed frequency, morbidity and mortality of diabetic foot burn patients in our centre. The study was a cross-sectional survey with one-year follow up of our adult diabetic patients with lower extremity burns. Data on demographics, cause of burn, time from injury to hospital, TBSA, presence of neuropathy and diabetic foot, treatment plan for controlling blood sugar, smoking, infection, morbidity, co-morbid diseases, amputation and mortality were gathered from patient files. Statistical analysi…

Smartphone applications in burns.

OBJECTIVE: Since the introduction of applications (apps) for smartphones, the popularity of medical apps has been rising. The aim of this review was to demonstrate the current availability of apps related to burns on Google's Android and Apple's iOS store as well as to include a review of their developers, features, and costs. METHODS: A systematic online review of Google Play Store and Apple's App Store was performed by using the following search terms: "burn," "burns," "thermal," and the German word "Verbrennung." All apps that were programmed for use as medical apps for burns were included…

Special problems in burns.

Burn units provide a unique set of resources to patients with complex wounds, sepsis, and organ failures. This resource set is useful in a number of traumatic, infectious, and medical conditions as well. Further, many burn patients have sustained simultaneous non-burn trauma which will be managed in burn programs.
