OBJECTIVES: Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome with diverse etiologies, often presenting significant diagnostic and research challenges due to an extremely heterogenic symptomology and pathology. The differential for catatonia is further complicated by distinct, non-catatonic medical mimics of catatonia that present similarly. We propose a new delineation of medical mimics of catatonia and an approach to differential diagnosis that will better account for the complexities of catatonia and its mimics, ultimately leading to more clinically relevant outcomes.
METHODS: We obtained all case

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) undertake one of the most remarkable long-distance insect migrations, travelling thousands of kilometres to overwinter in the central trans-volcanic belt of Mexico. This study explored how monarch butterflies use essential fatty acids (EFA) and nonessential fatty acids (NFA) during overwintering. We collected 150 (male/female) butterflies from the Sierra Chincua wintering colony from the time of arrival (December 2022) to before departure (February 2023) and analysed their lipid content. Our findings revealed that although females have a higher mass fract…

Over the years, multiple studies have linked phenotypic plasticity to changes in gene expression and alternative splicing, but the role of epigenomic regulation, such as DNA methylation, in mediating plastic responses are still poorly understood. DNA methylation has been proposed as a promising regulatory mechanism because of its potential effects on transcriptional activity and pre-mRNA splicing, especially when present within gene bodies in insects. Here, we examined the role of DNA methylation in the developing wings of the Bicyclus anynana butterflies by testing its association with differ…

Generally, intra- and inter-sexual interactions have been considered qualitatively different processes. However, same-sex sexual behavior is widespread in the animal kingdom, challenging this assumption. Recently, a hypothesis was proposed that regards territorial contests of butterflies, where two males chase each other without apparent physical attack, as an initial phase of mating behavior. Building on this idea, we reviewed research on sexual and species recognition in butterflies to assess the extent to which they recognize the same sex and species. We found no evidence that butterflies r…

The evolution of visual systems is tightly linked to the diversification of visually guided behaviors. Using Heliconius butterflies, renowned for their rapid diversification of wing color patterns and corresponding visual mate preferences, we investigate the evolution of compound eye cell types across a complete speciation continuum. By integrating population genomics, chromatin conformation capture, and single-nucleus multi-omics, we uncover multi-modal mechanisms driving visual system evolution. Within a population polymorphic for mate preference, we identify senseless-2 as a glia-expressing…

Although best known for its extraordinary radiations of endemic plant species, the South African fynbos is home to a great diversity of phytophagous insects, including butterflies in the genus Chrysoritis (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). These butterflies are remarkably uniform morphologically; nevertheless, they comprise 43 currently accepted species and 68 currently valid taxonomic names. While many species have highly restricted, dot-like distributions, others are widespread. Here, we investigate the phylogenetic and biogeographic history underlying their diversification by analyzing molecular ma…

Understanding the chemical cues and gene expressions that mediate herbivore-host-plant and parasite-host interactions can elucidate the ecological costs and benefits accruing to different partners in tight-knit community modules, and may reveal unexpected complexities. We investigated the exploitation of sequential hosts by the phytophagous-predaceous butterfly Maculinea arion, whose larvae initially feed on Origanum vulgare flowerheads before switching to parasitize Myrmica ant colonies for their main period of growth. Gravid female butterflies were attracted to Origanum plants that emitted h…

While the Hofstadter butterfly is commonly observed in moiré superlattices, its thermal properties have not been investigated, particularly the quantized heat flow expected for Chern insulators. Here we report the first thermal transport measurements in a graphene and hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice under high magnetic field. We observe a quantized heat flow, uniquely set by the topological invariant, for all investigated states of the Hofstadter butterfly: quantum Hall states, Chern insulators, and even symmetry-broken Chern insulators emerging from strong electronic interactions.

Conservation biases have been documented since the first emergence of the concept of biodiversity in the 1980s,1,2,3 showing a systematic disproportion in the allocation of research and conservation efforts among taxa.4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 One factor underlying this disproportion, gaining prominence in recent literature, is species' perceived beauty, shaped by human visual preferences.12,13,14,15,16,17 Here, we integrate a large-scale survey of the perceived beauty of European butterflies yielding >21,000 survey completions from >100 countries into a time-explicit network linking species' beauty, …

PURPOSE: Butterfly glioblastoma (bGBM) is an aggressive variant of glioblastoma(GBM) characterized by invasion of both hemispheres through the corpus callosum. The cause of its poor prognosis remains unclear, whether due to complex anatomy orintrinsic molecular traits. In this cohort, we aim to identify the genetic features of bGBMand factors associated with its prognosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified GBM patients from our institutional database and groupedthem into non-butterfly glioblastoma (non-bGBM) and bGBM. Clinical features, genomic profiles, and survival outcomes were compared

The authors aim to present the butterfly effect, a concept based on the theory that small changes might have a powerful effect, as an example of the important connection between diet and acne. Western diet is currently a well-known environmental factor which, mainly via the overstimulation of mTORC1 (mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1), is responsible for the development and aggravation of acne and other age-related diseases of civilization. From the authors' point of view, "the butterfly effect" extrapolated to acne and diet depicts the importance of dietary interventions in acne so as t

OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the results of the graft success rate and hearing gain of children who underwent endoscopic inlay butterfly myringoplasty due to chronic otitis media.
METHODS: The study included 32 pediatric patients aged between 8 and 17, who had endoscopic inlay butterfly myringoplasty with the diagnosis of chronic otitis media between September 2012 and January 2015 in Elazig Training and Research Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Clinic and Firat University Otorhinolaryngology Clinic. All patients' demographics, perforation size, and hearing status were examined.

UNLABELLED: Extensor digitorum tendon (EDT) tear in the wrist is frequently associated with inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis, chondrocalcinosis) or distal radio-ulnar osteoarthritis. EDT protection and repair is often hampered by poor tissue trophicity and associated procedures. We describe an extensor retinaculum (ER) plasty, protecting and recentering the EDTs. The procedure consists in raising the ER on either side of Lister's tubercle so as to create a strap protecting and recentering the 4th, 5th and 6th compartment EDTs; the 2nd and 3rd compartment EDTs are left free on the lateral sid

Rashes can occur in any part of the body. But rash which appears on face has got both psychological and cosmetic effect on the patient. Rashes on face can sometimes be very challenging to physicians and dermatologists and those associated with oral manifestations pose a challenge to dentists. Butterfly rash is a red flat facial rash involving the malar region bilaterally and the bridge of the nose. The presence of a butterfly rash is generally a sign of lupus erythematosus (LE), but it can also include a plethora of conditions. The case presented here is of a female with butterfly rash along w

Monarch butterflies in eastern North America accumulate lipids during their fall migration to central Mexico, and use them as their energy source during a 5 month overwintering period. When and where along their migratory journey the butterflies accumulate these lipids has implications for the importance of fall nectar sources in North America. We analyzed the lipid content of 765 summer breeding and fall migrant monarch butterflies collected at 1 nectaring site in central Virginia over 4 years (1998-2001), and compared them with 16 additional published and unpublished datasets from other site…
