OBJECTIVE: Cricopharyngeal webs (CPW) are a frequent cause of solid food dysphagia. They are difficult to diagnose and are often missed on swallowing fluoroscopy. The prevalence of CPWs is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of CPWs in elderly cadavers.
METHODS: Direct laryngoscopy and cervical esophagoscopy were performed in 19 embalmed cadavers by independent two-clinician consensus. A technique for thoracoscopic dissection of the esophagus is described which gives a large and magnified view of the pleural cavity, the mediastinum, and the esophagus. This technique was developed on human cadavers which gives excellent technical resources for learning and practicing endoscopic surgical anatomy of the esophagus. It avoids the need to change the position of the patient to perform a total thoracoabdominal esophagectomy via a triple surgical approach.

PURPOSE: To quantify the number of cadavers used in physician assistant (PA) anatomy education and to ascertain the origins of those cadavers.

A possible new technique of endoscopic pharyngoplasty is described and has been developed in cadavers. The trans-nasal route is used for endoscopic visualisation of the velopharyngeal sphincter. Hynes pharyngoplasty is performed using both trans-oral and trans-nasal routes. This approach allows better visualisation and performance of the Hynes pharyngoplasty at the desired level, "high" in the nasopharynx, without splitting the soft palate.

Small children have often been reported to have poor outcome after kidney transplantation (KT). Recent reports from North America have shown that the use of living-related donors improves patient and graft survival. We report the experience in one centre of primary cadaveric KT using sequential immunosuppression in nine children aged 8-30 months and weighing 5.4-9.8 kg; donors were 0.7-12.3 years old. Repeat cadaver kidney transplantation using azathioprine immunosuppression carried a higher risk of graft loss than primary transplants. We analyzed the results of repeat cadaver kidney grafting with cyclosporine A immunosuppression.
