We report an 8-year-old boy who developed dystrophic calcinosis cutis that occurred following trauma. Multiple abrasions were observed in the inguinal folds after a soccer game. Subsequently, multiple papules with soft centers and white particles appeared in the same area. A biopsy specimen showed calcinosis cutis with transepidermal elimination of calcium. The causes of the underlying tissue damage associated with dystrophic calcinosis are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: Calcinosis cutis (CC) is disabling for SSc patients, and quantitative outcomes and treatments are needed. We performed computer-assisted mapping of CC lesions on CT exams and quantified CC during sodium thiosulphate (STS) treatment.
METHODS: In a pilot study, SSc-CC patients underwent CT imaging of a painful lesion followed by 6-12 month 25% STS, intradermal monthly injections or twice daily cream, treatment. Post-treatment CT exams were obtained, and three assessors used open-source software (BioImageSuite/BIS Web) to map and quantify CC volume, termed scleroderma calcinosis cuti…

The development of calcium salt deposits in the skin can occur in the presence or absence of membranous ossification and are categorized into osteoma cutis (i.e., cutaneous osteoma) and calcinosis cutis. For the former, distinction into primary or secondary osteoma cutis is mainly based on clinical and histopathological parameters, as primary osteoma cutis originates without any underlying intradermal inflammatory or neoplastic process, as opposed to a far greater number of secondary osteoma cutis that occur on the grounds of inflammation or tumors. Genetic disorders might predispose a person …

Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC) and subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN) are described as different entities under the heading of idiopathic calcinosis cutis. Although there are some clinical differences, they share many features. Whereas MICC lesions are located mostly on the extremities and rarely on the face, SCN manifests itself mostly on the face, rarely on the extremities. Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis almost always presents with multiple lesions, whereas SCN shows mainly solitary and rarely multiple lesions. Association with Down syndrome (DS) has been reported in …

A 42-year-old white woman presented with clinical and histologic manifestations of both calcinosis cutis and pseudoxanthoma elasticum: discrete milia-like calcifications at the anterior aspect of the neck, a funduscopic examination with classic eye findings, peripheral vascular disease, and a mottled appearance of the skin at the axillae, groin, and lateral aspects of the neck. A younger sibling had similar skin lesions and deteriorating visual acuity. The patient was normocalcemic and normophosphatemic. This case may represent the coincidental occurrence of two rare entities in the same perso…

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis is characterized by deposition of calcium in the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. This condition may be initially identified by the WOC nurse, and its management requires a team approach. Calcinosis cutis is a debilitating and painful condition; it is difficult to manage, and widely agreed-upon standards for treatment have not been established.
CASES: Two patients who presented with calcium deposits in the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue are discussed. The first was initially misdiagnosed as venous ulcerations; the second presented with a confirmed diagnoses…

Cutaneous calcinosis can be classified into four types: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic and iatrogenic. Dystrophic calcification constitutes the most frequent variant and is associated with a large number of illnesses, among which are included some collagen diseases such as CREST syndrome, scleroderma, dermatomyositis and lupus erythematosus. We present a case of dystrophic calcinosis cutis, affecting the fingertip of a woman with a 10-year history of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). She has been receiving diltiazem as a treatment for the last 15 months, resulting in the partial resolution …

We present the case of a woman of 72 years with high blood pressure evaluated in Surgery Outpatient Unit for overinfected and recurring pretibial cutaneous ulcers. In the radiographies of the extremity, calcifications were observed in soft parts and the biopsy showed calcified subepidermic nodules. Because of these findings, she was sent to Internal Medicine Consultations to complete the study. In the anamnesis, traumatism in the zone was ruled out, and was there consumption of calcium or phosphorous rich medicines; the physical exploration was normal, except for the lesions described previous
