Membrane preparations from mouse sperm heads and tails were used in a gamma 32P-ATP hydrolysis assay to investigate Ca(2+)-dependent ATPase activity. In membranes from sperm heads, but not tails, a Ca2(+)-dependent ATPase that was further stimulated by calmodulin was detected. The addition of partially purified mouse sperm decapacitation factor (DF) to head membrane preparations significantly stimulated Ca(2+)-ATPase activity, this effect being further increased in the presence of DF plus calmodulin; in contrast, no response was observed when the same treatment was applied to tail membranes. Solutions containing zero, 1.7, 3.4 and 5.0 mM calcium and isotopic 45Ca as tracer were perfused in vivo through the lumen of cecum and descending colon. Shoot elongation of arrowhead (Sagittaria pygmaea Miq.) tubers was stimulated in anaerobic conditions. The transfer of 203Pb and/or 47Ca across the intestinal epithelium of the chick was investigated, with emphasis given to the functional role of cholecalciferol (vitamin D-3). 203Pb, after introduction in the intestinal lumen, is rapidly accumulated by the intestinal tissue, and only a fraction of 203Pb is translocated parenterally (absorbed). Cholecalciferol did not significantly affect the accumulation of 203Pb by intestinal tissue but did accelerate 203Pb movement across the basal-lateral membrane. In contrast, cholecalciferol both decreased 47Ca tissue levels and increased 47Ca absorption.

BACKGROUND: Gestational primary hyperparathyroidism is associated with serious maternal and neonatal complications, which require prompt surgical treatment. Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy reduces pain, improves cosmesis and may achieve cure rates comparable to traditional open bilateral neck exploration. We report the clinical course of a woman with newly diagnosed gestational primary hyperparathyroidism and discuss the decision making behind the choice of video-assisted minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, amongst the other minimally invasive parathyroidectomy techniques available.
