West Nile virus (WNV) was first isolated in California during July 2003 from a pool of Culex tarsalis collected near El Centro, Imperial County. A retrospective chart review conducted at two teaching hospitals in Los Angeles County identified 28 patients with infection due to Echinococcus granulosus diagnosed by positive echinococcal serology and/or tissue biopsy between January 1981 and December 1990. INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is an infection of the central nervous system caused by the tapeworm Taenia solium. Despite documented increases of NCC in California, large-scale studies characterizing affected populations remain limited. The spectrum of NCC associated neuropsychiatric comorbidities has not been well defined in U.S. populations. Precipitin antibodies to California group arboviruses were studied by double agar gel immunodiffusion (ID) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CEP). Forty children with California encephalitis (CE), 12 patients with other forms of meningoencephalitis, and 120 residents of endemic CE areas were tested.
