In infants, the tip of a cannula is sometimes used as introducer during peripherally inserted central catheters placement. We report a rare complication of this procedure, characterized by intravascular migration of the cannula tip during peripheral insertion of a central venous catheter. Suppurative thrombophlebitis is a well recognised and potentially fatal complication of intravenous cannulation in burns patients. We report a case of an Afro-Caribbean patient with noninsulin-dependent diabetes who developed signs of systemic sepsis two weeks after a 14% total body surface area flame burn. Despite an initial paucity of clinical signs at the cannulation site, exploratory venotomy revealed frank suppuration within the long saphenous vein from the ankle to the groin. The charts of 340 patients who underwent an endometrial suction procedure using Karman's cannula and syringe were reviewed. The therapeutic uses of this instrument were for the treatment of chronic endometritis (18.6%), the evacuation of incomplete or missed abortion (14.6%) and hydatidiform mole (0.8%), and the retrieval of the missing tail of an intrauterine contraceptive device (1.2%).
