This paper presents a miniaturized design of a 2× zoom lens for application to a one-megapixel image sensor in a capsule endoscope. The zoom lens is composed of four lenses, including three plastic aspheric lenses and one glass spherical lens, and adopts a three-lens group design. This capsule endoscope is mainly for observation of the small intestine, which has a radius of about 12.5 mm. The height of the object is thus set to 12.5 mm. In large bowel investigations using endoscopic capsules and upon detection of significant findings, physicians require the location of those findings for a follow-up therapeutic colonoscopy. To cater to this need, we propose a model based on tracking feature points in consecutive frames of videos retrieved from colon capsule endoscopy investigations. Aspiration into the respiratory tract is a rare complication of capsule endoscopy. We describe a patient whose small bowel capsule endoscopy was complicated by aspiration into the proximal trachea without apparent respiratory symptoms. Spontaneous expulsion of the capsule device through coughing occurred approximately 10 hours later.

AdvanCE is a useful device in patients who cannot swallow capsule endoscopes, or when these remain in the patient's stomach without passing into the duodenum. A net or snare may be used to guide the capsule endoscope into the duodenum when the capsule endoscope becomes stuck in the stomach, but it may be difficult to guide the capsule into the duodenum in some cases, particularly in those of waterfall stomach. A patient aged 26 was investigated for recurrent severe gastrointestinal bleeding. Over a 4-year period, he was transfused more than 400 units of blood.
