Transformation of Chlorofluorocarbons Investigated via Stable Carbon Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis.

Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) is a valuable tool in contaminant remediation studies. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are ozone-depleting substances previously thought to be persistent in groundwater under most geochemical conditions but more recently have been found to (bio)transform in some laboratory experiments. To date, limited applications of CSIA to CFCs have been undertaken. Here, biotransformation-associated carbon isotope enrichment factors, εC,bulk for CFC-113 (εC,bulk = -8.5 ± 0.4‰) and CFC-11 (εC,bulk = -14.5 ± 1.9‰), were determined. δ13C signatures of pure-phase CFCs and h

Local paleoenvironmental controls on the carbon-isotope record defining the Bitter Springs Anomaly.

Large magnitude (>10‰) carbon-isotope (δ13 C) excursions recorded in carbonate-bearing sediments are increasingly used to monitor environmental change and constrain the chronology of the critical interval in the Neoproterozoic stratigraphic record that is timed with the first appearance and radiation of metazoan life. The ~10‰ Bitter Springs Anomaly preserved in Tonian-aged (1000-720 Ma) carbonate rocks in the Amadeus Basin of central Australia has been offered as one of the best preserved examples of a primary marine δ13 C excursion because it is regionally reproducible and δ13 C values covar

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of sodium and potassium cyanide as a forensic signature.

Sodium and potassium cyanide are highly toxic, produced in large amounts by the chemical industry, and linked to numerous high-profile crimes. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified cyanide as one of the most probable agents to be used in a chemical terrorism event. We investigated whether stable C and N isotopic content of sodium and potassium cyanide could serve as a forensic signature for sample matching, using a collection of 65 cyanide samples. Upon analysis, a few of the cyanide samples displayed nonhomogeneous isotopic content associated with degradation to a

Potential for identifying abiotic chloroalkane degradation mechanisms using carbon isotopic fractionation.

Degradation of 1,1- and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA, 1,2-DCA) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) on Zn0 was investigated using compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) to measure isotopic fractionation factors for chloroalkane degradation by hydrogenolysis, by alpha-elimination, and by beta-elimination. Significant differences in enrichment factors (epsilon) and associated apparent kinetic isotope effects (AKIE) were measured for these different reaction pathways, suggesting that carbon isotope fractionation by beta-elimination is substantially larger than fractionation by hydrogenolysis or by a

Distinguishing abiotic and biotic transformation of tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene by stable carbon isotope fractionation.

Significant carbon isotope fractionation was observed during FeS-mediated reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE). Bulk enrichment factors (E(bulk)) for PCE were -30.2 +/- 4.3 per thousand (pH 7), -29.54 +/- 0.83 per thousand (pH 8), and -24.6 +/- 1.1 per thousand (pH 9). For TCE, E(bulk) values were -33.4 +/- 1.5 per thousand (pH 8) and -27.9 +/- 1.3 per thousand (pH 9). A smaller magnitude of carbon isotope fractionation resulted from microbial reductive dechlorination by two isolated pure cultures (Desulfuromonas michiganensis strain BB1 (BB1) and S

Variability in microbial carbon isotope fractionation of tetra- and trichloroethene upon reductive dechlorination.

The variability of stable carbon isotope fractionation upon reductive dechlorination of tetra- and trichloroethene by several microbial strains was investigated to examine the uncertainties related to the in situ application of compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of chlorinated ethenes. Carbon isotope fractionation was investigated with a set of microorganisms representative for the currently known diversity of dehalorespirers: Dehalococcoides ethenogenes strain 195, Desulfitobacterium sp. strain Viet1, Desulfuromonas michiganensis and Geobacter lovleyi sp. strain SZ and compared to the

Use of carbon stable isotope to investigate chloromethane formation in the electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene.

Carbon stable isotope trichloroethylene ((13)C TCE) was used to investigate the formation of chloromethane (CM) during the electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) at a granular-graphite packed cathode. A method was developed to use a conventional GC/MS to analyze and quantify regular and (13)C TCE and their dechlorination products. The concentration of a (13)C compound can be calculated, based on the concentration of its regular counterpart, from the response ratio of two fragments of different mass per charge values from the compounds in a sample and two characteristic MS spect

A method for carbon stable isotope analysis of methyl halides and chlorofluorocarbons at pptv concentrations.

A pre-concentration system has been validated for use with a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC/MS/IRMS) to determine ambient air (13)C/(12)C ratios for methyl halides (MeCl and MeBr) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The isotopic composition of specific compounds can provide useful information on their atmospheric budgets and biogeochemistry that cannot be ascertained from abundance measurements alone. Although pre-concentration systems have been previously used with a GC/MS/IRMS for atmospheric trace gas analysis, this is the first study also to report sys

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of human dietary change in the Georgia Bight.

Measurement of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (delta 13C and delta 15N) in samples of human bone collagen (n = 93) from a temporal series of four prehistoric (early preagricultural, late preagricultural, early agricultural, late agricultural) and two historic (early contact, late contact) periods from the Georgia Bight, a continental embayment on the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast, reveals a general temporal trend for less negative delta 13C values and less positive delta 15N values. This trend reflects a concomitant decrease in emphasis on marine resources and increased reliance

Carbon and Sulfur Isotopes of Microfossils and Pyrites from Neoarchean Cherts: Microbial Diversity in an Ancient Deep-Marine Environment.

The 2.52 Ga Gamohaan Formation in South Africa offers critical insights into microbial ecosystems that inhabited deep-marine environments during the late Archean. Large spheroidal microfossils and pyrite grains preserved in finely laminated black cherts reveal evidence of diverse metabolic processes and a complex deep-marine sulfur cycle. This study combines optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to characterize fossil kerogen and sedimentary pyrites, along with secondary ion mass spectrometry to analyze their in situ carbon (δ13C) and sulfur (δ34S) isotope co

Fractionation of stable carbon isotopes during UV degradation of toluene: implications for the quantitative characterization of volatile organic compounds.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major atmospheric pollutants commonly derived from the fossil fuel combustion. The concentration of VOCs in the atmosphere and its dynamics have widely been used to evaluate their source, formation processes, residence time, and photochemical reactions involved in the atmosphere. However, little is known about the effect of UV degradation of VOCs during their transport from the source to the study area, which always reduces accuracy in the understanding of VOCs' characteristics in the atmosphere. In the present study, we investigated the fractionation of c

Dehalogenation of α-hexachlorocyclohexane by iron sulfide nanoparticles: Study of reaction mechanism with stable carbon isotopes and pH variations.

The biodegradation of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) is known to be accompanied by isotope fractionation of carbon (13C/12C), but no systematic studies were performed on abiotic degradation of HCH isomers by iron (II) minerals. In this study, we explored the carbon isotope fractionation of α-HCH during dechlorination by FeS nanoparticles at different pH values. The results of three different experiments showed that the apparent rate constants during dehalogenation of α-HCH by FeS increased with pH. The lowest apparent rate constant value α-HCH during dehalogenation by FeS was 0.009 d-1 at pH va

Effects of Pretreatment on the Isotopic Composition of Structural Carbonate in Ray-Finned Fish Teeth.

RATIONALE: The carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ18O) of carbonate contained in fish tooth dentin have the potential to offer insights into environmental and ecological conditions, making them promising targets for analysis in fossil specimens. However, the tooth dentin of extant specimens contains significant amounts of organic matter that can decompose or produce gases that interfere with isotope measurements. Therefore, a well-developed pretreatment protocol for removing organic components prior to isotopic analysis is essential. METHODS: In this study, we developed pretre

Soil phosphorus drives subcontinental patterns of carbon isotope discrimination across Australia.

Several transects have been established to study the sensitivity of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) in woody plants to mean annual precipitation (MAP) across Australia. These have shown a surprising divergence in Δ13C-MAP sensitivity among subcontinental regions. We analysed previously reported data alongside new measurements from a transect in northeastern Queensland to explore potential drivers of regional-scale Δ13C-MAP sensitivity. Multiple lines of evidence indicated this sensitivity is related to soil phosphorus. In phosphorus-poor regions, Δ13C decreased less with decreasing MAP th

Carbon Isotope Fractionation of Dissolved Organic Matter Due to •OH-Based Oxidation.

•OH-based oxidation plays a crucial role in dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation and carbon flux, whereas quantifying the contribution of this pathway remains challenging. Here we combined the concentration with the carbon isotope analysis of DOM and its generated CO2 to quantify the contribution of •OH-based oxidation. Results showed that the 13C enrichment factors (ε values) were -8.1‰ to -8.9‰ for benzene ring oxidation in aromatic compounds, -4.2‰ to -28.9‰ for lower-molecular-weight organic acids, and -13.0‰ for DOM from sediment. The fractionation of sediment DOM reflects the av

Oxygen Isotope Exchange between Carbon Dioxide and Iron Oxides on Mars' Surface.

An investigation of the fundamental processes leading to the incorporation of 18O isotopes in carbon dioxide and in iron oxides is critical to understanding the atmospheric evolution and geochemistry of Mars. Whereas signatures of 18O have been observed by the Phoenix Lander and the sample analysis at Mars for carbon dioxide, the underlying isotopic exchange pathways with minerals of the crust of Mars are still elusive. Here, we reveal that reactions of gaseous 18O-carbon dioxide over goethite (FeO(OH)) and hematite (Fe2O3) lead to an 18O transfer from the atmosphere that enriches the 18O cont

Mechanistic Dichotomy in Bacterial Trichloroethene Dechlorination Revealed by Carbon and Chlorine Isotope Effects.

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) are significant groundwater contaminants. Microbial reductive dehalogenation at contaminated sites can produce nontoxic ethene but often stops at toxic cis-1,2-dichloroethene ( cis-DCE) or vinyl chloride (VC). The magnitude of carbon relative to chlorine isotope effects (as expressed by ΛC/Cl, the slope of δ13C versus δ37Cl regressions) was recently recognized to reveal different reduction mechanisms with vitamin B12 as a model reactant for reductive dehalogenase activity. Large ΛC/Cl values for cis-DCE reflected cob(I)alamin addition followed

Variability in the carbon isotope fractionation of trichloroethene on its reductive dechlorination by vitamin B12.

Stable carbon isotope fractionation through the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene by vitamin B12 was determined to assess the possibility of using stable carbon isotope analysis to determine the efficacy of remediation of trichloroethylene using vitamin B12. We elucidated the effects of environmental conditions, including the pH, reaction temperature, and vitamin B12 concentration, on the carbon isotope enrichment factor (ε). The ε values were relatively insensitive to the reaction temperature and vitamin B12 concentration, ranging from -15.7‰ to -16.2‰, with a mean of -15.9 ± 0.2‰
