OBJECTIVES: Carcinosarcomas (CSs) are rare gynecological neoplasms seen in elderly females. These are composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components, which appear as adenocarcinoma and high-grade sarcoma. Effusions are encountered uncommonly in CS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study focuses on the cytomorphology of 10 cases of metastatic CS in effusions. In 6 years, there were 10 (0.45%) cases of metastatic CS in effusion samples out of 2240 malignant effusion samples. The samples were processed by SurePath™ and centrifuge technique. Both May-Grünwald-Giemsa and Papanicolaou stained

Carcinosarcoma is a rare tumor with both malignant epithelium and interstitial components. Tumor entities have been described in many epithelial organs such as the lung, uterus, ovary, prostate and so on. Hypopharyngeal carcinosarcoma is extremely rare. Now we report a case of hypopharyngeal carcinosarcoma in our department in August of 2016 as follows.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathological characteristics, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hypopharyngeal carcinosarcoma.
METHOD: Clinical data of one case with hypopharyngeal carcinosarcoma proved by pathology were analyzed retrospectively. The related literatures were reviewed.
RESULT: The masses were surgically removed, and the postoperative diagnosis was confirmed to be carcinosarcoma by histopathological examination. After radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the patient recovered well postoperatively without recurrence during 18-month follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Carcinosarcoma of the hy

Carcinosarcoma of the bladder is a very unusual neoplasm that arises more frequently in males with a greater incidence in the seventh decade of life. There are no patognomonic clinical findings or symptoms to address its presence. Symptoms, as for other bladder cancers, are fundamentally represented by haematuria and dysuria. It has a very aggressive clinical behaviour and it is histologically characterized by a malignant epithelial component associated with a sarcoma-like (sarcomatoid) component variably represented.

Carcinosarcomas are tumors comprising part adenocarcinoma and part sarcoma; the presence of carcinosarcoma in the head-and-neck region is very rare. These tumors are typically highly aggressive (G3) and arise most frequently from the salivary gland. Here, we present a case report on a brain metastasis as the primary manifestation of a carcinosarcoma. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a tumor of the pineal region with infiltration of the brainstem and the corpus. The staging following the histopathological diagnosis revealed the origin of the tumor in the left parotid gland. We present an overv

A 64-year-old Japanese woman without a history of viral hepatitis was admitted for investigation of a huge liver mass. The tumor, measuring 14 × 12 × 22 cm, had invaded the diaphragm, right lung, and inferior vena cava. Serum examinations demonstrated high levels of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), and the Child-Pugh score was A. She underwent right lobectomy of the liver and partial resection of the right diaphragm, right lung, and inferior vena cava. Radio- and chemotherapy were also given, but she died of recurrence 3 months after surgery. Microscopically, the tumor exhibited intermingle

Nasopharnygeal carcinoma is known to be the commonest tumour of the nasopharynx. However, the incidence of nasopharngeal carcinosarcoma is extremely rare. Carcinosarcoma has been reported to be aggressive in nature and therefore early diagnosis and prompt treatment is important. We report a young lady who was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinosarcoma in our centre. She presented with only 2 weeks history of nose block and was noted to have a mass occupying the nasopharynx with neck metastasis. She underwent panendoscope and biopsy with radical radiotherapy.

Carcinosarcoma is a well-recognized tumor even if it is an uncommon entity. Neoplasms usually occur in the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, larynx and skin, and have been rarely documented in the female genital tract. This case reports a patient with a diagnosis of vulvar carcinosarcoma that has been treated with radical vulvectomy and a left inguinal lymphadenectomy but she died two months later of progressive disease. Because of the extreme rarity and severe prognosis of the tumor, we believe that this is a useful addition to the literature and might serves as a reminder to physicians that a

This report describes a case of carcinosarcoma of the duodenum. Carcinosarcoma of the duodenum is a very rare tumor. A 72-year-old man was referred to the hospital because of appetite loss. Endoscopy demonstrated an irregularly depressed lesion (type 3) in the descending portion of the duodenum opposite to the ampulla of Vater. Computed tomography showed a thickened duodenal wall and swelling of the abdominal para-aortic lymph nodes. A biopsy specimen revealed a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. A diagnosis of duodenal carcinoma was made (cT3, cN1, cM1, cStage IV according to the TNM classif

A 63-year-old Japanese man with a 1-month history of dyschezia and dysuria was referred to our hospital. Transrectal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a mass involving the prostate, measuring about 6.5 cm. The serum prostate specific antigen was 20.3 ng/ml. By the transperineal needle biopsy, it was suspected to be fibrosarcoma. Total pelvic exenteration was performed. Histopathological examination of the tumor revealed carcinosarcoma of the prostate. One month after the operation local recurrence was manifested by perineal pain. The recurrent tumor grew rapidly with

The patient was a 47-year-old man who had visited a nearby physician with a chief complaint of bloody sputum. This patient underwent partial resection of the left upper lobe including a tumor adjacent to a huge bulla revealed by a plain chest radiograph. The resected tumor was composed of adenocarcinomatous and sarcomatous components, including partially-differentiated chondrosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. The diagnosis was therefore true pulmonary carcinosarcoma. The sarcoma component recurred in the remaining part of the left lung. This recurrent lesion was surgically unresectable, but was re

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare malignant neoplasm, predominantly affecting men in their seventh decade of life. While presenting symptoms and anatomic location of squamous cell and carcinosarcoma of the esophagus are similar, the latter often presents as a large intraluminal polypoid mass on barium esophagram. The more favorable prognosis associated with carcinosarcoma versus other esophageal neoplasms has been attributed to early onset of symptoms, resulting in prompt diagnosis, and a lower propensity for tumor invasion. We report the case of an elderly woman presenting with dyspha

We report one case of carcinosarcoma of the prostate in a patient of 43 years old. The clinical symptomatology was dominated by pollakiurie, dysuria digestive disorders, oedema of the lower limbs and the alteration of the general status. Digital rectal examination showed a big prostate, hard and irregular. The rate of PSA increased. Echography revealed a pelvic echogenic mass corresponding to a bulky prostate. CT scan of the abdomen and the pelvis showed a tissular, heterogeneous mass of 11 cm occupying the vesicoprostatic space and invading the basis of the bladder and the adjacent muscles (m

We report a case of oesophageal carcinosarcoma with prominent rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. Immunohistochemically, the rhabdomyblasts were mainly reactive to vimentin, cytokeratin, desmin, muscle-specific actin, myosin, and myoglobin, and were surrounded by laminin and type IV collagen-positive basement membranes. The tumour had dual differentiation, carcinomatous and sarcomatous, but also showed evident features of transition between the two components; suggesting a common origin. An epithelial-mesenchymal conversion could be the pathogenetic mechanism involved in the histogenesis of this

Carcinosarcoma of the uterus is an uncommon tumor composed of epithelial and mesenchymal components. The incidence is higher in blacks and increases with age. It most commonly presents with postmenopausal bleeding or as a prolapsing, polypoid uterine mass. When clinically limited to the uterus, this tumor will be surgically upstaged in 20% to 30% of cases, usually because of its propensity for nodal metastasis. Treatment of choice consists of total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and complete surgical staging. Surgical findings determine further therapy. Retrospective

Sarcomas of the bladder occur rarely in adults. As a result, the natural history of these unusual tumors and the best methods of treatment are uncertain. We reviewed our experience with 13 patients presenting between 1970 and 1980 (5 had leiomyosarcoma, 5 had carcinosarcoma and 3 had rhabdomyosarcoma). Gross hematuria nearly always was the presenting symptom. Patients treated by partial cystectomy fared poorly, while 7 treated by radical cystectomy and supravesical urinary diversion had an excellent prognosis: 6 (86 per cent) have been free of disease for more than 1 year, including 4 who have

Background: Esophageal carcinosarcoma is an uncommon histologic variant of esophageal malignancy, occurring in approximately 0.5% to 2.8% of patients. Esophageal carcinosarcoma usually involves the middle and lower esophagus and consists of both epithelial and mesenchymal components. Case Report: A 54-year-old male presented with painless progressive dysphagia associated with loss of weight for 2 months. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy suggested an ulceroproliferative polypoidal growth in the lower thoracic esophagus. Biopsies from the growth showed leiomyosarcoma with tumor cells immunopositive fo

A neutered female domestic shorthaired cat was presented for a rapidly growing left cervical mass and a 6-month history of primary hyperthyroidism. Cytological examination of the mass was consistent with a sarcoma. Due to poor clinical response the cat was humanely destroyed and a post-mortem examination was performed. This revealed a markedly enlarged, irregularly shaped left thyroid gland with signs of infiltration of the trachea. The contralateral (right) thyroid was also moderately enlarged and irregularly shaped. Histopathological examination of the cervical masses indicated bilateral thy
