Carotid tumors are rare, hyper-vascular structures arising from the chemoreceptors of the carotid body. In this study, we will discuss the classification and diagnosis of carotid body tumors, as well as surgical resection, which is the definitive treatment for these lesions. We will highlight important preoperative considerations to minimize the risk of bleeding, cranial nerve injury, and stroke with surgical resection.

Carotid body paraganglioma is commonly asymptomatic, slow-growing, and nonfunctioning. With its relative contraindication to biopsy due to its high vascularity in nature, imaging characteristics are the key to help making the diagnosis. Treatment modalities, ranging from an observation to definitive treatment with surgery, should be selected on an individual basis.

Carotid body paraganglioma (CBP) is a type neuroendocrine tumour arising from paraganglial chief cells of carotid body. Situated at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, it constitutes 0.5% of all body tumours. Though CBP's is most common paraganglioma of head and neck it is a rare neoplasm and requires a thorough examination for a proper diagnosis and therapeutic management. Here, we present a case of 36 year old female patient with CBP in left side of the neck.

A 46-year-old woman noted a right-sided neck lump one year ago. A CT scan demonstrated a right-sided 2 cm mass located between the external and internal carotid arteries that enhanced with contrast and caused splaying of the carotid bifurcation, suggesting a carotid body tumor (Figure A). Carotid body tumours are a rare class of paraganglionoma arising from the upper neck, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neck lumps. A wrong diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy followed by excision biopsy may have serious consequences. The only way to minimize such risk is to be aware of their existence.

Carotid body tumors are the most common paragangliomas of head and neck. Most of these tumors are benign with a small malignant potential. Although newer non-invasive diagnostic modalities have significantly enhanced the diagnostic capabilities, controversy exists over adequate management of these rare tumors. We present our approach to the management of patients with carotid body tumors, emphasizing the role of magnetic resonance angiography for the identification of these tumors. A case of carotid body tumour (paraganglioma) which is both unusual and highly vascular, arising from the carotid body is reported. The patient was a 68-year-old female with a right submandibular swelling. The initial pathological diagnosis was obtained from the incisional biopsy. Carotid angiography revealed the feeding vessels arising only from the external carotid artery. The tumour was completely removed and no evidence of recurrence could be found 2-years postoperatively.

Carotid body paragangliomas were diagnosed by Doppler ultrasound, carotid artery angiography, and cranial computed tomography in a 35-year-old man with a mass in the neck and hearing loss, and in a 42-year-old man with headache, syncope, and a mass in the neck. INTRODUCTION: The carotid body tumour was first described by von Haller in 1743. The first two, unsuccessfully surgically treated carotid body tumours, were done by Reinger in 1880 (his patient died), and by Maydel in 1886 (his patient developed hemiplegia). Scudder made the first successful surgical removal of the carotid body tumour in 1903. Using data from the Cologne (Germany) Medline Research Centre, surgical treatment of carotid body tumour was not reported in Yugoslav medical literature. The aim of this study is to present 6 surgically treated carotid body tumours.

A retrospective study of 20 patients treated at the Tata Memorial Hospital over a period of 50 years, 1941-1991, is presented. Seventy-five percent (15/20) of the patients presented before their fifth decade with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. The commonest presenting symptom was a painless lump in the neck. Twenty-five percent (5/20) had an incisional biopsy done elsewhere prior to referral to our institute. We performed a subadventitial excision of the tumor in 17 patients, 3 of whom were given postoperative radiation therapy. Three patients underwent complete excision of the carotid system

Between 1973 and 1984, five patients underwent excision of a carotid body tumor without operative mortality, cranial nerve palsy, cerebrovascular accident, or recurrence when followed to the present or to death from unassociated causes.
