The impact of Leiden-educated Niels Stensen (Nicolas Steno) on the advancement of medical knowledge and practices.

Danish polymath Niels Stensen journeyed to the Dutch Republic (1660) to further his medical studies. While staying with Blasius in Amsterdam … joining the Accademia del Cimento. His interests expanded from anatomy to geology; he converted to Catholicism (1667), was ordained as a priest (1675) and became bishop. His ecclesiastical duties took him to Germany, where he lived a life of asceticism, dying in 1686. His remains were moved to Florence and buried in the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Stensen's jou …

Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hohenheim: Theological Reformer, Philosopher and Physician.

Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hohenheim (1493-1541), known as Paracelsus, was a German-Swiss Renaissance man. His interests included alchemy and medicine. During the early 1500s, he worked as a physician, introducing mineral-based therapies to treat ailments. He is credited with developing the first recipe for laudanum, a powerful opium-based pain medication. He had radical beliefs, claiming that supreme knowledge could be reached by observing nature, not by reading books. He expressed rebellious opinions on religious topics and, though devoted Christian, criticized the Catholic Church, preaching

Can Religious and Spiritual Struggle Enhance Well-Being? Exploring the Mediating Effects of Internal Dialogues.

Although a number of studies have demonstrated links between religious/spiritual struggle and well-being, only a few have examined what makes religious/spiritual struggle increase or decrease well-being. The present paper aims to examine different forms of internal dialogues (IDs) as potential mediators of the relationship between religious/spiritual struggle and well-being among Roman Catholics. There were 143 respondents (81 female) who participated in the study. We applied the Religious and Spiritual Struggle Scale, the Internal Dialogical Activity Scale, and the Psychological Well-Being Sc

[Sexual Abuse of Children by Catholic Priests since 2009: Course and Relative Frequency Compared to the Male General Population].

OBJECTIVE: This paper explores the frequency of sexual abuse allegations against Catholic priests and deacons in the years 2009 to 2015 in relation to the male general population in Germany. METHOD: An annual rate of sexual abuse accusations is calculated from the sexual abuse allegations against Catholic priests identified in the MHG-study for the years 2009 to 2015. This is compared to figures of the male general population from the police crime statistics. RESULTS: The number of suspected men in the general population ranged from 17.6 - 20.0/100.000 between 2009 and 2015. For Catholic pri

Techniques of Neutralization and Persistent Sexual Abuse by Clergy: A Content Analysis of Priest Personnel Files From the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

The sexual abuse problem in the Catholic Church has received considerable attention by the media in recent years and growing attention from empirical researchers. Despite this growth, there is a lack of theoretical research that uses neutralization techniques to examine clergy offending. Using Sykes and Matza's theory, this study examines the techniques of neutralization used by accused priests in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Priests' personnel files, which were made publicly available by the Archbishop of Milwaukee in July 2013, were analyzed retrospectively through a qualitative content ana

Our Father who art in prison: Conviction and rehabilitation for Australian Catholic clergy who are child sexual offenders.

In light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, this article analyses the custodial sentences of 143 Australian Catholic clergy. The majority of these sentences were for convictions for indecent assault for which the median sentence was two years' imprisonment. It is doubtful whether the Australian community would consider such sentences as adequate, particularly where offences were against children. Current Australian legislation allows for ongoing long-term sanctions, including judicial orders for chemical castration, to be imposed on convicted sex offenders, especial

Prevalence and experiences of Wisconsin women turned away from Catholic settings without receiving reproductive care.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate prevalence of being turned away from a Catholic healthcare setting without receiving desired reproductive care among Wisconsin women and to document firsthand accounts of these experiences. STUDY DESIGN: Between October 2019 and April 2020, we fielded a two-stage survey to Wisconsin women aged 18-45, oversampling rural census tracts and rural counties served by Catholic sole community hospitals. We present prevalence of ever being turned away from a Catholic hospital or clinic without receiving desired contraceptive or fertility care and document accounts of referrals,

Child Sexual Abuse by Members of the Catholic Church in Italy and France: A Literature Review of the Last Two Decades.

This article aims to provide an overview of the most recent research on child sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church that occurred in Italy and France. The studies reported here have been selected as representative of major trends in the field. In particular, they illustrate the paths taken by current scholarship addressing child sexual abuse that has occurred in mono-confessional Catholic culture areas not yet affected by large-scale scandals. The assessment of the last two decades of literature shows that existing research attests the presence of regional patterns regarding the incid

Pastoral images: the Good Samaritan and the Unjust Judge.

Noting the continuing popularity among pastoral theologians of the Good Samaritan as an image of the pastoral caregiver, the author argues that the parable is not really about the obligation of the pastor to offer care but about accepting help from one toward whom one has deeply-engrained prejudicial attitudes and/or hostility. Thus, if the parable is used for insight into the role of function of the pastor, the negative models of the Priest and the Levite are instructive; but if one is looking for a positive pastoral image from among the parables of Jesus, one might consider the image of the

Questionable 'Good Faith' Reporting: A Study of Web-Based Abuse Reporting in the Canadian Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church provides a fruitful contextual basis for assessing good faith reporting of child sexual abuse. Drawing on the literature of organizational decoupling and organizational misconduct reporting, content analysis of recently implemented web-based reporting mechanisms and safeguarding policies of 30 Catholic dioceses across Canada was used to study misconduct and abuse reporting practices in this institution. Our findings provide evidence of gaps and inconsistencies with regard to accessibility and visibility in reporting mechanisms and corresponding communications on dioce

Analysis of the Written Policies of the 32 U.S. Archdioceses on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.

The Catholic Church in the U.S. has been under concerted public pressure to improve its child protection policies. However, development of these policies has largely been left to the discretion of local dioceses with little central oversight. To determine the scope of current abuse prevention policies, we analyzed all 32 U.S. archdioceses' policies and practices for developing a safe environment and preventing child sexual abuse. Using a tool developed from a list of unique components selected from the policies of all 32 archdioceses, we compared policies and procedures across archdioceses. On

Vaccination in the 19th century in Italy and the role of the catholic church in public health: a historical overview.

Using the case of the vaccine against smallpox as an example, this article explores how the attitude and the politics of the Vatican State towards vaccination changed between the 18th and 19th century. Despite some notable exceptions, the Catholic Church became progressively involved in supporting vaccination in Italy, exerting its temporal and spiritual authority to develop healthcare policies and to convince a population that still considered the vaccine as potentially harmful. The brief historical overview on vaccine and vaccination shows that during the XIX century the Catholic church and
