An infarction involving the left putamen, caudate nucleus and the anterior limb of the internal capsule, resulted in aphasia with semantic paraphasias, verbal incoherence and verbal memory impairment. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) studies with 133Xe inhalation at 20 days post onset showed, on one hand, a bilateral lowering of cortical blood flow and on the other hand a left frontal-parietal hypoperfusion area. Spontaneous recovery occurred within 2 months. While the mean CBF became normal at 14 months post onset, a relative hypoperfusion area persisted on the anterior left hemispheric cortex. On t…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis on the distribution of blood flow to the caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus, and thalamus.
METHODS: We studied 18 healthy control subjects, 20 patients with a unilateral asymptomatic ICA stenosis, and 15 patients with a recently symptomatic unilateral ICA stenosis. The contribution of the ICAs and the basilar artery to the perfusion of the deep brain structures was assessed by perfusion territory selective arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI. Differences were tested with a two-tailed Fishers' exact test.
RESULTS: …

BACKGROUND: Caudate nucleus atrophy is a well-known neuroimaging feature of Huntington's disease (HD). Some researchers have reported a decrease in the volume of the striatum on magnetic resonance images (MRIs) even in the presymptomatic stage of the disease. Despite the many neuroimaging studies on HD, the optimal method for measuring the caudate nucleus area on MRIs and the most effective cutoff values for diagnosing HD remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: To define suitable imaging sequences and cutoff values for HD, we measured the area of the head of the caudate nucleus (HCN) in 11 pa…

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) are usually located within the supratentorial cortex, often in the temporal lobe and they are frequently associated with intractable complex partial seizures. DNTs in extracortical sites are rare. Thus far, 21 cases of 36 DNT-lesions occurring in these areas have been reported; only 8 out of them had epilepsy. We report a case of a 39-year-old woman who had pharmacoresistant epilepsy associated to a DNT in the caudate nucleus-periventricular area treated by lesionectomy. During a 4-year follow-up period, the patient was seizure free and the tumor …

Twenty-two patients with more than 4 years of follow-up had 34 lesions along the CTG, of which 23 were stable in size and 11 grew. All other intraventricular lesions were stable. Seven-Tesla MRI showed the intimate ass …

Although recent animal and human experiments suggest that tissue implantation can ameliorate parkinsonism, there is controversy about what mechanism underlies recovery. Secretion of dopamine from the graft seems unlikely to be the sole restorative factor. Regenerative sprouting by the host brain may also underlie behavioral recovery. Fetal amnion and term amnion, which were shown to produce and secrete a factor that supports the outgrowth of neurite processes in vitro, were implanted in hemiparkinsonian monkeys. Fetal amnion implants induced sprouting of dopaminergic fibers from the host brain

The course of somatic afferents to caudate nucleus (CN) was investigated. In curaized cats discrete lesions in intralaminar nuclei, n. centralis medialis (NCM) affect evoked response (ER) in CN to radial nerve stimulation. NCM lesions totally abolish these somatic responses, while after subthalamic lesions ER appear only when a high stimulus intensity is used. Lesions in the specific relay nuclei, ventralis posterior lateralis (VPL) have no effect on somatic ER in CN. Barbiturates (10 mg/kg) abolish somatic ER in CN. Stimulation of the ponto-mesencephalic reticular formation (RF) in a region w…

1. One caudate nucleus of the anaesthetized cat was superfused by perfusing the anterior horn of one lateral cerebral ventricle. The perfusates were examined for their content in acetylcholine (ACh), dopamine, homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), at rest and after a variety of stimuli.2. When prostigmine was added to the perfusion fluid, ACh appeared in the effluent; its concentration tended to rise in the course of an experiment. Various afferent stimuli, all of which caused evoked responses recorded from the contra-lateral caudate nucleus, increased the ACh content of the …

Structural grey and white matter changes precede the manifestation of clinical signs of Huntington's disease by many years. Conversion to clinically manifest disease therefore likely reflects not merely atrophy but a more widespread breakdown of brain function. Here, we investigated the structure-function relationship close to and after clinical onset, in important regional brain hubs, particularly caudate nucleus and putamen, which are central to maintaining normal motor behaviour. In two independent cohorts of patients with premanifest Huntington's disease close to onset and very early manif…

Isolated caudate nucleus lesions have only rarely been documented to cause focal extrapyramidal dysfunction. Two cases with possible infarcts in the head of left caudate nucleus presenting with contralateral tremors and blepharospasm with hemifacial spasm are reported. The possible mechanisms for such a presentation are discussed.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) histologically resemble gliomas but behave as stable lesions. These tumors initially were considered to be located exclusively within the supratentorial cortex. The four reported cases demonstrate that DNTs may also arise in the area of the caudate nuclei. Moreover, the peculiar topography of these lesions, which suggests a derivation from the subependymal plate, is in accordance with the putative origin of DNTs from secondary germinal layers.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patients experienced partial seizures (two patients

Systemic administrations of opioids are known to induce "catatonia" or "lead pipe rigidity" in rats. The relevance of the caudate nucleus in inducing rigidity was tested. For this purpose, several opioids (or saline) were injected into the head of the caudate nucleus ("intrastriatal" injection) through an implanted cannula, and the electromyographical activity (EMG) was recorded in the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle (GS). Morphine (7.5-3.0 microgram), injected unilaterally, induced a continuous EMG activity in the ipsilateral GS muscle. This effect could be antagonized by systemic administration …

Treatment with the dopamine precursor L-dopa produced a significant accumulation of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in the caudate nucleus of the rat. In contrast, there was no change in the amount of cyclic AMP in the cerebellum. Accumulation of cyclic AMP in the caudate nucleus after administration of L-dopa was prevented by prior treatment with the decarboxylase inhibitor RO 4-4602. These observations and those in other laboratories support the assumption that dopamine formed from L-dopa selectively activates striatal adenylate cyclase. The in vivo activation of adenylate cyclase…

The caudate nucleus (CN) plays a central role in motor control, cognition, and emotional regulation. Structural alterations of the CN have been associated with various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. While volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the standard for assessing CN morphology, linear morphometry offers a simpler and more accessible alternative that does not require advanced post-processing. Normative data on age- and sex-related variations in CN linear dimensions remain limited.

The caudate nucleus is a part of the striatum, and striatal hyperdopaminergia is considered central to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. How caudate volume is affected in schizophrenia and what role antipsychotics play remains unclear. In early-onset schizophrenia (EOS), where psychosis emerges during a neurodevelopmentally critical phase, the caudate may exhibit a heightened vulnerability to the effects of antipsychotic medications. We hypothesized effects of both antipsychotic medication use and age of onset on caudate in schizophrenia. We included adult patients with EOS (n = 83) and ad…
