OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in white blood cell (WBC) count after cesarean and estimate risk of postoperative infection.
METHODS: We measured complete blood cell counts at admission and on postoperative day 1 for 458 women who had cesareans. Information from charts was abstracted, and definitions of infectious outcomes and fever were applied by three physicians masked to laboratory results. We examined changes in absolute and relative WBC counts by labor status. Likelihood ratios for postoperative infection were calculated for statistically distinct categories of percentage changes.

The use of clozapine is limited by the risk of agranulocytosis. The incidence of agranulocytosis after 1 year was .80 percent in 11,555 patients registered in the Clozaril Patient Management System (CPMS) who received clozapine from February 1990 to April 1991. Heredity influences both clinical mastitis and somatic cell score. Intramammary infection is the major cause of elevated somatic cell score. A nationwide program of genetic evaluation of dairy cattle for somatic cell score is being developed. Proper selection of artificial insemination sires, considering their genetic merit for both milk production and somatic cell score, will reduce the genetic increase in mastitis susceptibility that accompanies selection for high production.

The authors studied the count and identification of inflammatory cells in biopsies of chronic non specific duodenitis. In superficial and atrophic duodenitis there is an increase of lymphocytes in the epithelial layer and a rich population of plasmacells in the lamina propria. In interstitial duodenitis the intraepithelial lymphocytes are increased; in the lamina propria there is a zonal cellular increase constituted by lymphocytes.

We used specular microscopy to study the corneal endothelium of eight aphakic patients who had undergone epikeratophakia. The average post-operative period was 16 months with a range of 12 to 18 months. Corneal thickness increased from 0.52 mm +/- 0.01 mm to 0.88 mm +/- 0.04 mm with the addition of the onlay graft.
