The present paper reports a study on the in vivo diagnosis and egg excretion rhythm of the pinworm Passalurus ambiguus in domesticated rabbits. Three copromicroscopic techniques were compared: the cellophane tape test, the McMaster technique, and the FLOTAC technique. In this study, the carriage of intestinal parasites was investigated in a total of 73 children (35 girls, 38 boys) in the 1-6 age-group in two special day nurseries in the city of Rize. Stool samples and cellophane tape preparations were obtained from children three times a month. Parasite cysts or eggs were found in total of 15.0% of the stool samples or cellophane tape preparations from children. During hemodialysis, cardiopulmonary decompensation may appear in uremic patients, possibly caused by plugging of pulmonary vessels by leukocytes. In 34 patients we noted leukopenia (20% of initial levels) during hemodialysis that in 15 was associated with impaired pulmonary function. When we infused autologous plasma, incubated with dialyzer cellophane, into rabbits and sheep, sudden leukopenia and hypoxia occurred, with doubling of pulmonary-artery pressures and quintupling of pulmonary-lymph effluent. Histologic examination showed severe pulmonary-vessel-leukostasis and interstitial edema.

We report a case of "crinkled cellophane maculopathy" which developed during the first few days following an uneventful trabeculectomy in a high myopic patient with primary open-angle glaucoma. We suggest pathogenic mechanisms that may have induced such premacular lesions, emphasizing the patient's high myopia combined with a postoperative inflammatory reaction.

Between 2002 and 2003 we examined cellophane tapes of 119 children, both symptomatic and apparently asymptomatic. Eggs of Enterobius vermicularis were observed in 13.4% of children. This helminth is the most frequent in Italy, but it is as yet unrecognized, probably due to parasitological laboratories not being consulted, resulting in incomplete epidemiological data. We recall the biological aspects of this nematode and suggest the need for sound diagnosis to ensure proper surveillance of this exclusively human infection.
