Cement disease.

Does "cement disease" exist? The bony environment surrounding a loosened cemented prosthesis is an abnormal pathologic condition which, if left unattended, will progress to a total failure of the joint including an inhibition of function and immobilizing pain. That biomaterial properties of the cement used for fixation also contribute to the pathologic state separates this disease from other modes of loosening. This leads inevitably to the conclusion that "cement disease" does exist. Methyl methacrylate has revolutionized the treatment of severe joint dysfunction. There can be no doubt that im

Study on Cr(VI) Leaching from Cement and Cement Composites.

This paper reports an experimental study on hexavalent chromium leaching from cement samples and cement composites containing silica fume and zeolite additions that were subjected to various leaching agents. The water-soluble Cr(VI) concentrations in cements ranged from 0.2 to 3.2 mg/kg and represented only 1.8% of the total chromium content. The presence of chromium compounds with both chromium oxidation states of III and VI was detected in the cement samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Leaching tests were performed in a Britton-Robinson buffer to simulate natural conditions an

The effect of asbestos-cement, cement and asbestos dusts on the lungs of rats.

Experimental coniosis was induced by intratracheal administration to rats of 25 mg or 50 mg of Portland cement, asbestos-cement, as well as chrysotile and crocidolite asbestos. The rats were sacrificed 90, 165 and 180 days after dust administration. The weight of wet lungs and hydroxyproline content in lungs were determined. Statistically significant lower values of fibrogenic effects indices following cement dust administration, as compared to those indices for the other dusts, were found. On the other hand, no significant differences were found between fibrogenic effects indices for asbestos

Survivorship of the C-Stem in cement-in-cement revision hip arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Cement-in-cement (CiC) is a well-established technique in revision hip arthroplasty. It involves cementing a new femoral stem into an existing intact cement mantle. It is less invasive than the conventional technique of removing well-fixed cement. This study evaluates the clinical and radiological outcomes of the C-Stem in CiC revision hip arthroplasty at the design centre. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using a prospectively maintained database of CiC revision hip arthroplasties performed between July 2015 and 2023. Inclusion criteria included patients undergoi

Sustainable recovery of copper from wastewater via zinc cementation enhanced by natural chalcone-based accelerators.

This study presents an eco-friendly strategy to enhance copper ion recovery from industrial wastewater through zinc cementation, utilizing natural chalcone-derived pyrazolo-quinoxaline compounds as organic accelerators. These bio-based additives notably improve recovery efficiency by promoting dendritic copper deposition, which enhances surface reactivity and mass transfer rates. For the first time, this research combines quantum chemical analysis with a dimensionless model (Sh = 0.81Sc^0.33Re^0.47) to explain the mechanism of chalcone-assisted cementation, proposing a sustainable and mechanis

Robotic-Assisted Fixation and Cementation for Sacral Insufficiency Fractures: A Case Series and Technical Note.

Background: The prevalence of sacral insufficiency fractures resulting from minor trauma has been on the rise in parallel with the globally aging population. For similar injuries typical to the elderly population, such as hip fractures, surgery and early mobilization have been shown to improve postoperative mortality and morbidity rates. As such, there has been a recent increase in the literature in studies advocating for early surgical fixation for sacral insufficiency fractures. However, traditional fluoroscopic techniques are technically demanding and bear an inherent complication risk even

Comparative Study on the Calcium Leaching Resistance of Low-Heat Cement, Moderate-Heat Cement, and Ordinary Portland Cement Pastes.

Hydraulic structures are frequently subjected to soft-water or acidic environments, necessitating serious consideration of the long-term effects of calcium leaching on the durability of concrete structures. Three types of common Portland cement (ordinary Portland cement, moderate-heat cement, and low-heat cement) paste samples widely applied to hydraulic concrete were immersed in a 6 mol/L NH4Cl solution to simulate accelerated calcium leaching behavior. The mass loss, porosity, leaching depth, compressive strength, and Ca/Si ratio of the three types of pastes were measured at different immers

Cement debonding behaviors of the various tibial components of the ATTUNE knee system and its predecessors: Is a cement-in-cement revision an alternative?

BACKGROUND: Aseptic loosening remains one of the most common causes of revision of the tibial component for total knee arthroplasty. A stable bond between implant and cement is essential for appropriate long-term results. The aim of our in vitro study was to investigate the maximum failure load of tibial ATTUNE prosthesis design alternatives compared with a previous design. In addition, cement-in-cement revision was considered as a potential strategy after tibial component debonding. METHODS: The experimental investigations of the maximum failure load of the implant-cement interface were perf

Magnesium Oxychloride Cement: A Low-Carbon Binder as an Alternative to Portland Cement.

Magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC), produced from reactive MgO and MgCl2, has re-emerged as a promising low-carbon binder due to its rapid setting and high early-age strength. Yet its limited resistance to moisture and immersion remains the principal barrier to broader construction deployment. This review synthesizes the MOC evidence base using a structured approach that combines PRISMA-informed study identification and screening with bibliometric mapping to contextualize research evolution and thematic development. The review follows a structured data extraction of mix design, curing conditio
