Glycolipids were isolated from nerve tissues of gadoid fishes including Alaskan pollack and Pacific cod. Encephalitis and polyneuritis occurring after rabies vaccination are believed to be immunologically mediated. We studied antibody responses to neural antigens in 36 patients with major neurologic complications, 25 with minor complications, and 39 with no complications after immunization with a brain-derived, Semple rabies vaccine. Sandhoff disease (SD) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by a mutation in the gene for the β-subunit of β-N-acetylhexosaminidase (Hex), resulting in the inability to catabolize ganglioside GM2 within the lysosomes. Cerebral lipids of patients with GM1-gangliosidoses, infantile, juvenile, and chronic type which are caused by deficiency of beta-galactosidase, were examined and compared to each other.
