OBJECTIVES: Patients treated with the iron chelator deferoxamine are known to be more susceptible to mucormycosis. However, while deferoxamine is an iron chelator from the perspective of the human host, deferoxamine actually serves as a siderophore, delivering free iron to Rhizopus oryzae, the major cause of mucormycosis. Haemochromatotic cardiomyopathy is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with beta thalassaemia major. Once congestive heart failure develops most patients die in a few months. Congestive heart failure was reversed and echocardiographic findings were restored to normal in a 24 year old woman with beta thalassaemia who resumed treatment with chelation therapy (desferrioxamine).

A 31-year-old man presented to an emergency department after ingestion of approximately 40 g of HgO. Soon after ingestion, he developed nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping.
