[A teenager with chest pain].

A 14-year-old boy developed acute chest pain after exertion without trauma. Imaging showed pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium. He was admitted due to tamponade risk. Symptoms resolved spontaneously. This case shows spontaneous pneumopericardium can occur in healthy adolescents, and in the absence of tamponade signs, a conservative 'watchful waiting' approach is appropriate.

Challenging chest pain: salmonella myopericarditis.

Salmonella infections have been associated with cardiovascular complications, including myocarditis and myopericarditis. This presentation of Salmonella myopericarditis highlights key clinical features to aid in diagnosis and the importance of prompt treatment with antibiotics, colchicine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

[Cardiac causes of chest pain].

Because of the life-threatening character and a high prevalence in emergency rooms, cardiac causes are important differential diagnoses of acute chest pain with the need for rapid clarification. In this context the working diagnosis "acute coronary syndrome" (ACS) plays a major role. In a synopsis of the clinical presentation, medical history, electrocardiogram and analysis of cardiac biomarkers, ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina pectoris can be specified as entities of ACS. The treatment of ACS consi…

[Pulmonary causes of chest pain].

Chest pain represents one of the most frequent symptoms of pulmonary diseases, in addition to dyspnea and cough. The broad differential diagnostics include the intensely painful but prognostically benign acute pleurisy as well as potentially life-threatening events, such as acute pulmonary embolism or malignant chest diseases. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is characterized by acute chest pain. Pain associated with a respiratory infection, such as pneumonia rarely poses a difficult diagnostic problem. Painful diseases of the lungs can be differentiated in an initial approach by asking the pa…

Noncardiac chest pain during war.

OBJECTIVES: Noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) has emerged as one of the biggest challenges facing military healthcare providers. The objectives of this study are to determine disease burden and diagnostic breakdown of NCCP, and to identify factors associated with return-to-duty (RTD). METHODS: Data were prospectively collected from the Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center in Germany on 1935 service and nonservice members medically evacuated out of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom for a primary diagnosis of NCCP between 2004 and 2007. Cardiac chest pain in children.

OBJECTIVE: Chest pain (CP) is a common cause of referral to hospital, not always directly related with cardiac diseases (CD). We investigated the causes for cardiac CP in children. METHODS: A hundred and twenty children, admitted consecutively to pediatric cardiology clinic with CP, were evaluated in two groups (5-12 and 13-16 age-group) in a cross-sectional and a retrospective way. Chest X-ray, electrocardiography, and echocardiography were performed. In case of necessity, 24-hour Holter monitoring, exercise stress test, tilt-table test were performed, and hemogram, serum glucose, electrolyt…
