Localized chondrocalcinosis in traumatized joints.

The radiographs and medical records were reviewed of 76 patients who presented with chondrocalcinosis over a period of two years. Two groups of patients could be distinguished. The first group consisted of 58 mostly elderly patients (age 53-89 years [mean 71.8]). In these, chondrocalcinosis was most likely to be caused by an underlying disease such as calcium crystal deposition disease or it was present in association with osteoarthritis. In most cases of this group the findings were bilateral. The second group consisted of 18 patients who were significantly younger (age 15-69 years [mean 43.1…

Achilles tendinitis associated with chondrocalcinosis.

Achilles tendinitis was observed in 3 patients with idiopathic articular chondrocalcinosis. It was associated with linear radiological calcifications which in this condition are not unusual but generally asymptomatic. Crystals presumed to be calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) were found in the 2 cases that were biopsied. In 2 patients the acute inflammation of the tendon subsided after several days, but in the 3rd it lasted 4 1/2 months, and resulted in a cicatricial thickening of the tendon with a progressive disappearence of the calcifications. Therefore, the development of Achilles tend…

Classification of primary articular chondrocalcinosis.

Based on long-term observations the authors submit a categorization of primary (hereditary and solitary) articular chondrocalcinosis into three different sub-populations. Attention is drawn to the fact that the extent of the qualitative disorder of the articular cartilage, obviously conditioned genetically, is linked with the age factor and determines the quantitative differences of pyrophosphate arthropathy in primary chondrocalcinosis. In young age, as a rule in the third decade, severe polyarticular condrocalcinosis (first sub-population) develops which causes relatively soon invalidity, in…

Prevalence of asymptomatic chondrocalcinosis in the pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine trends in incidentally detected age- and gender-associated chondrocalcinosis on pelvic CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients of each gender at the center of each decade of life who underwent a CT scan of the pelvis performed 2009-2013 were identified and selected for a total of 400 pelvic CTs. Images were reviewed independently by two radiologists for the presence or absence of chondrocalcinosis within the pelvis. Patients with hip or low back pain, known CPPD arthropathy or any known predisposing condition, prior hip arthroplasty, or articular fracture were exclu…

[Arthroscopic Synovectomy of the Wrist in Chondrocalcinosis].

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment of chondrocalcinosis (calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease=CPPD disease) of the wrist is hardly ever mentioned in the literature. Since the chronic, recurrent type of this disease resembles rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as well as osteoarthritis, the author has performed arthroscopic synovectomy of the wrist, which achieves excellent results in RA und offers high patient comfort as an atraumatic procedure with low morbidity. This article presents the experience made with arthroscopic synovectomy in CPPD disease of the wrist. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Out …

Ultrasound diagnosis of chondrocalcinosis in the knee.

The radiographic diagnosis of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) deposition disease is usually made by observing calcifications in the articular cartilage of large joints or, in the knee, noting calcification in the menisci. Sonography is useful in evaluating the patellofemoral joint, including the trochlear cartilage, which is often difficult to image adequately on conventional radiographs, as true tangential views of the patellofemoral joint may be difficult to obtain. We describe a case of sonographic detection of cartilage calcification in the trochlea of the knee which was radiographi

A case of Gitelman's syndrome with chondrocalcinosis.

A 45-year-old Japanese woman, treated for Bartter's syndrome for 14 years, presented with complaints of numbness in her extremities and polyarthralgia. She was diagnosed to have Gitelman's syndrome with chondrocalcinosis, which were effectively treated with spironolactone and magnesium supplementation. Gitelman's syndrome is a primary renal tubular disorder characterized by hypomagnesemia and hypocalciuria with normal calcemia. The persistent hypomagnesemia is one of the causes of chondrocalcinosis, and many cases of Bartter's syndrome with hypomagnesemia are associated with chondrocalcinosis …

[Hereditary chondrocalcinosis in a Swiss family].

A Swiss family with hereditary articular chondrocalcinosis is described. Chondrocalcinosis was found on x-rays of five cases in two generations. In four there were recurrent attacks of pseudogout; in all observations the first rheumatic symptoms started early in the fourth decade. There was no history of consanguinity and the mode of inheritance was autosomal dominant, in agreement with most of the other familial pedigrees reported in the literature.

Familial chondrocalcinosis in the Spanish population.

We have found in our clinic a 28.1% prevalence of familial chondrocalcinosis among 149 family members of 32 patients with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease. The clinical and radiological characteristics of these familial chondrocalcinosis patients were similar to those of the Chiloes with familial chondrocalcinosis previously reported. No significant clinical or radiological differences were detected between our sporadic and familial chondrocalcinosis patients. Our findings support the hypothesis that the Chiloes familial chondrocalcinosis was carried to Chile by Spanish immig…

Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia revealed by chondrocalcinosis.

BACKGROUND: Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD-CDD) has been associated to hypercalcemia. Familial hypocalciur … percalcemia was also found in five of seven relatives confirming the diagnosis, of these one showed chondrocalcinosis. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to screen for FHH using fractional urinary excretion of calcium in subjects with CPPD-CDD associated to hypercalcemia, this approach may prevent unnecessary parathyroidectomy.

Spinal changes in idiopathic chondrocalcinosis articularis.

The lumbar-spine radiographs of 67 patients with idiopathic chondrocalcinosis articularis were reviewed for disc calcification and other changes. Calcification was present in 21 (31%) of the patients, seen most frequently at the L 2-3 disc space. The 21 patients as a group were significantly older than the 46 patients without disc calcification, and also had a much higher incidence of chondrocalcinosis in peripheral joints. There was no association with back pain or spinal stiffness. The 21 patients with disc calcification included six patients with a destructive peripheral arthropathy, and th…
