[Choroid plexus tumors in infancy].

Twelve infants with choroid plexus tumors were reviewed retrospectively. Enlarging head circumference, bulging fontanelle, and vomiting were the major symptoms and signs appearing 2 to 5 weeks (mean = 3.7 weeks) before diagnosis. The average age at diagnosis was 7.7 months. Total removal was performed in 11 patients with choroid plexus papilloma, and partial removal was achieved in 1 patient with a choroid plexus carcinoma. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversionary shunt was placed temporarily in 6 infants and permanently in 4. Of the two patients not requiring CSF diversionary shunt, 1 needed …

Choroid plexus metastasis: CT appearance.

Tumors of the choroid plexus are rare, and included among the list of such tumors is metastasis. We report a case of lung carcinoma metastasizing to the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle. This mass was isodense on unenhanced CT and demonstrated moderate to marked enhancement after intravenous contrast medium administration. Follow-up studies over the course of 2 1/2 months showed hemorrhage into the mass and periventricular enhancement. Confirmation of the diagnosis was made by stereotactic biopsy. The differential diagnosis of choroid plexus masses is reviewed.

Choroid plexus papilloma containing bone.

The presence of bone in choroid plexus papillomas is a rare event. The authors report a case of choroid plexus papilloma of the IVth ventricle containing bone in a 18-year-old man, and review two previously reported cases, as well as the mechanisms proposed for the presence of bone and cartilage in neuroepithelial neoplasms.

[Choroid plexus papilloma (author's transl)].

The authors report a new case of choroid plexus papilloma. Hydrocephalus produced by this tumour has special features. Diagnosis is made by CAT scan. Despite surgery and the begnignity of such tumours, prognosis is generally poor. In the reported case two radiological pictures over a 5 year period did not any increasing of the size of the tumour.

Choroid plexus carcinoma. Case report.

Plexus-chorioideus carcinomata or malignant plexus papillomas are very rare; only few cases have been described in the literature. A further observation is added now. In a 13-year-old girl, signs of brain pressure occured two weeks before admission to a hospital. Scintigraphy and vertebral angiography showed a process in the atrium of the right lateral ventricle which was removed by temporo-parietal trephination. The tumour had the size of an apricot and a reddish colouration, it proceeded from the plexus. After-irradiation with 5 000 rad. Six years after the operation, signs of brain pressure

Breakthroughs in choroid plexus and CSF biology from the first European Choroid plexus Scientific Forum (ECSF).

The European Choroid plexus Scientific Forum (ECSF), held in Heidelberg, Germany between the 7th and 9th of November 2023, involved 21 speakers from eight countries. ECSF focused on discussing cutting-edge fundamental and medical research related to the development and functions of the choroid plexus and its implications for health, aging, and disease, including choroid plexus tumors. In addition to new findings in this expanding field, innovative approaches, animal models and 3D in vitro models were showcased to encourage further investigation into choroid plexus and cerebrospinal fluid roles…

A choroid plexus metastasis of a prostatic adenocarcinoma mimicking a choroid plexus carcinoma: A case report.

A multicystic intraventricular tumour of the right ventricular atrium was incidentally diagnosed on follow-up imaging of a 61-year-old man with a history of prostatic adenocarcinoma. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed after a one-year radio-clinical follow-up due to progressive expansion of the lesion size and a rising prostate specific antigen blood-level. Morphological features with papillary pattern on pathological examination were compatible with malignant adenocarcinoma or choroid plexus carcinoma. The immunoprofile was conclusive for an exceptional choroid plexus metastasis (…

Choroid plexus inflammation in bipolar disorder.

Inflammation has emerged as a prominent feature of bipolar disorder (BD) pathophysiology, drawing attention to brain barriers known to regulate immune-brain interactions. While perturbation of the blood-brain barrier has been reported in BD, the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier formed largely by the choroid plexus (ChP) remains underexamined. To address this gap in knowledge, we used a multiplex array to measure cytokine protein abundance in postmortem ChP tissue from individuals with BD and unaffected controls, revealing elevated levels of CCL2 and SPP1, factors associated with monocyt…

Infratentorial choroid plexus tumors in children.

OBJECTIVE: Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are rare pediatric intracranial neoplasms, and mostly occur in the lateral ventricle. CPTs located in the infratentorial location are considered to be rare in the pediatric population. We present a series of eight patients treated in the last decade at our institution focusing on clinical presentations and their outcome after excision. METHODS: We performed an institutional retrospective review of patients who underwent surgical resection of infratentorial CPTs during the period from 2008 to 2017. Patients' charts were reviewed for demographic data, cli…

Late recurrence of choroid plexus carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPC) are rare malignant brain tumours arising from the choroid plexus epithelium. CPC are most common in the paediatric population, particularly those under 2 years of age. Common presentations include headache, diplopia and signs of increased intracranial pressure such as nausea and vomiting. Infants may present with increased head circumference, bulging fontanelles, splayed cranial sutures and/or neurological delay. Diagnosis is made via radiological and histological analysis. MANAGEMENT AND PROGNOSIS: Gross total resection (GTR) is the preferred treat…

The senses of the choroid plexus.

The composition of cerebrospinal and brain interstitial fluids is ensured by barriers between the blood and the brain parenchyma (the blood-brain barrier) and between the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid (the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier). Barrier function results from the combination of tight junctions between cells that impair solute flux via the paracellular pathway, cell membrane transporters that enable selective transcellular solute passage, and intracellular metabolizing enzymes that transform molecules in transit. Collectively, they comprise a chemical surveillance system, essent

Choroid plexus papilloma and Pierpont syndrome.

The authors describe the case of a child who presented with hydrocephalus and phenotypic features characteristic of a multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation syndrome. Dysmorphic facies, medial plantar lipomatosis, and developmental delay were observed in this case and are identical to documented findings of Pierpont syndrome diagnosed in 3 boys. This is the fourth case reported to date and is the first documented case of an oncological process- an intraventricular atypical choroid plexus papilloma tumor-found in association with Pierpont syndrome. Syndromes associated with choroid pl…

Diagnostic imaging of choroid plexus disease.

Disorders of the choroid plexus, a central nervous system structure, are rare, but can pose diagnostic difficulties. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a wide spectrum of lesions that affect the choroid plexus. The areas covered include (1) neoplasms (papilloma, leukaemia, meningioma, lymphoma and metastases); (2) infections (bacterial, fungal and viral); (3) cysts; (4) haemorrhage; (5) congenital abnormalities (Sturge-Weber syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome and vascular malformations); and (6) non-infectious …
