Female genital mutilation. Female circumcision. Who is at risk in the U.S.?

Female genital mutilation/female circumcision (FGM/FC) refers to a group of traditional practices that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for cultural, religious, or other non-therapeutic reasons. These practices are usually performed by a nonmedical practitioner in the home or other nonclinical setting. Complications occurring immediately after the practice as well as those encountered months and years afterward can result in disability or premature death. In 1996 Congress directed the Department of Health and Human S

Female circumcision: a risk factor in postpartum haemorrhage.

A major postpartum haemorrhage occurred in a patient with a previous history of female circumcision. Following assisted vaginal delivery 6 litre blood loss occurred as a result of tears to the vagina and perineum. The tears were sutured, followed by insertion of vaginal packs. Replacement fluid therapy was given. To reduce the incidence of tears and accompanying haemorrhage, it is advisable to perform two episiotomies viz. anterior and midline posterior or mediolateral.

The risk of medical complications after female circumcision.

The medical complications of the practice of circumcision were studied in 290 Somali women between ages of 18-54. Thirty-nine percent of the interviewed women had experienced significant complications after circumcision, most commonly haemorrhage, infection or urinary retention. Thirty-seven of the women reported a late complication of circumcision. Among these complications were dermoid cyst at the site of the amputated clitoris, urinary problems such as pain at micturition, dribbling urine incontinence and poor urinary flow. Forty of the women had experienced problems at the time of menarche

Reconciling female genital circumcision with universal human rights.

One of the most challenging issues in cross-cultural bioethics concerns the long-standing socio-cultural practice of female genital circumcision (FGC), which is prevalent in many African countries and the Middle East as well as in some Asian and Western countries. It is commonly assumed that FGC, in all its versions, constitutes a gross violation of the universal human rights of health, physical integrity, and individual autonomy and hence should be abolished. This article, however, suggests a mediating approach according to which one form of FGC, the removal of the clitoris foreskin, can be m

Abusing female children by circumcision is continued in Egypt.

Female circumcision is a frank picture of female child abuse that is practised widely in many countries especially in Africa. This procedure is considered a fundamental violation of human rights. The procedure is expected to be declining in Egypt in response to the recent medicolegal litigation in 2007. The aim of this study is to record the prevalence of female circumcision in 2010, in the region of Cairo and Giza, seeking to show if there is difference in the practice after the change in the law and banning of the procedure. A formatted questionnaire for 244 female volunteers was conducted.

Modern liberalism, female circumcision, and the rationality of traditions.

Tolerance is at the heart of Western liberalism, permitting mutually exclusive ideas and practices to coexist peacefully with one another, without the proponents of the differing ideas and practices killing one another. Yet, nothing challenges tolerance like the practice of sunna, female circumcision, clitorectomy, or genital mutilation. In this essay, I critique the Western critics of the practices, not in order to defend these practices, but rather to show that Western liberalism itself does not offer transcultural and transtemporal principles, for these principles only cohere within the tra

Female genital cutting (mutilation/circumcision): ethical and legal dimensions.

The practice better described as female genital cutting (FGC) is of long standing in some communities, and has spread to non-traditional countries by immigration. It is of varying degrees of invasiveness, often including clitoridectomy, but all raise health-related concerns, which can be of considerable physical and/or psychological severity, and compromise gynecological and obstetric care. The practice is not based on a requirement of religious observance, although parents usually seek it for their daughters in good faith. It is directed to the social control of women's sexuality, in associat

Defective sexuality and female circumcision: the cause and the possible management.

AIM: To verify the effect of circumcision on female sexuality and to define the need for clitorolabioplasty in these cases. RESULTS: Sexuality was not affected in minorly circumcised cases

Female child circumcision in Ilesha, Nigeria. The present and the future.

In February 1981, the external genitalia of 578 female children were examined at the child welfare clinic, Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesha, Nigeria. Of these children 96.5 per cent were under five years of age, and 66.3 per cent were circumcised. Of the circumcisions, 75.5 per cent had been done in the first month of life. "Traditional" surgeons performed 68.7 per cent of the circumcisions, and private clinic personnel, 21.1 per cent. In 49.6 per cent, circumcision had been done to prevent the head of any future baby from touching the clitoris at parturition, an event believed to result in early

Rethinking the history of female circumcision and clitoridectomy: American medicine and female sexuality in the late nineteenth century.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there was one kind of female orgasm and it was clitoral; there was also only one kind of healthy sexual instinct for a woman and it was for penetrative sex with her husband. When a woman behaved outside of this normality-by masturbating or by not responding to her husband's affections-her sexual instinct was seen as disordered. If healthy women, then, were believed only to be sexual within the marital embrace, what better way to explain these errant behaviors than by blaming the clitoris, an organ seen as key to female sexual instinct?

Male circumcision for HIV prevention: female risk compensatory behaviour in South Africa.

South Africa promotes male circumcision (MC) as an HIV prevention method and implemented a national plan to scale-up MC in the country from 2012 to 2016. Literature has suggested that female risk compensatory behaviours (RCBs) are occurring in countries where these programmes have been implemented. Behaviours such as decreased condom use, concurrent sexual partners and sexual activity during the circumcision wound-healing period have the potential to jeopardise the campaigns' objectives. Literature has shown that directly providing women with MC information results in correct knowledge however
