Long-term follow-up for Shang Ring male circumcision.

BACKGROUND: Shang Ring male circumcision (MC) is a safe surgery with good short-term effects. This retrospective study was performed to investigate the long-term result of patients who had undergone Shang Ring MC. METHODS: A total of 103 patients who underwent the surgery were recruited in the study. Before and after the surgery, a questionnaire inquiring sexual function and sexual satisfaction was filled up. Face-to-face interview was executed. Physical examination of the external genitals was performed and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: The median follow-up duration was 19.1 months

Adult circumcision and male sexual health: a retrospective analysis.

We aimed to evaluate possible associations of circumcision with several sexual dysfunctions and to identify predictors for the development of these outcomes post-operatively. Telephone surveys about sexual habits and dysfunctions before and after intervention were conducted post-operatively to patients that underwent circumcision in Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho during 2011. McNemar test was used for a matched-pairs analysis of pre- and post-operative data. Odds ratios, adjusted in a multivariate analysis, explored predictors of de novo sexual dysfunctions after circumcision. Wit

Should male circumcision be advocated for genital cancer prevention?

The recent policy statement by the Cancer Council of Australia on infant circumcision and cancer prevention and the announcement that the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be made available for boys in Australia prompted us to provide an assessment of genital cancer prevention. While HPV vaccination of boys should help reduce anal cancer in homosexual men and cervical cancer in women, it will have little or no impact on penile or prostate cancer. Male circumcision can reduce cervical, penile and possibly prostate cancer. Promotion of both HPV vaccination and male circumcisio

Male circumcision, HIV and sexually transmitted infections: a review.

Three randomized controlled trials in sub-Saharan Africa have shown that circumcision reduces the risk of acquiring HIV infection in men by approximately 60%. In this paper, we review the evidence that male circumcision protects against infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men and their female partners. Data from the clinical trials indicate that circumcision may be protective against genital ulcer disease, Herpes simplex type 2, Trichomonas vaginalis and human papillomavirus infection in men. No evidence exists of a protective effect against Chlamydia trachom

Acceptance of male circumcision among male rural-to-urban migrants in western China.

To describe the acceptability of male circumcision (MC) and explore potential factors associated with MC acceptability among male rural-to-urban migrants in western China, a cross-sectional survey of MC acceptability was conducted with 1,904 subjects in three western provinces with high HIV prevalence (Guangxi, Chongqing, and Xinjiang) in China between June 2009 and November 2009. Through face-to-face interviews, the participants completed a self-administered questionnaire about demographics, MC knowledge, willingness and reasons to accept or refuse MC, sexual behaviors, and other psychosocial

Adult male circumcision with a circular stapler: Is this the new standard?

INTRODUCTION: Circumcision is a simple procedure, but it is not free from complications. New methods have recently been developed, including the circular stapler CircumCYS®. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This a retrospective analysis of our institutional series of 80 consecutive procedures. The stapler consists of a inner bell (in six different sizes), that it is designed to protect the gland, a pistol with a trigger, a circular scalpel and a stapler for the suture. The circumference of the penile shaft is measured at the level of the balano-preputial fold with the provided device. No antibiotic prop

Trends in age at male circumcision and its determinants in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a well-established public health intervention proven to reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Its protective benefit is greatest when performed early, ideally within the first few days after birth or before sexual debut. Over the past decade, Rwanda has made remarkable progress in scaling up circumcision services as part of its comprehensive HIV prevention strategy. Despite these advances, there remains limited evidence on the timing of circumcision and the factors that influence when men choose to undergo the

The Impact of Male Partner Circumcision on Women's Health Outcomes.

Medical male circumcision is a proven method of HIV risk reduction in men with no known direct benefit to women. We investigated the benefit of partner circumcision on women's health. We conducted a secondary analysis of 5,029 women enrolled in the Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic trial across 15 African sites, to look at the impact of partner circumcision status on sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, frequency of sex, and condom use in women. Of 4,982 participants with a baseline response, 31% had circumcised partners. Women with circumcised partners had a signif

[Does circumcision affect male's perception of sexual satisfaction?].

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of circumcision on sexual satisfaction perception in males with stable sexual partners. METHODS: Twenty two heterosexual male adults, sexually active with a stable partner, scheduled for circumcision for medical (MR) or esthetic reasons (ER) at our clinic between June 2005 and June 2006 were included in this study. Men with severe erectile dysfunction (ED) were excluded from the study. These men were surveyed to assess erectile function, penile sensitivity, esthetical penis' appearance, sexual activity and overall satisfaction before the procedure an

Behavioral aspects of male circumcision for the prevention of HIV infection.

Male circumcision (MC) can prevent female-to-male HIV transmission and has the potential to significantly alter HIV epidemics. The ultimate impact of MC on HIV prevention will be determined, in part, by behavioral factors. In order to fully realize the protective benefits of MC, factors related to acceptability and sexual risk must be considered. Research shows that acceptability of MC among uncircumcised men is high, and suggests that free and safe circumcision may be taken up in places with high HIV prevalence. Perceptions of adverse effects of MC may, however, limit uptake. Furthermore, con

Male circumcision does not result in inferior perceived male sexual function - a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The debate on non-medical male circumcision has gaining momentum during the past few years. The objective of this systematic review was to determine if circumcision, medical indication or age at circumcision had an impact on perceived sexual function in males. METHODS: Systematic searches were performed in MEDLINE and Embase. The included studies compared long-term sexual function in circumcised and non-circumcised males, before and after circumcision, or compared different ages at circumcision. The quality of the studies was assessed according to the level of evidence (Grade A-

Male circumcision is not associated with an increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction.

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is one of the most common forms of genetic cardiomyopathy characterized by excessive trabeculation and impaired myocardial compaction during fetal development. Patients with LVNC are at higher risk of developing left/right ventricular failure or both. Although the key regulators for cardiac chamber development are well studied, the role of semaphorin (Sema)/plexin signaling in this process remains poorly understood. In this article, we demonstrate that genetic deletion of Plxnd1, a class-3 Sema receptor in endothelial cells, leads to severe cardiac chamber

Male circumcision for prevention of homosexual acquisition of HIV in men.

BACKGROUND: Previous systematic reviews found inconsistent effects of male circumcision on HIV acquisition in men who have sex with men (MSM). However, a number of new studies have become available in the three years since the last systematic review. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of male circumcision for preventing HIV acquisition by men through sex with men. SEARCH STRATEGY: In June 2010 we electronically searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, EMBASE, AIDS Education Global Information System, ClinicalTrials.gov, and WHO International Clinical Trials Registr

Male circumcision and prevention of HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

Three randomized trials in Africa have shown that adult male circumcision reduces HIV acquisition in men by approximately 60%. It is biologically plausible that circumcision reduces HIV risk in men because the inner mucosa of the foreskin is lightly keratinized and has a high density of dendritic cells and other HIV target cells, making it vulnerable to HIV infection. Also, the foreskin is retracted over the shaft during intercourse, exposing the inner mucosa to vaginal secretions; the prepuce is vulnerable to trauma during coitus, providing a portal for HIV entry. In addition, circumcision re

Determinants and policy implications of male circumcision in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether lack of state Medicaid coverage for infant male circumcision correlates with lower circumcision rates. METHODS: We used data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample on 417 282 male newborns to calculate hospital-level circumcision rates. We used weighted multiple regression to correlate hospital circumcision rates with hospital-level predictors and state Medicaid coverage of circumcision. RESULTS: The mean neonatal male circumcision rate was 55.9%. When we controlled for other factors, hospitals in states in which Medicaid covers routine male circumcisi

Traditional male circumcision in the Eastern Cape--scourge or blessing?

BACKGROUND: Traditional male circumcision is still widely practised in the Xhosa population throughout South Africa. It is a rite of passage from boyhood to manhood. Unfortunately, botched circumcisions are a public health hazard and lead to tragic mutilations and deaths. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The present study was undertaken to assess the extent of circumcision-related complications and fatalities in the Eastern Cape. Health care data were provided by the Eastern Cape Department of Health. Hospital admissions, amputations and deaths per circumcision season were recorded as well as causes of

The effect of male circumcision on sexual satisfaction and function, results from a randomized trial of male circumcision for human immunodeficiency virus prevention, Rakai, Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between adult male circumcision and sexual satisfaction and function in men, as observational studies on the effect of adult male circumcision on sexual satisfaction show conflicting results. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated self-reported sexual satisfaction and function among men enrolled in a randomized trial of male circumcision for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention conducted in Rakai, Uganda. In all, 4456 sexually experienced HIV-negative males aged 15-49 years were enrolled; 2210 were randomized to receive immediate circumcision

Critical evaluation of arguments opposing male circumcision: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate evidence against male circumcision (MC). METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE and Cochrane databases. RESULTS: Database searches retrieved 297 publications for inclusion. Bibliographies of these yielded 101 more. After evaluation we found: Claims that MC carries high risk were contradicted by low frequency of adverse events that were virtually all minor and easily treated with complete resolution. Claims that MC causes psychological harm were contradicted by studies finding no such harm. Claims that MC impairs sexual function and pleasure

Preventive Newborn Male Circumcision: What Is the Child's Best Interest?

Preventive newborn male circumcision has been at the center of scientific debate for many years. The reason for promoting preventive newborn male circumcision, is the reduction of the incidence of UTIs (in the first six months of life), penile cancer, transmission of STDs/HIV infection/AIDS. However preventive interventions in the newborn involving violations of bodily integrity elicit several ethical questions. In this article, we reviewed the literature regarding circumcision, the prevention of UTIs, penile cancer, transmission of STDs/HIV infection/AIDS and complications of this practice in
