Frequencies of Different Types of Cleft Lip, Cleft Lip with Palate and Cleft Palate in Bangladeshi Children.

Cleft lip and cleft palate, also known as orofacial cleft, is a group of conditions that includes Cleft lip (CL), Cleft palate (CP) and both together (CLP). Cleft lip with/or palate are the major human orofacial congenital malformations seen in live birth as well as in still birth. This descriptive cross sectional study was done to determine how the different types of Cleft lip (CL), Cleft lip with palate (CLP) and Cleft palate (CP) are distributed among Bangladeshi Children. This study was performed at a health screening camp for patients with cleft lip with/or palate at Dhaka Shishu Hospital…

Assessment of differentially expressed plasma microRNAs in nonsyndromic cleft palate and nonsyndromic cleft lip with cleft palate.

Plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) have recently emerged as a new class of regulatory molecules that influence many biological functions. However, the expression profile of plasma microRNAs in nonsyndromic cleft palate (NSCP) or nonsyndromic cleft lip with cleft palate (NSCLP) remains poorly investigated. In this study, we used Agilent human miRNA microarray chips to monitor miRNA levels in three NSCP plasma samples (mixed as the CP group), three NSCLP plasma samples (mixed as the CLP group) and three normal plasma samples (mixed as the Control group). Six selected plasma miRNAs were validated in sampl…

Distribution of palatal and other arteries in cleft and non-cleft human palates.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are two possible effects of fusion failure of embryonic facial processes. Aberrant facial morphogenesis suggest aberrant arterial distribution. Prompted by surgical need, studies detailing major branches of the third or pterygopalatine portion of the maxillary artery acquire practical significance. Therefore postomortem arteriographic studies were undertaken to ascertain location of these major arteries and their branches in twelve near-term human fetuses. Comparison was made between arterial distributions in three cleft and nine non-cleft fetal palates. The question…

Feeding interventions for growth and development in infants with cleft lip, cleft palate or cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and cleft palate are common birth defects, affecting about one baby of every 700 born. Feeding these babies is an immediate concern and there is evidence of delay in growth of children with a cleft as compared to those without clefting. In an effort to combat reduced weight for height, a variety of advice and devices are recommended to aid feeding of babies with clefts. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to assess the effects of these feeding interventions in babies with cleft lip and/or palate on growth, development and parental satisfaction. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the…

Evaluation of Pharynx in Isolated Cleft Palate and Pierre-Robin Syndrome With Cleft Palate.

To investigate the difference between the 3-dimensional structure of the cavity in patients with isolated cleft palate and Pierre-Robin syndrome with cleft palate. Retrospective measurements of high need ratio (NR), velopharyngeal gap (VPG), soft palate length (SPL), and long velopharyngeal depth (VPD) were taken from lateral and anteroposterior (AP) cephalometric radiographs of isolated cleft palate and PRS with cleft palate. A total of 29 isolated cleft palate and 18 PRS patients with cleft palate were included. The VPG, SPL, and VPD of cleft palate were higher than those in the PRS group. B…

Bilateral Tessier Craniofacial Cleft Associated to Cleft Palate.

This case report presents the rare association of Tessier number 4 and 5 facial clefts with a palatal cleft in a 4-month-old infant, encountered during a humanitarian mission in Sabou, Burkina Faso. The patient, born with bilateral facial clefts and right anophthalmia, was planned for a 2-step surgical approach. The first surgery addressed the facial clefts, including a modified unilateral cleft lip repair and Z-plasty techniques for the left Tessier number 5 cleft. The second surgery, palatoplasty will be performed in the next mission. Follow-up assessments showed excellent outcomes, includin

[Otological findings in adults with isolated cleft palate or cleft lip, jaw, and palate].

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate often develop middle ear ventilation disorders due to chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. This may lead to hearing loss. The insertion of ventilation tubes is a widely accepted measure to avoid sequelae of middle ear ventilation disorders and hearing loss. On the other hand, long-term therapy with ventilation tubes may inflict iatrogenic complications. The objective of the study was the evaluation of otoscopic and audiometric long-term findings in adult cleft patients who had been treated with ventilation tubes since childhood when chronic otitis media w…

Asymmetry of the craniofacial skeleton in the parents of children with a cleft lip, with or without a cleft palate, or an isolated cleft palate.

The objective of this study was to evaluate asymmetry of the parental craniofacial skeleton of subjects with a cleft lip, with or without cleft palate [CL(P)], and isolated cleft palate (CP). The postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms of 52 parents of children with CL(P) and 40 parents of children with CP from a sample of 196 children with non-syndromic clefts in the west of Scotland were analysed. A conventional cephalometric asymmetry analysis was used to evaluate size-related right:left asymmetry comprising eight linear distances, nine angular, and three facial area measurements. Right:left rat…

Fetal Cleft Lip and Palate.

Fetal cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common craniofacial anomalies, affecting approximately 1 in 1,000 live births worldwide. Cleft lip/cleft palate is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors and requires prompt diagnosis and lifelong multidisciplinary care for adequate treatment of anatomic and psychosocial challenges that extend well beyond surgical procedures in infancy. Cleft lip/cleft palate is a complex anomaly present from the first trimester onward that has prenatal and postnatal considerations. Diagnosis of cleft lip/cleft palate is most common in t…

Cleft Palate in Apert Syndrome.

Apert syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by craniosynostosis, midface retrusion, and limb anomalies. Cleft palate occurs in a subset of Apert syndrome patients. Although the genetic causes underlying Apert syndrome have been identified, the downstream signaling pathways and cellular mechanisms responsible for cleft palate are still elusive. To find clues for the pathogenic mechanisms of palatal defects in Apert syndrome, we review the clinical characteristics of the palate in cases of Apert syndrome, the palatal phenotypes in mouse models, and the potential signaling mechanisms …
