Effects of coexisting disorders on cognition and behavior in children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the presence of coexisting disorders affects memory, visual-motor skills, and daily functioning in children with ADHD. METHOD: Eighty-four boys and 18 girls (8 to 16 years old) participate in this study. Twenty children meet criteria for ADHD alone, 42 children for ADHD plus one other disorder, and 40 children for ADHD plus at least two other disorders (reading disability, developmental coordination disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety, and depression). Children are assessed on memory and visual-motor skills. Parents complete measu

Randomised controlled cognition trials in remitted patients with mood disorders published between 2015 and 2021: A systematic review by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Targeting Cognition Task Force.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments are an emerging treatment target in mood disorders, but currently there are no evidence-based pro-cognitive treatments indicated for patients in remission. With this systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs), the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Targeting Cognition Task force provides an update of the most promising treatments and methodological recommendations. METHODS: The review included RCTs of candidate pro-cognitive interventions in fully or partially remitted patients with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder.

Vascular Cognitive Disorder.

The term vascular cognitive disorder (VCD) refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders in which the primary feature is cognitive impairment attributable to cerebrovascular disease (CVD). This includes not only vascular dementia (VaD) but also cognitive impairment of insufficient severity to meet diagnostic criteria for dementia. VCD is recognized as the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease (AD), but prevalence rates vary widely according to the diagnostic criteria employed. There have been recent attempts to standardize diagnostic criteria. VCD incorporates a range o

[Neurosyphilis and cognitive disorders].

We report the case of a 75 year old man, admitted for a delirium which was unusual by its severity and duration. Underlying disorders were an infectious disease (neurosyphilis) and prodromal Alzheimer's disease. This association was thought to be responsible for the delirium intensity. According to a literature review, we discuss the difficulties of cerebral neurosyphilis diagnosis, its cognitive and behavioural symptoms. We also discuss the cumulative effects of multi morbidities on clinical presentation, underlining a frequent problem in elderly patients in whom multiple causes of cognitive

Sleep and Cognition in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) experience significantly higher rates of sleep disturbances than their typically developing peers. However, little is known about the association between sleep and the cognitive phenotype in these clinical populations. Structural damage affecting cortical and subcortical connectivity occurs as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure in children with FASD, whilst it is believed an abundance of short-range connectivity explains the phenotypic manifestations of childhood ASD. These underlying neural structural

Advancing EEG-based assessment of consciousness and cognition in prolonged disorders of consciousness.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of residual awareness in patients with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDoC) remains a major clinical challenge, as conventional behavioural tools can underestimate covert cognition. This study evaluates whether a structured, multi-phase motor imagery Brain-Computer Interface (MI-BCI) protocol provides objective electroencephalography (EEG)-based indicators of awareness that complement behavioural assessments. METHODS: Forty-four participants (N = 44) completed repeated imagined-movement tasks using wearable EEG (PDoC: Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome (U

From adaptive to maladaptive myelination: White matter dynamics in cognition and neurologic disorders.

Myelin is a fatty substance formed by processes of mature oligodendrocytes, which wrap around neuronal axons. Previously, myelin was believed to be important solely for the rapid conduction of electrical signals. However, over the past decade, research has revealed that its role goes far beyond this, including providing metabolic support to neurons and exhibiting significant plasticity. Myelin has also been thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, myelin has been implicated in various psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression, an

Hippocampus and basal forebrain degeneration differentially impact cognition in Lewy body spectrum disorders.

Cognitive impairment is a major contributor to the burden in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, both of which make up the Lewy body disease spectrum, with dementia affecting up to 80% of patients over the course of the disease. Macroatrophy and microstructural neurodegenerative alterations are typically assessed separately in MRI, although neuropathologically they represent the same mechanism-the loss of functional tissue. To gain a deeper insight into the differential impact of neurodegeneration in the basal forebrain and hippocampus on cognition, we have developed a combined

Telomere biology and its maintenance in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: Exploring links to cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Contemporary research suggests reduced telomere length in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZ) compared to age-adjusted non-affected individuals. However, the role of telomere maintenance and telomere repair in SZ is poorly understood as well as the involvement of telomere biology in cognitive abnormalities in SZ. METHODS: The study consisted of 758 participants (SZ [n = 357] and healthy controls, HC [n = 401]) collected as part of the Norwegian TOP study. Participants were assessed with standardized neuropsychological tests measuring five cognitive domains. Leucocyte telomere len

From vision to cognition: potential contributions of cerebral visual impairment to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Vision has a crucial role to play in human development and functioning. It is, therefore, not surprising that vision plays a fundamental role in the development of the child. As a consequence, an alteration in visual function is, therefore, likely to hinder the child's development. Although ocular disorders are well known, diagnosed and taken into account, cerebral visual impairments (CVI) resulting from post-chiasmatic damage are largely underdiagnosed. However, among the disorders resulting from an episode of perinatal asphyxia and/or associated with prematurity, or neonatal hypoglycaemia, C

The conceptualization and assessment of social cognition in personality and common mental disorders.

Social Cognition is a crucial transdiagnostic construct with clinical and functional relevance across a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Most research has focused on schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders and has informed frameworks for assessing social cognition in schizophrenia. The current review focuses on the more recent developments pertaining to personality and common mental disorders (PCMDs). Two main questions are addressed: 1. What are the important domains and patterns of social cognition impairments among the personality and common mental disorders? 2. What are the trends

Roles for osteocalcin in brain signalling: implications in cognition- and motor-related disorders.

It is now generally accepted that the extra-skeleton functionalities of bone are multifaceted. Its endocrine functions came first to light when it was realized that osteoblasts, the bone forming cells, maintain energy homeostasis by improving glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity and energy expenditure through osteocalcin, a multipurpose osteokine secreted by osteoblasts. Recently, the emerging knowledge on the functional aspects of this osteokine expanded to properties including adult and maternal regulation of cognitive functions. Therapeutic potential of this osteokine has also been recen

Phenotypic plasticity and the perception-action-cognition-environment paradigm in neurodevelopmental genetic disorders.

Careful study of the phenotype can have implications at several levels, namely clinical diagnosis, pathophysiological reasoning, management planning, and outcome measurement. Behavioural phenotypes involve cognition, communication, social skills, and motor control. They can be documented in a host of neurodevelopmental conditions and approached with the recently refined perception-action-cognition-environment (PACE) paradigm, which focuses on the neurodevelopmental processes that underlie learning and adaption to the environment through perception, action, and cognitive processing. Although th

Correlation between cognition and symptomatic severity in patients with late-life somatoform disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Various aging associated factors, such as functional decline, psychosocial problems, and cognitive dysfunction, are risk factors for somatoform disorders (SDs) in the elderly. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how cognition is correlated with the severity of late-life SDs from a neuropsychological viewpoint. METHODS: Fifty-three patients over 60 years of age who had been diagnosed as having SDs were examined in this study. The severity of the somatic symptoms was assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scales (HAMA). Cognitive functions were assessed using the Mini-M

Pharmacological approaches in bipolar disorders and the impact on cognition: a critical overview.

OBJECTIVE: Historically, pharmacological treatments for bipolar disorders (BD) have been associated with neurocognitive side-effects. We reviewed studies which assessed the impact of several psychopharmacological drugs on the neurocognitive function of BD patients. METHOD: The PubMed database was searched for studies published between January 1980 and February 2011, using the following terms: bipolar, bipolar disorder, mania, manic episode, or bipolar depression, cross-referenced with cognitive, neurocognitive, or neuropsychological, cross-referenced with treatment. RESULTS: Despite methodol

The cerebro-cerebellar system: Integrative roles in motor control, cognition, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The cerebro-cerebellar system, a network of bidirectional loops between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex, is crucial for coordinating motor control, cognition, and emotion. Moving beyond its traditional role in motor coordination, contemporary research underscores the cerebellum's significant involvement in higher-order functions, including executive control, language, and social cognition. This review synthesizes current anatomical, functional, and clinical evidence to delineate the cerebellum's role in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum

Delineating the Effects of Alcohol Use on Cognition in Individuals With Neurocognitive Disorders.

Objective: Excessive alcohol use is a recognized modifiable risk factor for the development of dementia; however, the neuropsychological profile of cognitive impairment seen with alcohol use is heterogeneous. We studied cognitive characteristics associated with alcohol use in a "real-world" memory clinic cohort of patients with neurocognitive disorders. Methods: We used the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance memory clinic research database to generate an age, sex, and education matched sample of individuals with alcohol-related cognitive impairment (ARCI group; n=51) and twice as many individu

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and midlife maternal cognition in a prospective cohort study.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disorders, with recent evidence linking pre-eclampsia with vascular dementia. We examined associations of HDP with cognitive performance measured in midlife, in a prospective cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Six cognitive function domains were measured 20 years after pregnancy at a mean age of 51 years. The cognition tests were repeated at clinics in the following two years. Cognitive function domains measured were immediate and delayed verbal episodic memory, wor

Emotional cognition subgroups in unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit difficulties with emotional cognition even during remission. There is evidence for aberrant emotional cognition in unaffected relatives of patients with these mood disorders, but studies are conflicting. We aimed to investigate whether emotional cognition in unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with mood disorders is characterised by heterogeneity using a data-driven approach. METHODS: Data from 94 unaffected relatives (33 of MDD patients; 61 of BD patients) and 203 healthy controls were pooled
