In human subjects that exercise strenuously in cold weather, there is evidence that hyperventilation with cold air leads to peripheral airway cooling, desiccation and mucosal injury. Our hypothesis was that hyperventilation with cold air can result in penetration of unconditioned air (air that is not completely warmed and humidified) into the peripheral airways of exercising horses, resulting in peripheral airway mucosal injury. To test this hypothesis, a thermister-tipped catheter was inserted through the midcervical trachea and advanced into a sublobar bronchus in three horses that cantered

Cold injury is a condition that causes reversible and irreversible damage when tissues are exposed to cold. This injury occurs due to various etiologies, and the most commonly observed ones include contact with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used in households, vehicles, and industry. LPG is a type of gas stored in liquid state under high pressure within cylinders. LPG contains a mixture of propane and butane gases. Direct contact of these gases with the tissues has the potential to cause metabolic, toxic, and respiratory damage. In this study, we present the cases of four patients with cold in

PURPOSE: Cold intolerance is defined as pain after exposure to non-painful cold. It is suggested that cold intolerance may be related to dysfunctional thermoregulation in upper extremity nerve injury patients. The purpose of this study was to examine if the re-warming of a rat hind paw is altered in different peripheral nerve injury models and if these patterns are related to severity of cold intolerance.
METHODS: In the spared nerve injury (SNI) and complete sciatic lesion (CSL) model, the re-warming patterns after cold stress exposure were investigated preoperatively and at 3, 6 and 9 weeks

Nonpharmacological treatment strategies for acute musculoskeletal injury revolve around pain reduction and promotion of healing in order to facilitate a return to normal function and activity. Heat and cold therapy modalities are often used to facilitate this outcome despite prevalent confusion about which modality (heat vs cold) to use and when to use it. Most recommendations for the use of heat and cold therapy are based on empirical experience, with limited evidence to support the efficacy of specific modalities. This literature review provides information for practitioners on the use of he

Both extreme heat and cold can be challenging for athletes during training and competition. One role of the team physician is to educate coaches and athletes on the risks of exposure to these conditions and how to best prevent and manage their adverse effects. Heat illness varies in degree from mild to severe, with the most severe forms being potentially fatal. Cold exposure can result in systemic effects and peripheral injury to the extremities.

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of cold nerve injury and to explore its mechanism.
METHODS: Cold nerve injury model was established in rat's sciatic nerve. Consistent and intermittent cooling of 4 degrees C for 2 hours were respectively applied to the sciatic nerves. Nerve samples were taken at different time points: immediately post-cooling and 4 h, 1 d & 3 d post-cooling. The group of aminoguanidine (AG) intervention was also established. Then NO levels in the nerves and blood serum were detected. Induced nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in ganglion was det

INTRODUCTION: One of the most important factors influencing post-transplant success in kidney transplantation is preserving the viability of the organ from removal to transfer into the recipient.
AIM: This study aimed to reduce the energy requirement with thiopental doses administered before organ transplantation, and to increase the organ viability by minimizing the tissue damage during the cold ischemia process.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty female Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups: control group (group C), and thiopental group (group T). In group C, a midline incision was pe

The study aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence proportion of local cold injuries in northern Sweden, and identify associated factors. It was based on prospective data from surveys in 2015 and 2021 sent to a population-based sample in northern Sweden. Multiple binary logistic regression was performed. The study included 5,017 subjects (response rate 44.4%). The prevalence of cold injuries in the hands was 11.4%, feet 12.6%, and face 19.9%, while the incidence proportion was 1.0%, 1.0%, and 0.9%, respectively. Male gender was associated with incident cold injuries in the hands (OR 1.6

Increased participation in outdoor activities and the epidemic of homelessness have caused the incidence of cold injuries in the civilian population to rise dramatically over the last 20 years. Knowledge of the treatment is crucial for emergency physicians in rural and urban areas. Recent developments have significantly advanced the understanding of the pathophysiology of hypothermic and frostbite injuries. Together with improved rewarming techniques and use of radiological assessment of tissue viability, future advancements should allow for a more aggressive and active approach to the managem

PURPOSE: Peripheral nerve injury of the upper extremity frequently causes changes in the thermoregulatory system of the hands and fingers and leads to reports of cold intolerance. In this study, we aimed to measure the influence of median or ulnar nerve injury on cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) during prolonged cooling at low temperatures.
METHODS: We tested 12 patients with a median (n = 6) or ulnar (n = 6) injury 4 to 76 months after nerve repair. The palmar sides of both hands were cooled continuously using a cold plate at 5°C. We measured the skin temperature of the fingers using video

Lesion-remote metabolic changes were examined 1-7 days after neocortical cold injury using tissue ATP, glucose and lactate bioluminescent imaging, pH-dependent fluoroscopy and cerebral protein synthesis (CPS) autoradiography. One day after lesioning an alkaline pH shift (0.35 +/- 0.19 units above contralateral) was noticed in the lesion-remote cortex, the underlying white matter, the striatum, hippocampus and thalamus, which slowly resolved within 7 days and probably reflected the spread of vasogenic edema. Closely associated with the pH shift, elevations in tissue glucose and lactate levels w

This paper describes a Cold Weather Ensemble Decision Aid (CoWEDA) that provides guidance for cold weather injury prevention, mission planning, and clothing selection. CoWEDA incorporates current science from the disciplines of physiology, meteorology, clothing, and computer modeling. The thermal performance of a cold weather ensemble is defined by endurance times, which are the time intervals from initial exposure until the safety limits are reached. These safety limits correspond to conservative temperature thresholds that provide a warning of the approaching onset of frostbite and/or hypoth

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that individual susceptibility to freezing cold injury might be reflected in an attenuated cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) response by comparing the CIVD responses of an elite alpinist with a history of freezing cold injury in the feet (case alpinist) with those of an age- and ability- matched noninjured alpinists control group (controls). According to this hypothesis, the vasomotor responses to a CIVD test of the case alpinist would represent a pathophysiological response when compared with the normal physiological response of a noninjured cohort.

Chronic exposure to cold causes arterial hypertension [cold-induce hypertension (CIH)]. Emerging data have indicated that gut barrier dysfunction is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. In this study, we explored the effect of gut barrier dysfunction on vascular inflammation induced by cold exposure and the therapeutic effect of atorvastatin in a CIH rat model. The CIH was established by cold exposure for 2 weeks. Two groups of Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to moderate cold (4 ± 1°C), whereas the control group was maintained at room temperature (23 ± 1°C) (10 rats/group). The 2 gro

Chilling injury and death are the ultimate consequence of low temperature exposure for chill susceptible insects, and low temperature tolerance is considered one of the most important factors determining insect distribution patterns. The physiological mechanisms that cause chilling injury are unknown, but chronic cold exposure that causes injury is consistently associated with elevated extracellular [K(+)], and cold tolerant insects possess a greater capacity to maintain ion balance at low temperatures. Here, we use the muscle tissue of the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) to examine whet

Ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is a primary concern in liver transplantation, especially when steatosis is present. Acetazolamide (AZ), a specific carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor, has been suggested to protect against hypoxia. Here, we hypothesized that AZ administration could be efficient to protect fatty livers against cold IRI. Obese Zucker rat livers were preserved in Institut Georges Lopez-1 storage solution for 24 hours at 4°C and ex vivo perfused for 2 hours at 37°C. Alternatively, rats were also treated with intravenous injection of AZ (30 mg/kg) before liver recovery. Liver injur
