Condylomata acuminata (venereal warts) is a sexually transmitted disease which has increased markedly in both adults and children during the past 15 years. We describe a study on 38 children from 1 to 11 years of age, with anogenital warts, 25 were girls. The disease was primarily perianal. Sexual abuse was confirmed in one 9-year-old boy. Most responded to monotherapy with podophyllotoxin, imiquimod 5%, or cryotherapy in a 3-month follow-up period.

During the period 1.1.1967 to 31.12.1986, a total of 34 children with condylomata acuminata were treated in the County Hospitals in Copenhagen. Nineteen of these were treated during the last five years of the period. A retrospective study revealed that 12 of the children were under the age of two years when the condylomata appeared. In eight of these, one or both of the parents had condylomata at the time of the child's birth suggesting that infection of the child may have occurred during delivery. A case of invasion of the bladder by condylomata acuminata in a kidney-transplanted patient under immunosuppressive treatment is presented. Conservative treatment with application of podophyllin and transurethral resection was carried out. There were numerous recurrences, but so far it has been possible to control the disease, in contrast to the four cases found in the literature, which have all resulted in total cystectomy.

This study seeks to evaluate two candidate regimens (5-fluorouracil and interferon) as adjuvants to optimally performed laser surgery in the treatment of condylomata acuminata. Skillful laser ablation can remove any volume of human papillomavirus-associated vulvar disease but cannot prevent reactivation of the surrounding latent viral reservoir during postoperative healing. Perianal condyloma acuminatum is a lesion rarely seen in children or babies. We report three new cases of this disease in children less than 3 years of age. There was no evidence of the mechanism of transmission in these cases. All patients underwent radical surgical excision. In one case, surgical treatment was needed on two different occasions due to the extension of the warts. None of the patients showed any recurrence of condyloma over a follow-up period of six years.
