Diseases of the eyelid-conjunctival complex and corneal complications of lid disease.

The vascular anatomy of the eyelids has been studied in more detail with regard to possible applications in eyelid surgery. The recognition of different subtypes of eyelid laxity, eg, floppy eyelid, lax eyelid, and eyelid imbrication syndromes, as underlying causes of conjunctival and corneal irritation will contribute to their successful management. Involvement of eyelid, conjunctiva, or cornea has been reported in association with systemic diseases such as Wegener's granulomatosis, xeroderma pigmentosum, scleromyxedema, sarcoidosis, and abnormalities of mitochondrial DNA. The ocular manifest

Clinical Observation of Allergic Conjunctival Diseases with Portable and Recordable Slit-Lamp Device.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of allergic conjunctival diseases (ACDs) is gradually increasing worldwide. Both ophthalmologists and non-ophthalmologists prescribe eye drops to treat ACDs; however, there are many cases which are treated without sufficient examination and diagnosis of the eyes. We have invented a portable, recordable, and smartphone-attachable slit-lamp device-Smart Eye Camera (SEC). The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic abilities of ACDs between the SEC and the conventional, non-portable slit-lamp microscope. METHODS: This prospective observational study included…

Electron microscopic examination of skin and conjunctival biopsy specimens in neuronal storage diseases.

Skin and conjunctival biopsy specimens from fourteen patients with neuronal storage diseases were investigated using an electron microscope. The diseases were Tay-Sachs disease, ceroid-lipofuscinosis (Jansky-Bielschowsky type), Niemann-Pick disease (type B), highly suspected adrenoleukodystrophy, I-cell disease, mucolipidosis of the beta-galactosidase deficient type, Hurler disease, Hunter disease and Morquio disease. This examination provided valuable diagnostic information on some neuronal storage diseases but not on Morquio disease or highly suspected adrenoleukodystrophy. False negative re

A review of the application of in-vivo confocal microscopy on conjunctival diseases.

Over the past few decades, the expanded applications of in-vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) have greatly enhanced the knowledge of a variety of conjunctival diseases. IVCM allows non-invasively detailed observation of tarsal, palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, from the superficial to the substantia propria at the cellular level. IVCM has been shown as a powerful tool for the assessment of morphological changes in both physiological and pathological conditions. High-resolution images of different cellular phenotypes, together with quantifiable results, open new insights into understanding the mec…

P63 expression in conjunctival proliferative diseases: pterygium and laryngo-onycho-cutaneous (LOC) syndrome.

PURPOSE: Compare expression of p63 in pterygium and laryngo-onycho-cutaneous (LOC) syndrome with normal conjunctiva. METHODS: P63 immunohistochemical detection was carried out in normal, pterygium, and LOC conjunctival tissue. In vitro, growth of normal conjunctival biopsy specimens, pterygium, and LOC in growth tissue was compared. RESULTS: In normal conjunctiva, p63 was poorly expressed in the infranasal quadrant, with 36% of cells stained vs. 55 to 59% in other quadrants (p < 0.05). In pterygium, p63 was overexpressed (59% cells stained) compared to normal supranasal (55%) and normal infr

Conjunctival vessel abnormalities in sickle cell diseases: the influence of age and genotype.

Conjunctival vessels were examined with a slit-lamp and the abnormalities were graded in 77 patients with sickle cell diseases, including 48 with sickle cell anaemia, 17 with sickle cell beta (0)-thalassaemia and 12 with HbS/HbC disease. The study demonstrated the occurrence of similar conjunctival vessel abnormalities for the three sickle cell diseases which are, however, more severe in HbS homozygotes than in the two other genotypes. An increase of the severity of the vascular abnormalities with the increase of patient age was also observed for HbS homozygotes. The data suggest that the conj

Conjunctival microcirculation in ocular and systemic microvascular disease.

The conjunctival microcirculation is an accessible complex network of micro vessels whose quantitative assessment can reveal microvascular haemodynamic properties. Currently, algorithms for the measurement of conjunctival haemodynamics use either manual or semi-automated systems, which may provide insight into overall conjunctival health, as well as in ocular and systemic disease. These algorithms include functional slit-lamp biomicroscopy, laser doppler flowmetry, optical coherence tomography angiography, orthogonal polarized spectral imaging, computer-assisted intravitral microscopy, diffuse

Conjunctival Cytological Alterations in Ocular Behçet Disease.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular surface alterations and tear film functions in patients with ocular Behçet disease (BD). METHODS: This study included 48 eyes of 48 patients with inactive BD and a control group of 33 age- and sex-matched subjects. Schirmer I and tear break-up time (TBUT) tests were used to evaluate the tear film of the subjects. Impression cytology was used to evaluate morphological changes of the conjunctival surface epithelial cells. RESULTS: The mean Schirmer I test result was 11.6 ± 5.9 mm/5 minutes and 16.1 ± 4.6 mm/5 minutes in the Behçet and control groups, respectivel

Conjunctival cicatrizing disease presenting with lacrimal obstruction.

Patients with conjunctival cicatrizing disease may develop lacrimal obstruction. Little is published on lacrimal obstruction as the presenting feature of otherwise asymptomatic cicatrizing conjunctival disease. The records of all patients presenting between 1994 and 2015 with lacrimal obstruction found to have cicatrizing conjunctival disease were reviewed. Demographic details, clinical findings, disease progression and treatment were analyzed. Thirty-five patients (25 female), aged 43-91 years (median 74, mean 71.3 years) had epiphora and a mild conjunctival cicatrizing process. Nine patients

Tarsal-conjunctival disease associated with Wegener's granulomatosis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics of tarsal-conjunctival disease in a cohort of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). DESIGN: Retrospective, case-controlled study. PARTICIPANTS: The medical records of 82 consecutive WG patients who underwent an eye examination between January 1996 and June 2002 at the National Institutes of Health were reviewed. METHODS: Details of the ophthalmic examination, results of medical therapy, and histopathologic analysis results were recorded. Tarsal-conjunctival disease was defined by (1). conjunctival hyperemia and granuloma formation,
