Proposal to Eliminate Urethane-Treated Positive Control Dose Groups in 26-Week Tg.rasH2 Carcinogenicity Studies.

Short-term (26 weeks) Tg.rasH2 mouse carcinogenicity studies have been conducted as an alternative model to the conventional 2-year mouse carcinogenicity studies, using urethane as a positive control material. In these studies, urethane was used at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/dose, administered intraperitoneally on days 1, 3, and 5. Urethane consistently produces lung adenomas and carcinomas and hemangiosarcomas of the spleen, proving validity of the assay. We conducted 3 pilot studies at 3 different sites of Charles River Laboratories using a lower dose of urethane (500 mg/kg/dose), administered on

Distribution of ABO and Rh Blood Groups in Patients With Keratoconus: A Case-Control Study.

UNLABELLED: Association of keratoconus (KC) with genetic predisposition and environmental factors has been well documented. However, no single study has investigated the possible relationship between ABO and Rh blood groups and KC. METHODS: A case-control study was designed in a university hospital enrolling 214 patients with KC in the case group and equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy subjects in the control group. Primary characteristics, ABO blood group, and Rh factors were compared between the two groups. Topographic findings of KC eyes and the severity of the diseases were inves

Surface developmental dyslexia is as prevalent as phonological dyslexia when appropriate control groups are employed.

Previous investigations of the incidence of developmental surface and phonological dyslexia using reading-age-matched control groups have identified many more phonological dyslexics (poor nonword reading relative to irregular-word reading) than surface dyslexics (poor irregular-word reading relative to nonword reading). However, because the measures that have been used to estimate reading age include irregular-word reading ability, they appear inappropriate for assessing the incidence of surface dyslexia. The current study used a novel method for generating control groups whose reading ability

Clonal groups of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated in case-control studies of diarrhoea in Bangladesh.

Recent case-control studies in Bangladesh showed a high prevalence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains (identified by DNA probes for virulence genes) associated with childhood diarrhoea. However, the clonal status of these strains is not known. A total of 94 EPEC isolates from 80 children with diarrhoea and 14 healthy matched controls isolated during 1991-1992 and 1993-1994 was characterised by serogrouping, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence PCR, and by a biochemical fingerprinting method (the phene plate or PhP system). Twelve O serogroups were found wit

Visual and somatosensory event-related brain potentials in autistic children and three different control groups.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) to visual and somatosensory stimuli, generated during an oddball task, were obtained in a group of autistic children and 3 control groups (normal, attention-deficit, and dyslectic children, respectively). The task included the presentation of standard, deviant, and novel stimuli and had a (between-group) passive vs. active (counting) condition. Research questions were whether (a) autistic children differ from other children with respect to the processing of visual and/or somatosensory stimuli, as measured in the amplitude of the N1, mismatch activity, and P3, (b

A practical approach for regulatory acceptance of virtual control groups: vehicle pooling and biological relevance assessment.

The implementation of virtual control groups (VCG) to replace concurrent control groups (CCG) in toxicity studies is challenged by the need for strict covariate matching. This is particularly true in diverse administration vehicles, which severely fragment historical control data (HCD). To overcome this limitation, this study consolidated region-specific HCD from physicochemically similar aqueous vehicles (saline, distilled water, and 0.5% methylcellulose) into a site-specific pool for 13-week rat studies in the Republic of Korea, thus securing a sufficiently powered VCG pool. To rigorously ev

Varroa control strategies of different beekeeper groups and corresponding honey bee colony mortality in Central Europe.

INTRODUCTION: The parasitic mite Varroa destructor remains a major threat to Apis mellifera globally, contributing significantly to high colony losses despite various control interventions. Understanding the range of Varroa control strategies employed by beekeepers is crucial for mitigating these losses and improving honey bee health. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the diverse Varroa destructor control strategies implemented by beekeepers across Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia, and to evaluate their association with winter honey bee colony mortality. Our primar

Regioisomeric Control of Triexplosophoric Groups on a 1,2,4-Triazole Scaffold for an Enhanced Energy-Stability Balance.

Regioisomeric control is presented as a precise strategy to resolve the energy-stability conflict in trifunctionalized 1,2,4-triazole energetic materials. By positioning a stabilizing amino group adjacent to a highly energetic trinitromethyl group, a new molecule, 1-trinitromethyl-3-nitro-5-amino-1,2,4-triazole (TN-ANTA), was designed and synthesized. Compared to its reported isomer, TN-ANTA exhibits a superior combination of high density (1.905 g/cm3 vs 1.878 g/cm3), enhanced thermal stability (Tdec = 128 °C vs 119 °C), and markedly improved impact sensitivity (7 J vs 1 J). Development of a distributed group control strategy for pumping well groups connected by multisource DC microgrids.

Due to the alternating loads on pumping units and the integration of new energy sources, multisource DC microgrid pumping unit well groups experience increased fluctuations in voltage and power as well as superimposed peak and valley values. This work presents a distributed control strategy for pumping unit well groups on a multisource DC microgrid based on the weighted moving average algorithm. A centralized control program is implanted in the RTU of the single-well controller of each pumping unit, and communication with each well is realized via SCADA and multicast communication, resulting i

Poorer outcomes of all low birth weight groups at age 10: Missouri statewide case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In 1989-1991, a population-based cohort of every Missouri birth weighing < 1500 g was identified over a 16-month period. Infants born moderately low birth weight (MLBW, 1500-2499 g) and normal birth weight (NBW, ≥ 2500 g), were matched to < 1500 g infants by delivery date, race, maternal age, and residence. AIMS: To compare outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW, < 1000 g), very low birth weight (VLBW, 1000-1499 g), and MLBW, to NBW infants at age 10. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based cohort and matched case-control study OUTCOME MEASURES: A Child Health and Development Ques

Verification of a false positive in a two-year rat carcinogenicity study using dual control groups.

There is sometimes controversy over whether or not statistically significant responses produced in carcinogenicity studies have biologically significance. Ambiguous results from our previous two-year oral carcinogenicity study on acotiamide hydrochloride hydrate (acotiamide-HH), a prokinetic drug for functional dyspepsia, in rats made it unclear whether the drug may exhibit uterine carcinogenicity. To check this finding, we performed a second long-term carcinogenicity study using two identical control groups to more accurately evaluate uterine carcinogenesis by considering the incidence of spo

Social Anxiety Disorder and Perceived Criticism in Intimate Relationships: Comparisons With Normal and Clinical Control Groups.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have difficulties in their romantic relationships, including decreased satisfaction and intimacy, but the reasons for these difficulties are poorly understood. Because fear of negative evaluation is a cardinal feature of SAD, perceived criticism from a romantic partner may play a central role in socially anxious individuals' relationships. In the present study, we compared levels of perceived, expressed, and observed criticism and reactions to criticism among individuals with SAD and their partners (n = 21), individuals with other anxiety disorder

Diagnosis of food allergies and intolerances in the study of prophylaxis and control groups in infants.

There is no definitive way to distinguish a true atopic IgE-mediated sign or symptom due to food from an intolerance reaction due to irritation, enzyme deficiency or other idiosyncratic cause. The presence of IgE-specific antibody against a food as demonstrated by an immediate wheal and flare skin test reaction or a positive RAST is presumptive evidence of a cause and effect relationship. The younger the patient, the more likely a positive RAST or skin test is to be significantly causally related to the illness. Nevertheless, in almost 100 infants at 4 months of age, five were observed to have

Schistosomiasis Control: Leave No Age Group Behind.

Despite accelerating progress towards schistosomiasis control in sub-Saharan Africa, several age groups have been eclipsed by current treatment and monitoring strategies that mainly focus on school-aged children. As schistosomiasis poses a threat to people of all ages, unfortunate gaps exist in current treatment coverage and associated monitoring efforts, preventing subsequent health benefits to preschool-aged children as well as certain adolescents and adults. Expanding access to younger ages through the forthcoming pediatric praziquantel formulation and improving treatment coverage in older

The NGDO Co-ordination Group for Onchocerciasis Control.

Since the beginning of the donation of Mectizan by Merck & Co., Inc., non-governmental development organizations (NGDO) have been actively involved in the mass distribution of this drug to control onchocerciasis. In 2006, the network of NGDO involved in onchocerciasis control assisted in the treatment of over 62 million people. The current strategy that is used for distribution in Africa, community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI), is very well suited for integration with other health activities. NGDO have been the pioneers in integrating comprehensive eye care, insecticide-treated ne
