Rapid HIV testing increases testing frequency among gay and bisexual men: a controlled before-after study.

UNLABELLED: Background Rapid HIV testing was introduced at 12 clinics in New South Wales (NSW) for routine testing and promoted with social marketing. The effect of the availability of rapid HIV testing on testing frequency among gay and bisexual men (GBM) was evaluated. METHODS: An observational design using patient data from 12 clinics was used. The primary outcome was the mean number of HIV tests in 12 months. The intervention group comprised GBM who had one or more rapid tests from October 2013 to September 2014 and this was compared with two control groups; a concurrent group (no rapid t

[Quality of life of hemodialysis patients before and after erythropoietin therapy. A double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study].

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of rHu-EPO (recombinant human erythropoietin) comprizing 19 haemodialysis patients (rHu-EPO: n = 9, placebo: n = 10) the patients' opinion about the influence of the treatment on the quality of life was investigated. At the commencement of the trial and after eight weeks, a score was registered by means of a structured interview with a range of 0-10 concerning the complaints most frequently expressed by haemodialysis patients. Erythropoietin was effective in the treatment of renal anaemia. In the therapeutic group, the mean haematocrit value increase

Care for capabilities: Implementing the capability approach in rehabilitation of patients with neuromuscular diseases. Study protocol of the controlled before-after ReCap-NMD study.

BACKGROUND: High quality care of patients with neuromuscular diseases requires a personalised approach that focuses on achieving and maintaining a level of functioning that enables them to be in a state of well-being. The capability approach states that well-being should be understood in terms of capabilities, the substantial opportunities that people have to be and do things they have reasons to value. In this Rehabilitation and Capability care for patients with Neuromuscular diseases (ReCap-NMD) study, we want to investigate whether providing care based on the capability approach (capability

Improving discharge care: the potential of a new organisational intervention to improve discharge after hospitalisation for acute stroke, a controlled before-after pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Provision of a discharge care plan and prevention therapies is often suboptimal. Our objective was to design and pilot test an interdisciplinary, organisational intervention to improve discharge care using stroke as the case study using a mixed-methods, controlled before-after observational study design. SETTING: Acute care public hospitals in Queensland, Australia (n=15). The 15 hospitals were ranked against a benchmark based on a composite outcome of three discharge care processes. Clinicians from a 'top-ranked' hospital participated in a focus group to elicit their success facto

Targeting what matters: a quasi-experimental controlled before-and-after study on targeted double checks in parenteral medication administration.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral medication administration is associated with a substantial risk of medication errors. Independent double-checking by two nurses is widely mandated to reduce this risk; however, evidence is lacking, compliance is inconsistent, and the procedure is time-consuming. Medication safety organizations increasingly recommend targeted double-checking of high-risk medications, yet the impact of such a strategy in clinical practice remains unclear. This study evaluated the effect of implementing targeted double-checking, alongside barcode verification, on compliance with predefined

A Population-Based Cohort Study of Fracture Risk Among 122,255 Adults Before and After Cancer Diagnosis Compared with Matched Controls.

Individuals with cancer have numerous risk factors for fracture. The objective of this study was to compare fracture risk trajectories in individuals with and without cancer before and after cancer diagnosis. We conducted a matched retrospective cohort study using administrative healthcare and cancer registry data for Manitoba, Canada. We identified residents diagnosed with cancer (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) at age >18 years between 1987-2014. Each cancer patient was uniquely matched with up to four non-cancer individuals based on age, sex, length of residency, and area of residence. I
